FL - Police Say Mom Had Kids In Filth, Jacksonville Beach

So sad. I just don't understand. :(

I agree that the babies should not have gone to "friends". They should have been taken by Child Protective Services instead. :(

I also get the impression that they were living in the car. :(

In Florida you need to lose the term "protective" loosely!!! (here we call it DCF Dept of children and families)

ETA : Due to their absolutely atrocious history and reputation the name was changed during one of their many many revamps to improve their image... Now if you think about that.... basically the state paid to print our millions of dollars worth of information in the new name DCF rather then spend that money to actually DO something to help children.

That is why I have issue with them being sent to live with a relative!

TxsVicki there is no way her car was that infested with roaches and her house was not. If DCF went to the house .. I can't believe they would have found anything different then the filth they found in her car.

Philamena, I am sorry... But most likely DCF will give these children right back to her. FL DCF has probably the worst track record in the country.

They notoriously give back children who later die or suffer further irreparable abuse.
They will take away ONE abused child but leave other children in the home of the abusive parents.

That is so true. I used to work for the Department of Insurance and saw many cases where people were suing the state over the death of their child because they were called out to the custodial parent's house time after time, SEEING cigarette burns, etc. and doing nothing. The (usually fathers) were trying desperately for custody and not getting it.

No wonder people kidnap their own kids.

i live here in jacksonville and it seems she was not living in the car. the pictures dont really imply it either. look close and you see no clothing. i do see food but i have to wonder how much of it rolled out of a bag after a trip to the market. in all that filth how would you find it??? the mom works at a local hospital..... i hope she was cleaner around sick people than she was here.

I wonder if she were a janitor? That would be interesting. I didn't see any feces on the car stuff and the doll appeared new or clean. I think at the right angles (minus the beer bottles and roaches) it might look like my car!

Well, if she didn't take the time to change the kids' diapers or underwear and just let them poo and pee right in them then I don't think she'd worry about having a change of clothes for them in the car. We didn't see the whole car. Maybe everyone's clothes were in the front/back seat. I'm just going by what the article said about the car and from what is shown in the picture. Or maybe she did have a home and used the car to throw her trash into.

the woman had neighbors and a job as a nurse . http://www.news4jax.com/news/13698803/detail.html
They were soaked and covered in urine and their own feces, and there were cockroaches all over the car. The officer says when he reached in to unbuckle the child, three roaches ran across his hand -- they were just everywhere," said Jacksonville Beach police Sgt. Thomas Bingham.

Investigators said the situation was unhealthy and wouldn't have been discovered if Nava had not been visibly drunk and swerving behind the wheel.

According to officers, Nave hit a median and swerved into another lane. The officers said when they approached the car, they the could smell alcohol on the suspect's breath and that she held onto the car door to get out.

After she was arrested, officers saw the two kids in the back seat.

"You can understand if somebody wants to let themselves deteriorate, but when they do this to their children and make their children suffer, that's unexplainable," Bingham said.

Nava's neighbor told Channel 4 that there must be an explanation for Nava's behavior.

"Being a single mom and all she works. She's a nurse. She's pretty responsible. I'm really surprised," the neighbor said.

another story on this. http://www.fox30online.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=8e47675a-1ddc-47e2-b022-0ec8c1d666fd

When we went to get [the children], roaches came out on officers,” says Sgt. Thomas Bingham.

Then, it gets worse. Human feces can be scene in photos obtained from police. Detectives say it was seeping from the children's diapers, down the seats and onto the doors. They also say the floorboard was stained and soaked with human urine.
Additionally, Nava was determined to be driving the vehicle impaired. Nava's friends say they were in the car weeks ago, and it was clean. Still, the mother now faces two felony counts of child neglect.

There had to be more to this story.
What condition was her home (if she had one) in?
Who took care of the children while she worked?
How long had the kids been sitting in that car?
How long (in days or weeks) would it take for a situation
to become this bad.
Lots of questions.

She was drunk too! Thank god they have got those poor kids now. I wouldn't be surprised if she was a drug addict too. I have been itching since reading about the cockroaches crawling over the kids
