Bulone told Kosowski he needs to have a lawyer present for his next hearing May 28.

“We’re not going to go on forever like this,” he said. “If you’re not making a good faith effort, then I’ll appoint one for you.”
[...]
Pinellas Assistant State Attorney Nathan Vonderheide said he plans to call 56 state witnesses over six weeks of trial. A new trial date has not been scheduled.

Kosowski said Wednesday he had met with two lawyers in the last week, but did not want to hire either of them.

Vonderheide said Kosowski has logged 229 hours on jail computers, which he argued was ample time to review discovery if Kosowski decides represent himself.

“Dr. Kososwki is a very smart man. He has an MBA and a medical degree from Dartmouth. His writing reflects that. It’s very articulate. It’s better than some lawyers that I’ve litigated against,” Vonderheide said. “I think the next stage of the inquiry is whether he’s ready to represent himself for trial.”

From the linked article:
Later on the day that Cozzi went missing, Kosowski’s red Toyota Corolla was picked up on license plate readers in the Miami area. When Kosowski was arrested in Tarpon Springs a few days later, police found a bloodied ballistic vest, duct tape, a paralyzing agent, syringes with sedatives, brass knuckles, a Taser and nearly $300,000 in cash, records state. Cozzi’s DNA was also found in the Corolla’s trunk.

'Killer' Doctor Represents Himself as Lawyers Withdraw from Case

May 14, 2025
Dr. Tomasz Kosowski represented himself again in court on Wednesday after his lawyers withdrew from his murder case for "ethical reasons." Kosowski told the court that he is still searching for a lawyer and does not want to represent himself at his murder trial. His trial was expected to start next week. He is accused of killing an attorney in 2023.

A Pinellas plastic surgeon who could face the death penalty if convicted of the murder of a Largo attorney will likely wind up with a court-appointed lawyer to defend him at trial.

Bulone asked Kosowski if he wanted to represent himself or appoint a public defender. Kosowski said he does not want to represent himself.

A moment later, Bulone appointed the Pinellas-Pasco Public Defender’s Office to represent Kosowski, who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Steven Cozzi. A representative from that office told Bulone there is likely a conflict that will preclude the office from representing Kosowski but did not elaborate.

If so, Bulone said, Kosowski will likely end up with an attorney selected from a list of defense lawyers who are willing and qualified to take death penalty cases in Florida.

Court-appointed attorneys in death penalty cases in Florida are typically selected from a Capital Collateral Registry maintained by the Justice Administrative Commission. These attorneys must meet specific qualifications and experience requirements outlined by state law and rules of criminal procedure.

Bulone set another status hearing for June 25.

“If we reset this for a couple of weeks, what efforts are you going to make to hire a lawyer?” the judge asked.

“Nothing new, sir,” Kosowski responded.

“You’re not going to do anything in the next two weeks?” the judge said.

“What can I? I mean, it’s my mother that’s doing all the work,” Kosowski responded.

6/16/2025MOTION TO WITHDRAW PRIVATE ATTORNEYMOTION TO WITHDRAW PRIVATE ATTORNEY (1)

June 24, 2025
PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Court records indicate the latest attorney appointed to defend accused murderer Tomasz Kosowski is asking the judge to dismiss her from the case.
If the defense attorney's motion is granted, this would be the fourth legal team to drop representation for Kosowski.
[...]
When Kosowski appeared in court on May 28, the judge appointed a public defender to represent him. That public defender then filed a motion to withdraw from counsel, citing "an ethical conflict...which precludes the further representation of the Defendant," court records state.
The court was informed that the public defender's office as a whole would likely not be able to take on Kosowski's case without conflict, so the judge appointed regional counsel to represent him.
On June 5, the court-appointed regional counsel filed a motion asking the judge to withdraw because the attorney had previously represented someone listed as a witness for the prosecution.
Judge Bulone granted the motion on June 10 and appointed a private attorney to represent Kosowski. This attorney was chosen from a list maintained by the Clerk of Court, containing names of private attorneys who would be willing to step in and represent defendants when no other options exist.
That attorney also filed a motion to withdraw from the case on June 16, stating their caseload is very busy through the rest of the year and that it would be in the "best interest" of Kosowski that he be appointed another attorney on the list that can handle such cases.
A pre-trial hearing scheduled for June 25 would likely address the most recent motion to dismiss, and the judge will have to decide whether to force the private attorney to stay on the case, appoint a different attorney to the case or force Kosowski to represent himself.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — The latest attorney appointed to defend accused murderer Tomasz Kosowski is asking the judge to dismiss her from the case, citing a heavy workload that could hinder his representation.

A hearing was set for June 30 for the judge to rule on the current court-appointed attorney's motion. The judge indicated there is another lawyer on the clerk's list who could be appointed if the motion is granted.
Another pre-trial hearing was scheduled for July 10 and the judge said jury selection could happen as early as July 14.
