Court keeps lid on some Nubia records

Sampedro-Iglesia, who presides over unified family court, had just been appointed to the case Wednesday. Judge Cindy Lederman — who had ordered the release of thousands of pages of foster care records after the 2002 disappearance of 5-year-old Rilya Wilson — was tossed from the case by the administrative judges.

Transparency - FAIL!

Respectfully snipped by me. I want to know why Judge Lederman was removed from this case. I worked with her professionally when I used to live in Miami. She is an awesome judge and really cares about those kids and goes way beyond in trying to help them, IMO.

We all want to know! She was the one who removed the "child reporter" from her mother's custody and really seemed to be miffed at the reporting agents.

BTW not "removed", "tossed" from the case...

IMO tossed is a strong word!

She's not under their thumb, she'll be replaced with someone who is :( :(

Carmen Barahona Arrested In Adopted Daughter’s Death
March 5, 2011 6:55 PM

Sources familiar with the investigation tell CBS4 News that Carmen Barahona is claiming to be a victim of “battered wife syndrome” and that she is not responsible for what happened in her house because she lived in fear of her husband. Carmen has filed for divorce from Jorge Barahona.

CBS4 News spoke to Barahona’s divorce attorney, Richard Joyce, Saturday afternoon and Joyce refused to comment on the case.

A law enforcement source also revealed for the first time the actual cause of Nubia’s death — the autopsy found she died from “blunt force trauma” and that Nubia’s chest was caved in. “It was as if someone had stomped on her,” the source said.

BATTERED WIFE SYNDROME? Really? No, c'mon REALLY? GMAB!!!!

Then why was Nubia so petrified of her "mother" and told that her mother hits her feet with shoes?

Me thinks this defense ain't gonna fly.......................

Not to mention that at the time they were found, Carmen was allegedly separated from Jorge and staying with her mother and some of the kids. Once out she had the ability to call LE.

Not to say she wasn't abused, she very well may have been. But she had the ability to get herself out, and once out she was free to rescue the other kids. And from the reports now out, it looks like if she was abused, she turned around and took it out on the kids.

I hope they get to the bottom of this. What mother would sit by while their child(ren) are being beat to an inch of their life? I don't know if she was abused or not, but the point is, she didn't draw the line with herself, she allowed their child to be battered, which IMHO, is inexcusable. :(

That poor dear child..............ALL the kids actually.

heartbreaking case,

V had also been abused, had broken bones and scars when found in the truck. Poor little Nubia was said to be afraid (terrified) of Carmen, no mention of fearing Jorge - but then again, he was most likely abusing her sexually - possibly the catalyst for Carmen's abuse?

I remember reading that the story of J&C being separated was a lie told to DCF to hinder the search for the children. While CB was at her parents on Monday (or Tuesday?) she was at the family home on Friday evening when the CW showed up.

IDK if CB was a battered spouse or possibly JB was battered by her. I feel nothing they say can be taken at face value because of the mountain of lies we have read from the DCF reports and we have only seen the tip of the iceberg! More so she was an adult who saw plenty of professionals during the course of adopting these 4 children, no way did she fear JB as she said, to the point of letting him abuse the children - she was right there handing out abuse with him. She is disgusting.

Speechless, sullen and looking exhausted, Carmen Barahona made her first court appearance Sunday afternoon in front of a judge to face charges in the death of her adopted 10-year-old daughter, who was found dead on Valentine’s Day along Interstate 95.

Barahona, 60, whose husband, Jorge Barahona, was found passed out with his dead daughter stuffed in a trash bag and her twin brother drenched with toxic chemicals along the highway in West Palm Beach, appeared in front of a judge from jail via closed-circuit television.

Judge Charles Johnson told Barahona at the bond hearing that she was charged with murder along with seven counts of aggravated assault and child abuse and also seven counts of child neglect, The judge set bond for the abuse charges, but not for the murder charge.

No family or private lawyer came to court Sunday and after the brief hearing, which lasted no more than a few minutes, Carmen Barahona returned to jail, where she will later meet with a public defender.

Documents In Barahona Adoption To Be Released
Transcripts Could Reveal Information About Twins' Adoption

POSTED: Monday, March 7, 2011
UPDATED: 12:07 pm EST March 7, 2011

MIAMI -- A judge ruled Monday that documents relating to the adoption of the Barahona twins, one of whom was found slain and the other with chemical burns, will be released.

Attorneys representing Carmen Barahona, the Department of Children and Families and the guardian ad litem group were present in court Monday to argue the release of transcripts from dependency hearings regarding Nubia and Victor Barahona.

The judge agreed to unseal the documents, information which a panel selected to review the case said is vital to its investigation.

Miami-Dade police believe 10-year-old Nubia Barahona was murdered by her adoptive parents the day after a child welfare investigator visited the family’s west Miami-Dade home, according to arrest reports unsealed Monday.

Nubia’s twin brother, Victor, told detectives that he heard his adoptive father, Jorge Barahona, beating his sister to death on Friday, Feb. 11, while Victor remained bound and locked in the bathroom of the house. Barahona’s wife, Carmen, later told Victor that his sister “had been sent away,” the police reports say.

I am just ashamed to be a Floridian right now.:( Has anyone seen links to the actual arrest warrants or the adoption documents that are supposed to be unsealed?
