48 year old Paul Thomas Murray, who lives on a boat in Boot Key Harbor in Marathon, told family members he was going to help a friend move a sailboat from Robbie’s Marina on Stock Island to Boot Key Harbor on June 16th. A short time after that, the sailboat he was supposed to help move, called the “Hornet” was located, grounded on some rocks a short distance away from Robbie’s Marina. No one was on board.

I can't find any updates about Paul Murray

Murray’s father told a friend of Murray’s that Murray, the boat’s owner, Donny Vanaria, and a man known as “Red” planned to move the boat together. Red reportedly told Murray’s father he saw the boat aground when he woke up the next day at 4 a.m.

Vanaria later returned on a dingy and asked Red to take care of his dog because he had to leave town.

Since then, no one has heard from Murray, and his phone, credit and debit cards have not been used.

Missing man’s family: Someone has info

Paul Murray is the father of four children: two older girls and two younger boys. He had been living on the 34-foot Irwin Aft Cabin sailboat, Double Feature, moored in Boot Key Harbor since 2014.

Murray boarded a JGT bus from Marathon to Stock Island on June 16, 2016, to meet Donny Vanaria, 31, at Robbie’s Marina to help him sail his 1965 30-foot vessel, the Hornet, a boat that Murray had restored and sold to Vanaria in 2015.

The following morning, the Hornet was listing on its port side just outside of Robbie’s Marina with no one aboard. It had run aground on a jetty. A friend reported that Vanaria brought his dog to him to watch for a few days and left to return to New York in a hurry.

Witnesses confirmed that Murray had been at the marina but could not confirm he was aboard the Hornet.

Vanaria, who reportedly moved back and forth between Brooklyn to the Keys, had been arrested three times, weeks apart, in 2014, starting with a causing bodily harm charge.

Details of Disappearance
Murray was last seen on June 16, 2016. He lived in a boat in Boot Key Harbor in Marathon, Florida. He went to Key West, Florida to help a friend, Donny Vanaria, move his thirty-foot sailboat, the Hornet, from Robbie's Marina on Stock Island to Boot Key Harbor. The Hornet was subsequently found on a jetty near Robbie's Marina; it had run aground.

Murray has not been seen since. Afterwards, Vanaria left town in a hurry and went to New York. Police were unable to locate him for years, but a private investigator hired by Murray's family found the man in 2019 and he has been interviewed and ruled out as a suspect.

Since Murray went missing, there has been no activity on his social media or bank accounts. His case remains unsolved.
