Sounds like a media hound to me. DT and him have the same taste in my opinion. He's taken over where DT has left off.

THERE'S an interesting thought....

Anyone ever wonder about Somer's white hat & scarf?

I just think it's strange it was part of the original description but we never heard more about it...did they find it? if so where?

From the AMBER ALERT:

SOMER RENEE THOMPSON
Date Missing: 10/19/2009
Missing From: Orange Park,FL County: CLAY
Birth Date: 4/5/2002 Age Disappeared: 7 yrs 6 months
Height: 3' 07" Race: White Hair: Brown
Weight: 065 Sex: Female Eyes: Brown
Narrative: A Florida AMBER Alert has been issued for Somer Thompson. She was last seen in the area of West Gano Avenue and Debarry Avenue in Orange Park. She was last seen wearing a black shirt under a cranberry colored sweat suit with pink stripes running down the arms and legs. She possibly has a red bow in her hair and may have been wearing a white hat and a white scarf.

.....Thoughts anyone??

My thoughts on that:

After following a lot of cases I can tell you that the information that comes out very early often changes. I think the reason for this is the urgency and chaos of the situation.

A lot of media reports have wrong information and a lot of Amber Alerts have incorrect information.

The hat and scarf thing has always confused me a little since it could not have been that cold in Florida in October. IDK

  • #824
Also, in the wording of that part, it said "may have".

Maybe Somer had a white hat and scarf she loved to wear, no matter the weather.

I wonder where they got the information for that part. Was it from family who told them she had a hat and scarf she loved to wear and could have had it with her? Or did it come from eye witnesses that saw her that afternoon with it on?

IDK what to think about that.

Thanks for your input Kimber...

I understand what you are saying - about initial reports being "off" for example, the way they changed the details of the book bag / back pack.

  • #826
You are welcome.

My opinion on the backpack thing was always that little girls often have several.
I know my DD does. I would have to pay close attention as to the one she had on a certain day because they change so often depending on her mood.

The backpack thing never bothered me.

The scarf/hat thing did make me wonder a little. But then, thinking how little girls are, I'm not sure anybody can be SURE if she had the hat/scarf on at the time of the adbuction unless they saw her 1 minute before. Hat's and scarves can be easily put on/taken off and thrown in a bag.

Dang, I'm not sure I ever even noticed the scarf and hat part.

It wasn't very cold in October that I recall. No coats or jackets at the Lynard Skynard concert which was at the end of October.

eta - but it may have been the first cool day of the year & the hat & scarf were with her coat.

Sadly & part of the reason I posed the question is IMO the scarf could have been used as a weapon.

YET they've not mentioned it again, not even to say disregard the original report.

At least they modified the description of the book bag / back pack.

Just something else to make some of us go hmmmmmmmmm :waitasec:

Can anyone pin down the day the scarf and hat quit being mentioned or deleted from the amber alert or articles.

I just wonder if it could have been true that she was wearing those things and they were missing when the body was found. So they deleted them from the reports in hopes the perp kept them.

Maybe all the stuff about the backpack and lunch box was all bs making the perp think the cops didn't know **** and he would hang on to the scarf and hat.

We were having a cold snap during that time in October here in Florida. Kids were all wearing hats/scarves/gloves in the morning on the way to school, but it warmed up enough in the afternoon to where they didn't need them. The cold snap ended soon after Somer went missing if i recall.
It's possible that the hat/scarf could have been left at school (my kids are always doing that) or was in her bookbag.
just wanted to explain why she was likely wearing them that day.. it was pretty cold here for us Floridians!!

  • #833
I'm just not getting the hmmmm moment.

Unless the scarf was the murder weapon and she was strangled with it.

Doc makes a good point that it may have been on Somer or found with Somer and that's why it was no longer talked about.

IDK

  • #834
Would an Amber Alert mention something someone was carrying?

I thought they would just report what the child looked like and was wearing.
IMO that is why you don't see the backpack and lunchbox on the Amber Alert.

  • #835
MPR states:

She (DT) said she (Somer) was also carrying a black book bag.

NOTHING about the scarf & hat in the MPR.

THERE'S an interesting thought....

:waitasec:

Him going on tv the way he did etc and whatever excuses he makes for his step kids etc. I don't buy it one bit. I'm convinced they either knew for a long time or planted this on him. DT as well was all about her as well. I'm shocked she isn't on tv. You would think she would make a statement about how grateful she is that Somer's killer has been caught. I think she knows it's a frame up. He's the perfect fall guy. Where is the evidence of the murder??? If they had it, they would have charged him by now.

My thought are the hat and scarf were found at school...she may have worn them in the morning as it was cooler than usual that particular day & by the afternoon, it had warmed up. She probably forgot to take them upon her departure from school & left them in her little cubby.

Guess I should read the entire thread before I post - sorry amytlake - didn't mean to repeat what you already posted. I just got excited when I read tarabull's post and replied before continuing to read the rest of the posts.

IIRC DT made a statement right after JH was named a person of interest that she didn't want to get her hopes up.
If he is charged, I'm sure she will make that statement thanking LE or a statement about how thankful she is.

I think to make that sort of statement now would be crazy. How can you be thankful the killer was caught BEFORE he is charged?

Of course, I've never heard what kind of hat it was, but if it was cold enough that day to wear a hat and scarf, wouldn't it have fit better with her hair down than it would with her hair up in a ponytail? Also, wearing your hair down is warmer than wearing it in a ponytail. When I think about the white hat and scarf, I think about a knit boggin type of hat and maybe the scarf was attached to the hat. We have never seen a description of the hat and scarf like we have of the book bag, have we?
