Circumstances of Discovery
Hunters found the victim's skeletal remains on the west side of the road about 15 yards into the woods in the Ocala National Forest in the vicinity of SR 315, 1.5 miles south of Fort McCoy on September 30, 1967. The finding was reported to police on October 1 and the remains were subsequently recovered.

A medical examiner ruled the woman's cause of death as a homicide due to the presence of a gunshot wound on the skull, although some reports state her death may have been a suicide.

She was initially believed to be of Black and Native American descent until further examination. After the victim's exhumation, lead isotopes recovered from the bones indicated she had likely been born and raised in the Southern United States, consistant with those found in Florida residents.

CASE SYNOPSIS
On Sept. 30, 1967, two hunters discovered the skeletal remains in the woods and subsequently reported their discovery to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office on October. 1, 1967.

The victim was located off an unmarked road approximately 4.25 miles southeast of Fort McCoy, off of Highway 315. Investigators secured the area and searched for visible evidence and with metal detectors. The search revealed some articles of clothing, hair, and most of
the skeletal remains, including the skull. The medical examiner’s office declared the death a homicide due to a bullet hole found on the skull.

Further investigation based on the anthropological analysis reveals that the remains are that of a Hispanic female with some admixed ancestry including African heritage. The female was in the 25-40 year age range, with a height between 5 feet and 5 feet 3 inches tall. Her hair was black and curly with some bleaching that made it reddish in color. Stretching the curls, the hair was about 2.5 inches long. The victim’s upper two front teeth and several lower teeth were missing before she died and would have been apparent to anyone who knew or saw her.

The clothing consisted of:

•A red and green plaid blouse size 10. It is described as the top to a suit that was, “unusually made”.

•A size 32, wide-style bra.

•A black slip with lace on the top and bottom.
Lead (Pb) isotope analysis of bone and tooth samples suggest local, USA origin for birth and early childhood.

The oxygen (O) isotopes suggest a Southern origin, possibly local to a FL birth and place of residence. The strontium (Sr) isotopes are slightly lower in the bone (mandible) compared to known FL samples. However, given the time she lived, it is possible that her diet and drinking water was more local compared to the present day, supermarket diet. In this case, lower Sr can be expected from the local drinking water coming from the Ocala limestone. The data are overall consistent with local FL origin.

I'm not entirely satisfied with this, but I've made a quick reconstruction of this woman. I thought she deserved something more lively.

Such a beautiful pictorial. You always bring such dignity to the missing. Thank you for your kindness. I know her family will be very appreciative once she’s home.

She's now listed as White/Hispanic. I wonder if her case is undergoing genetic genealogy.
