Uber driver stood his ground and killed man who threatened to shoot him, sheriff says - CNN

The Uber driver fired once, killing Boek.

After a heated text message exchange with his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Jason Boek followed an Uber he thought was driving her home and swerved in front of it on a dark stretch of road in central Florida early Tuesday morning, authorities say.

"This is a justifiable homicide all day long. You have the right protect yourself," Judd said Wednesday, adding "this was the intent of the law."

"Here's a message for the hotheads of the community: Don't do that stuff," the sheriff said. "Good people carry guns and they will shoot you. A lot. Graveyard dead."

Though Florida's stand your ground law needs modification (Texas equivalent specifically says no provocation, shooter can be in violation o any law himself), I think the man's actions were entirely justified.

In addition, one article reports that immediately after shooting the individual and ending the threat, the shooter called 9-11 and then attempted to save the man's life by controlling the bleeding. This is more evidence of his good character.

I think he might have saved his passenger's life.

Sheriff isn't pulling any punches. bbm

You see how rapidly you have to make a decision if whether you live or die," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. "Don't mess with an Uber driver. Don't mess with people. Respect other people and leave them alone.
"You may roll out of a car thinking you are a bad dude and threaten people with a gun with a cell phone in your hand and end up pushing up daisies."

True, even though the woman he was angry with was still at the bar.
Oh, so he might have saved her life in an indirect sort of way and I clearly need another cup of coffee.

Assuming all is as it seems from watching the video and reading the articles, I think I've finally seen a "stand your ground" case I feel was a reasonable and justified shooting. And doing CPR after shows respect and a compassionate character, I agree. Of course it's terrible someone died, but it was a natural consequence to his actions; one can't reasonably expect to escape that kind of altercation unscathed.

Completely justified. I'm glad the Uber driver had a dashcam.

Took me a bit to get it straight also. The "girlfriend" helped another woman into the Uber. bbm

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, a woman called for an Uber to take her home from the Grove Lounge on U.S. Highway 27 in Dundee because she had been drinking.

Another woman at the lounge walked the patron to her Uber when it arrived, deputies said. The women do not know each other.

Meanwhile, the woman who assisted the Uber passenger began receiving text messages from Boek, her on-again, off-again boyfriend, who thought she got into the Uber, deputies said. Boek told her he was going to pursue the Uber and beat up the driver, according to officials.

Judd said it appears Boek thought his girlfriend, not the other bar patron, get into the car.

No pulling punches for Judd, that's for sure.
Get to know Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd
Sheriff Grady Judd "is known for his no-nonsense justice and memorable quips. "My mamma used to tell me when I was growing up ... 'Son, if you could just get that brain engaged one second before you got your mouth engaged ... you'd be much better off,'" Judd said. "Most of the things I don't regret. I mean I think through it when I have an opportunity ... Otherwise, I just blurt it out and pray.""

I can't stand people like this guy--he threatened to beat up the uber driver?? Why? Is he so insecure and jealous he can't deal with another man literally just doing his job just driving his sometimes girlfriend? Such an immature response and from this guy's record he looks like he had a severe lack of impulse control. It was probably only a matter of time.

Uber driver shoots and kills man who chased after him

Boek apparently mistakenly believed his estranged girlfriend was in the vehicle, Judd said. Boek threatened to assault both the passenger and the driver, according to text messages released by police.

THIS A VERY SAD ENDING for two innocent people! We need to be able to practice self control. The Urber driver and girl-friend were victim of road rage. I feel for their family and friends

All valid points by the Sherriff, and he would have my vote. The humans living in that County, however, like all humans, have widely varying degrees of intelligence, maturity and self-control.

Some may misinterpret the Sheriffs good advice as an exhortation to get “defensive” when they don t need to. SYG laws increase this possibility. In short, the Sherriff has made point and given good advice. I do hope, however, that he does not make any more comments on the subject.
