Melissa Schafer pleaded guilty Friday morning and agreed to testify against her ex-husband, former JSO Officer William Baer. (Jacksonville Sheriff's Office/WJXT)

a summary that I put together...

Schafer plead guilty to five counts of murder & aggravated battery Friday morning. She admitted she helped her ex-husband William Baer, a former Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office detective, kill a man in a decades-old cold case. Schafer faces 31 years in prison, and although she has agreed to testify against her ex-husband, she said she was not promised a lesser sentence to do so. Baer's case will move forward unless he offers a plea deal. Schafer's next court date is March 24.

It is too bad she did not do the right thing before they murdered people. It seems like he will be going to prison based on her words. Is there accountability that belongs to the sheriff's office or other agencies? If yes, I hope that all the rot is placed in prison.

He will be going to prison based on her words and DNA. And a well-constructed circumstantial case.

but she'll also be in jail for awhile - from the article I posted above:

^^^^^^This I am happy about. I know there is more evidence that will convict him. But, I am also happy that she is betraying him by testifying against him. They are truly scum who abused the trust given to him by LE. This man's wife must have been so terrorized. And, Mr. Kawaf to die in such a senseless way because this man knew he kept his funds at home is so cruel. He was just trying to make a living.

  • #47
He had no qualms about killing Mr. Kawaf for his money. So, I'm surprised that
Baer's wife is still around to tell the tale. She would have been loose ends that he needed to tie up. It would appear that it was her D.N.A. that started it all off. MOO

A former Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office detective could face the death penalty for his alleged role in a 1999 cold case murder.

The State Attorney's Office obtained a first-degree murder indictment of William Baer from a Duval County Grand Jury Thursday.

Prosecutors told First Coast News that they will seek the death penalty.

Baer is accused of stabbing 39-year-old Saad Kawaf to death during a botched robbery of his Deerwood home. He has pleaded not guilty.

On May 17, 1999, Saad Kawaf said goodbye to his wife before walking out the door to head to work. Law enforcement said Baer and his ex-wife, Melissa Jo Schafer were waiting outside and attacked Kawaf in his driveway.

Saad Kawaf’s wife later told officers she heard a scream and when she opened the door she saw her husband being dragged into the garage while being beaten and stabbed. Mrs. Kawaf says she was then grabbed by a female attacker and dragged back into the home and bound.

In addition to first-degree murder, Baer is charged with kidnapping with a weapon, armed robbery, armed burglary and aggravated battery.
