a police presence in the neighborhood certainly would help. Unfortunately, LE doesn't have enough manpower to post an officer at each stop. But community volunteers who are screened through the school or PTA or Sheriff's Dept. Would certainly be an asset in assuring they make it home safely. Parent's also have to be vigilant in making arrangements for their little ones gettin home safely. It is usually only one or two blocks that elementary students have to walk home once departing the bus. (In my city anyway)
As we know from Somer's case, bad things can happen whether they are walking from the school or the bus. Parents also need to have a 'secret word' with their children. If someone attempts to lure the child, pick up the child etc., the child should ask for the 'secret word' befroe going with them.
I don't blame Somer's mom.....(i've been a single mom myself) it sounds like she had safety precautions in mind for her children. But Somer left the 'herd' and ran off alone. Something which Deina had no control over, sadly. We just need to educate our children and train them of the dangers of this cruel world. But it seems like noone wants to address the issue of the dangers out there. Local PTA's could champion this cause and offer awareness workshops for parents and students, complete with techniques that would draw attention if the student were in a threatening situation.....but that doesn't raise funds for projects, does it? I don't mean to rag on PTA organizations as i was a PTA president myself, but somebody's gotta educate our kids. Not to scare them but to empower them. Ignorance is Bliss? NOT when it concerns our kids.
Education and awareness and a Village mentality are imperative.
