Same here. Steven Hatfill was a scientist named a POI in the anthrax investigation for years. He was never charged. Just had his life ruined by the insinuations. It eventually went away without so much as an apology after Bruce Ivans was found dead by um, suicide when it started happening to him and it was decided it best all around to blame the dead guy.

We as a society are so quick to even convict even before a charge. Shameful.

I think that once he moved to the address on Gano Ave. he kept to himself, and I'll believe that until someone else officially puts them together.

WOW - if you go to News4Jax's website and type child in the search box, you would not believe the number of recent articles they have on there.

I'm looking for the big bust one. Still looking.

I did. I went from case to case here and elsewhere around the country.
What I found was a pattern of prosecuting people who were turned in by others. With loads of time and money being spent to convict a single perp.
Why isn't this a coordinated effort? Surely these guys were often buying from the same websites. I see no arrests and convictions in these cases of the people who ran the websites, and/or who exploited these children personally! The FBI has the means via these investigations and sophisticated internet sweeps to do a lot more to make it hard for these repulsive people. Every few years you hear of busts from places like Germany and Eastern European countries where the arrests are like 500-900 worldwide. But, afterward, no followups to find out if the people were convicted, skipped bail, went to prison, slapped on the wrist or what.

A few years of hard labor before their execution might do a lot to deter the booming industry of child , if they went after about a hundred or so of the main producers and distributors. There doesn't seem a willingness to go after them at all in most of these cases. Will we see much the same in this case? A crack down on JH with no attempts to prosecute the people he "downloaded" from.

We need a War on Child in this country! (Laughs derisively). With much the same results, no doubt. Lots of small time individual busts but rarely a real effort to end the practice because of the profits involved and the people in high places who might get caught up in the net, here in this country and abroad.

Wow the one guy had 80,000 images of child on his computer! I guess most would probably have had hundreds if not thousands too. For as long as JH was said to be a collector it does seem strange he only had 29 pic and videos. That almost has me leaning towards the "he could have been framed" crowd. I can't wait to hear more about this because I agree, with more info come more questions than answers.

Although if he was legitimately in possession of even one, he should go to prison. JMO.
But, if he only bought this stuff, I want the guys who sold it and who filmed/photographed in adjoining cells, too. If there are no pending cases against them I want to know why.

I read he left "discs" along with his computer, but so far I have only read the images were in his computer. I wonder if there were images on the discs.

I know there are laws about images transmitted over instruments of commerce (internet) or owned/contained in a computer, but I don't know if they apply to those images kept on disks. Being child instead of adult , I can imagine he would be charged regardless, if there is any.

I offer the guy the benefit of the doubt, as all accused should be presumed innocent until proven guilty. So far he's charged with the 29 counts, and that's what the prosecutor is confident he can convict him of.

As to his part in Somer's death, we still have to hear what evidence is there to implicate him. There has to be something (besides the 29 charges of ) to tie him to the case, as he's the one and only POI in the case.

According to info in the media, he was living with a female relative and her fiancee. I'm not sure he's ever lived with anyone other than family. I think he's a loner and a parasite! I bet when one's head has been filled with child erotica for at least 8 years, it's hard to relate in a normal kind of way to anyone. Don't you think?

Jarred Harrell Extradition Update

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour on 2-18-2010 signed a rendition warrant for Jarred Harrell. Because the safety of all law enforcement officers involved and the successful extradition of this individual are of upmost importance, our agency will not reveal the exact date and time of the planned extradition. In addition, if members of the media are able to obtain Harrell extradition timeline information from sources other than the CCSO, our agency will not respond to those related inquiries and will neither confirm nor deny the information. Our agency will not divulge what law enforcement officers are part of the Harrell extradition process until after the process is complete.

Once Jarred Harrell is safely transported to our jail facility here in Green Cove Springs, the media will be notified via an emailed release. You will be provided ample notice post-arrival so that coverage arrangements can be made with the Clay County Clerk of Court for whatever court appearances may follow in the Clay County court system. Our agency does not orchestrate “perp walks” of any kind and we have an enclosed sally port area through which defendants enter the jail.

I can't exactly work up a tear or anything near outrage at the idea of a child pornographer having his life 'ruined' by insinuations that he may have murdered a little girl. I make no apologies for that. I'm too engrossed in crying and being enraged over how many defenseless little girls and boys have had their lives ruined by child pornographers, pedophiles, and child killers.

The only time I seem able to veer away from that in recent months is when I'm crying and enraged over the accusations against devastated, grieving parents of these murdered children who aren't even POIs. I worry a lot about them in their grief committing suicide as they watch themselves being cruelly ripped to shreds for no discernible reason on top of trying to deal with the tragedies that have befallen them.

Oh. And occasionally I do ponder hypocrisy.

BeanE, the point of the story was that being named a POI does not presume a person's guilt or innocence. It is not the same as being named a suspect.

Thanks, noway. I was so shocked, I just went and looked that up myself. I misunderstood what hound posted.

As you quote above from that blog, LE interviewed all 161 sex offenders living near Somer, including searching their homes etc, and after completing that, feel they don't have a suspect among that 161 people interviewed.

I mistakenly thought hound meant that LE had never and does not think a sex offender could have killed Somer! Sorry.

Clay County Sheriff's spokeswoman Mary Justino said Friday that investigators have talked to all 161 of the sex offenders residing within a 5-mile radius of 7-year-old Somer Thompson's house.

"Homes have been searched, properties have been searched," she told reporters. "We feel at this time that we do not have any suspects who are members of that group. That part of the procedure has been completed."

It had to do with the use of naming a POI in a case vs. coming right out and naming someone a SUSPECT in a high profile case.
