GUILTY FL - Wayne Treacy for savage beating of 15yo girl, Deerfield Beach, 17 March 2010

kbl - Your post actually gave me some food for thought. While we wish to protect the victims, in a way you are right, they end up being hidden. So, it may also inadvertently protect the perp. Interesting line of thought.

Why would anyone think Jaycee should be ashamed for releasing a picture? I hadn't heard that. That is patently ridiculous. I don't feel Josie needs to hide, but being that she is a teenager I am just concerned for how she will feel at the pictures being released when she is not at her best. If she is comfortable with it, I think they should be plastered from here to kingdom come. People need to know what was done to her. Again, I'm trying to look at it purely through the eyes of how a teenager would see it. I just don't want her to feel humiliated by it.

I am just going to assume that her mother knows Josie far better than any of us do, and that she knows far more about what her daughter would want and how she would react, and how she will handle this in the future. I certainly can't presume that I can see further into the future and make better decisions about HER child than she can. At this point, she most likely sees things more clearly than we can ever possibly know. She has been forced to acknowledge the fact that the most important thing to consider is that her daughter even HAS a future.

Josie has absolutely nothing to be humiliated about, ever. These pictures show a strong, resilient young woman who will know in her future how to empathize and offer support and strength to others who need that help. Bless her and her mother both for fighting for her life and winning!

I have to say that although we are all really pulling for Josie and wanting to know how she is doing, I think they need to stop showing videos of her in the hospital. I know that if it was me, I wouldn't want that in the news. It is a horrible invasion of her privacy and I question the necessity of having live video of her suffering and crying.

I totally understand your point. What teenage girl wants the world to see her in that state? But I don't think she is worried about that right now, later she may be mortified, but at the moment I think she has bigger fish to fry.

I think her mom, and their lawyer are simply doing what they can to keep this story in the media eye to ensure this case does not get lost in shuffle and forgotten like so many do.

They probably feel that there is a much better chance of Treacy getting a stiff sentence if the eyes of the nation stay on this case up until sentencing.

Her mom may also want this unflattering footage of Josie to act as a cautionary tale for other young people. A sort of visible reminder of what can happen when kids resort to violence to solve their problems, vent their rage. This is the ugly truth of after their actions.

I think there are probably many different reasons her mom is allowing this. My comment was never meant to sound like I was criticizing her. She is tops on my A-1 list of great moms. I would never for a second doubt her motives on anything. She has shown herself to be a wonderful, devoted, loving mom. I think maybe I'm just feeling guilty. When I watched the video (of course I watched it) I felt like I was invading Josie's privacy and I felt bad for watching it, if that makes any sense. Upon reflection, I also think that Josie will understand when her mom explains to her why it was necessary. I also have to agree that you have all brought up many excellent reasons for the videos being made public and they are all great reasons. So, I'll just shut up now. LOL

Nope, I think we all know you have a wonderful heart Belinda and nobody would ever ask you to hold your peace. I for one, love your posts. And as I said, I totally get what you mean.

I only pray that Josie recovers to the point where she can look back at this coverage later and be mortified that the world saw her this way. May she recover to be upset with mom just as my son was upset when I would show his girlfriends pics of him on his potty chair as a toddler.

The lawyer representing Deerfield Beach beating suspect Wayne Treacy said Thursday he had entered a written plea of not guilty on behalf of his 15-year-old client.

Treacy, of Pompano Beach, is accused of trying to kill Josie Lou Ratley, 15, at a Deerfield Beach Middle School campus bus stop on March 17. He is charged as an adult with first-degree attempted murder and, if convicted, faces up to life in prison.

Attorney Russell Williams has not denied Treacy's role in the attack, and has signaled a defense strategy that will focus on Treacy's mental health. Treacy's older brother committed suicide last October, and it was Treacy who found his body.

Just wanted to add a bit about her surgery and the replacement of her skull.

If the brain is swelling, and has no "outlet" near the injury site, the brain be pushed downward through the place where the neck connects. If that happens, the part of our brain that controls things like breathing and all the "auto" things will be ruptured, and most likely death will follow.

The skull is removed to allow the brain to have a place to go other than downward and into herniation. Once the swelling is reduced, and intracranial pressure stabilized, the skull will be replaced, and bone will grow back, protecting the brain again. They do place the removed part into the abdomen so that the bone does not die, but is still inside the skin, and can be used again later for the replacement.

Another reason for removing the skull piece is to evacuate blood and other fluids from a site of bruising and/or bleeding. This itself creates pressure, and can also cause a herniation of the brain downward.

As for her swallowing, that may be temporary. The gag reflex is not located where the language area is, and is ennervated by nerves in the base of the skull which go through the palate and into the throat. (Cranial nerves IX or X). Depending on which nerve was damaged and where, either sensation is destroyed or motor function is destroyed. However, if there is swelling, and over time the swelling reduces, and the swelling has not caused necrosis and/or neuronal death (meaning it still can work, it just is "stunned" into immobility), the chances of her regaining the ability to swallow is there.

When the Drs say she can't communicate, I don't think they're being precise. She may not be able to speak (some of the same nerves used there as in the gag/swallowing reflex), but her shaking her head no means a great deal: she comprehends language, and has retained an alternative method to communicate. The speech area of the brain is called Broca's area, and is located on the left side, just above and behind the ear.

She understands. She communicated her "no" apparently quite clearly. So I'd say she can communicate. Also, some recent findings have shown that Broca's area, long thought to be the only area of speech, is not necessarily so. In some patients with Broca's lesions, the ability to speak has been recovered over time, as the brain retrains and relearns. Difficulty in speech remains, but it is no longer a given that if one has Broca area damage, it is both permanent and irrecoverable.

Her ability to comprehend speech, to me, is more important. For her to be able to interact with her environment is precious, precious, precious. That is huge, and her retaining the ability to understand spoken words and respond appropriately to them is an incredible indication that there is hope for her future. Given time enough and good care, she may well continue to surprise everyone with her healing and recovery.

And Treacy can rot in hell.

Best-

This just warms my heart.
Shows what young people can do when they channel their energy in the right direction.

Mine too! I've been on the sidelines since day one talking with some that are too close to this case and helped turn their fear around into a positive and pro-active stance and become an Advocate for JoJo. I was supposed to attend, but couldn't and it's probably a good thing because when I saw this video, I was truly overwhelmed...I am Cheering Josie on AND her Support System...both are improving by the minute! :woohoo:

"Deerfield school beating victim Josie Lou Ratley released from hospital."
Teenage beating victim Josie Lou Ratley has left the hospital and was taken to a rehabilitation facility, her attorney said Tuesday night.

Ratley family attorney Rick Freedman said the 15-year-old was discharged from Broward General Medical Center, where she has been since a brutal attack on March 17 on the Deerfield Beach Middle School campus.

Ratley now will undergo extensive rehabilitation, Freedman said, including occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy. Freedman would not say where the rehabilitation center is located."

THIS is soo much better news than we were hearing about Josie! The fact that their IS Strength in numbers just sooo perfectly applies as our prayers & positive vibes have come freely to this young Lady since Day One! Now let's refocus those powers to her rehabilitation process! Go Josie, Go!!!

The article says she can not talk or walk, or use her right arm and fingers, so I don't know how much of a good news that is.
How much can someone improve if even after all this time after brain injury, she can not talk or walk?
