Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said they found him in a room on the 18th floor of the Floridan Hotel in downtown Tampa. It was a multi-agency operation. They were all aware that he'd checked into the hotel, and even made multiple calls to the front desk overnight.
Castor said officials used a ruse to get Matos out of the room, away from the 4-year-old boy and into custody- all with safety in mind.
The relationship between Tristan and Matos remained unclear -- some told police they were father and son, and others described Matos as a "father figure" to the boy...
Castor said that investigators who have talked with Tristan report that the boy is unharmed and is cooperating with police.
Matos was arrested on aggravated assault charges stemming from an August 28 incident when he allegedly put a knife up to Tristan's mother.
Matos denied killing anyone. He said he doesn't know who might have committed the killings. He was booked in the Hillsborough County Jail later Friday on a Pasco County warrant for aggravated assault. He was held on $200,000 bail.
Pasco sheriff's deputies said Tristan was in good spirits after being rescued, but confused. He wanted to know where he was going and why he was being moved from place to place, officials said.
Addressing the media Friday, Sheriff Nocco said investigators are trying to determine where the pair have been for the past week and who might have been caring for the boy. "We know somebody in this area was helping him out," Nocco said. "Anybody that has interacted with (Matos) in the last five to six days, we want to talk with them."
Officials said an investigator who specializes in talking to autistic children was interviewing Ismael. They were not sure whether he might have witnesses the killings.
A Florida man who is in custody and suspected of killing four people before disappearing with a 4-year-old autistic boy, believed to be his son, had help while he was on the run...
Nocco said investigators have learned that before Matos was located, he was "drunk at a local bar, passed out in the bathroom," meaning that "somebody at that time was taking care of that little boy."
The search warrant filed in Hillsborough County identified the four people who were missing from the home as Megan Brown, her mother Margaret Brown and her father Greg Brown, along with Nicholas Leonard.
The warrant said Leonard's family identified his body as one of those found in the Hudson field.
“I've known him for probably eight or nine years. He's been kind of a handy man, goes around cuts trees, mends fences,” said Jim Pingel who lived near Leonard at one point in Hudson.
Matos is a person of interest the murders of his ex-girlfriend Megan Brown, her boyfriend Nicholas Leonard, and her parents, Margaret and Gregory Brown...
Nicholas Leonard lived next door to Joan Wojtan. She remembered hearing about his new girlfriend, Megan. "He told me all about her, that she lived with her parents and her ex-husband and the little boy and I said that was very unusual, sort of like a soap opera," she said.
He told her not to worry. "He said things were going really good, he met the ex and they got along fine. He said that guy had no problem with Nick doing things with the little boy. They all seemed very happy, according to Nick," she said.
