*Competency Hearing Report (@ 9am ET) – FL – Nubia Barahona (10) (missing Feb. 11, 2011, W. Palm Beach, found Feb. 14, 2011 soaked with chemicals in the back of her father’s truck alongside Interstate 95 in Palm Beach County), (Victor (10) injured; had acid thrown on him; he was released from hospital 3/2/11) – *Jorge L. Barahona (43/now 57) “adopted father” arrested (2/12/11), charged (3/7/11), indicted (3/23/11) & arraigned (4/13/11) with 8 felony counts of aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm, 8 felon/counts of child neglect & attempted murder (Victor) & charged (3/7/11) with 1st degree murder. Plead not guilty (1/7/21). $1M bond. DA will seek DP. Miami-Dade
Trial was set to begin on 4/6/20 reset for 6/15/20 & cancelled due to guilty plea on 9/20/20 & now has new attorneys, plead not guilty on 1/7/21.
Trial was set to begin on 3/16/23 continued with no further dates available.
Judge Andrea Ricker Wolfson. Prosecutor Laura Adams. Defense attorneys, Carmen Vizcaino & Richard Houlihan.

Followed this case for over 14 years. Longer than Nadia was alive. This case is an absolute travesty.

Why does Carmen need a "status" hearing? She pled guilty, and was sentenced to life in prison.

As for Jorge, the State of Florida never wants this to go trial. So, they are just running down the clock until he is gone.

Re Carmen's hearings. That is what the court site had up, so just left it there in my notes. She is supposed to testify against her husband. I guess they are just "checking" her status.

I’d read this thread before but have just read all of it again today. I’m totally stunned that this is allowed to happen. The poor children were so completely failed before this all came to light, I am struggling to believe how they can be failed so badly by the legal system too. Each page I was hoping to read that someone had finally put their foot down and said this trial needs to happen, but no, just more kicking it down the road. I’ve read about the case involving Sarah Boone (also Florida I think) and after her ridiculous time wasting the judge finally did say enough is enough. Why hasn’t that happened here?

With regards the adoptive ‘mother’s’ hearings, could that be because she only gets the deal if she testifies against him, and if that can’t happen (e.g. he dies/is long term incompetent) then the deal would no longer apply and she would continue straight to trial? I’m in the UK and have no idea how it works though!

MOO, is that this mess, would uncover a lot of fraud and negligence. And that is why it has been allowed to languish for so long.

Something is definitely "off" here. For some reason...I have absolutely never seen anything like this. A trial, delayed for over 14 years?! Seriously.

I get so irritated with cases like this where the legal nonsense drags on for years - are they hoping we'll forget?
