FBI, BSO Trying to Identify Human Remains Found Buried in Oakland Park

The FBI and the Broward Sheriff's Office are working to identify human remains found buried in Oakland Park.

The remains were found after several days of extensive digging at a site in the 4200 block of North Dixie Highway, Broward Sheriff's Office officials said Thursday.

Officials said they haven't been able to identify the person, and an autopsy is being performed to determine how they might have died.

It sounds like they might have had a reason to believe a body was buried there.

2014-2015 is pretty specific, too. The video mentioned it was part of an investigation across several jurisdictions, including the military? They must have had reliable information from somewhere that there was a body there.

Noting: @ :37-:50 the video shows a CSI agent digging out a clothing item that appears to be a dark-colored shirt or dress. MOO

Joel went missing from Oakland Park in Nov'14. I can't find anything that gives more details than what's on his NamUs profile, which isn't much at all. I wonder if he or anyone he knows had any military connections?

I don't see a canal, even when I zoom in.

"Investigators had been at the spot along a canal since last week, using heavy equipment to dig up a section of embankment."

If I am not mistaken the canal is the body of water to the right of the marker.
That’s the retention pond for the housing complex. Odd that they would refer to it as a canal.

Agreed but that’s the only body of water I can see.

This is not far from where my late in-laws used to live. The whole area is covered by a web of canals draining into the ocean. Retention ponds are often connected to the canals, but this one doesn't appear to be. But it is the only body of water--so possibly the reporter just assumed it was connected to the canal system.
