GUILTY FL - Wayne Treacy for savage beating of 15yo girl, Deerfield Beach, 17 March 2010

  • #561
Thanks for giving me the benefit of your experience! I am not saying as they mature, I would not loosen some of the restrictions, but only over time, as they proved their responsibility with the new priviledge of having a cel phone.

And I agree, the cel phone will prove a valuable tool for keeping in contact as I too am a "check in" mom who was herself raised by one, lol.

ME o/t also - my dgd has one with gps - we tracked her all weekend! Can't tell you how comforting it was to know where she was all the time!

That said... I do hope Josie continues to recover and WT gets a full sentence. He really was a time bomb. I don't think the adults in his life were paying much attention to him and I do think he had a great need for some adult attention and some counseling. Seems to me, he is a very, very angry young man for some reason.

Unfortunately, I believe that if he received the appropriate attention and counselling after the devastating event of finding his brother, Josie would be a whole person right now. Because his parents apparently couldn't be bothered to see that he was suffering horribly over the death of his brother, Josie must now put her life back together and who knows what will happen to Treacy. I, by no means, give him a PTSD pass, but I do think he was a walking time bomb and no one bothered to notice or act. I can only imagine the sheer horror of finding my brother hanging from a tree. At such a young age, I can only imagine what that did to his mind. So, while I do believe he needs to be held responsible for what he has done, I also believe it could have been avoided if his parents had done the right things for him.

why does the defense continue to get air time and make excuses for this piece of garbage? 'he wasnt thinking about the texts on the way, he was thinking about defending his brother'. give me a break. what a bunch of losers the defense has hired

I agree Belinda, and I will go one further and say that I don't think the emotinal aftermath of finding his brother was the first time his parents let him down and didn't fulfill their obligation as his parents. The dad was in and out of jail how many times? IMO his homelife was never all that terrribly stable and I doubt he was getting any sort of proper modelling behavior from his parents.

That said. I stand by my position that this was premeditated, all the way and hope isn't allowed his disorder defense.

I totally agree. His attorney has been pushing the "mental" angle since the very first moment. Unfortunately, the courts seem to bend over backward to let everyone use some sort of disorder as an excuse for their behavior. If the courts would stop being such suckers, a lot of this nonsense could be avoided to begin with. Now, every case has to be dragged on forever, while every conceivable disorder is put on the table.

Wow, the photos show such amazing progress. I can not believe her face wasn't horribly disfigured after what she endured. Go girl!

It blows my mind that in the comments of some news articles about the text exchange there are actually people who think this punk was justified in what he did. Disgusting!

You know, I think that whole thing of no one taking his threats seriously is a cop-out...of course they didn't - who would? We all know people that when angered run off at the mouth about how they are going to kill so and so or whatever (especially teen boys), and we don't go calling the cops, because 99% of the people that say those thing would never think to actually follow through, because they aren't psychos!

This really makes me wonder how the prosecutors in K's trial hope to convince a jury that she knew he actually intended to follow through, given the above, combined with the fact that he had no visible weapons on him (really, who looks at someone's shoes and says 'my gosh, he's gonna kill someone with those!'), didn't actually attack the first girl he thought was Josie ('almost assaulted' means nothing physical occurred, this isn't horseshoes or hand grenades), and no reasonable person would think that someone would be so idiotic as to try to kick someone to death in a schoolyard filled with hundreds of witnesses (yes, I know it happens, but it's still incredibly rare). Add in their assertion that a tiny thirteen year old girl should have tried to stop a hulking much older boy in a rage (really, Treacy is a pretty big boy) and the fact that this is one of the few cases where the defendant testifying is a good idea (the prosecution wouldn't dare grill her, she really is tiny and it wouldn't go over well with the jury, looks like bullying), and I have to think they are wishing the Sheriff hadn't arrested her before the investigation was complete so they would have had a better idea of what they had to work with. Really, most of the time accessory cases are a slam dunk as the laws are very flexible, but this one just doesn't fit the mold and the odds are against a conviction unless K's attorneys are truly terrible or she gets intimidated into a plea deal.

At least they know that even if they lose the case, they ruined her life (sarcasm). Thanks to Florida's laws allowing the identification of juveniles charged with felonies as juveniles while still sealing records of the actual trials - when she applies to college or for any decent job, a google search will tell them all about what she's accused of, but nothing about why she may have been acquitted or charges dropped - that is if some idiot vigilante doesn't catch her on the street and kick her head in. (can you tell I'm disgusted by this law, and the media going along with it?)

All JMO, keep in mind I'm an opinionated git that shouldn't be taken too seriously!

ETA: Keep in mind also that I'm not saying whether she truly knew or not, just that the way things look so far, the state has jack for a case other than having won the trial by media (really, an article above calling her 'the Manson girl'? WTH???) - and that if she really didn't know, then this girl has been victimized by her boyfriend, the media, police, prosecutors, and the juvie ID law (if she is acquitted, she'll need to change her name and move far away if she wants to have a life without fear) - and victimizing someone to avenge a victim just strikes me as very, very wrong.

The defense psychologist better come up with a better explanation than PSD over his brother, because WT threatened to kill JR a full 30 minutes BEFORE any comment was ever made about the brother.

and FWIW.....where is the school's responsibility in allowing them to be constantly texting during school? At my kids high school, any student caught touching a phone during the school day receives an automatic detention and the phone is confiscated and not returned until the end of the next school day after the detention has been served. For one student a faculty member told me about, the phone was taken on the Friday morning before spring break. He was without his phone throughout the week of spring break and until after school the following Monday when he had served his detention.
There was no school work or learning or attention being paid to teachers during that lengthy time period of the texting exchange by EITHER student.

I can attest to the schools and cell phones down here. I was subbing in a middle school - 8th graders came in - one 🤬🤬🤬🤬 in particular came in, went to the back of the room, threw himself in a desk and propped his feet up on the desk in front of him. He took out his cell and started "playing" on it. I walked out to him and put my hand out and said "give me the phone".

Are you ready for this?

This kid looked at me and said "F- you b-tch. You ain't gettin' my f-ing phone m-f-er. Now go back over there and leave me the f- alone!"

Of course I walked over and pushed the button for security. THEY NEVER CAME!!!

Was I scared? Yep - this 🤬🤬🤬🤬 was scary. Did I say something once I got to the office? Yep - which is why I can't get a job - because I stand up for what is right instead of "just going with the flow".

So, yes, our schools here in South Florida are nothing more that "pre-prisons" as I like to call them, 'xceptin' there are no wardens, no guards and the inmates run free!!!!

Beating victim Josie Lou Ratley is home from a South Florida rehabilitation center, but still has to go back regularly to receive treatment as an outpatient, a family spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Ratley, 15, was attacked March 17 at a Deerfield Beach Middle School bus stop. She spent six weeks at Broward General Medical Center, much of that time in a medically induced coma. In late April, she was transferred to an undisclosed rehabilitation center.

She suffered brain damage and has been relearning basic life skills such as brushing her teeth, walking and getting dressed, her family said.

The date of her release from the center was not disclosed. Ratley's mother and her lawyer said two weeks ago that Ratley's release was imminent. Attorney Sean Domnick said Medicaid would not pay for an indefinite stay, and the decision to have Ratley treated as an outpatient makes maximum use of more than $50,000 in contributions from donors.

Yet another step on the road of recovery. Congratulations to the Ratleys. I know Josie's mom has to be thrilled to have her home again. Each small step is also a huge milestone. Thoughts and prayers as we strive for the next one.

I'm so :furious: right now. Here - read this...........

Treacy's confession shows remorse for Deerfield Beach attack, denies intent to kill girl
Left alone, Wayne Treacy laments: 'I'm a monster'

By Rafael A. Olmeda, Sun Sentinel

5:21 a.m. EDT, June 4, 2010
Left alone during a two-hour interrogation after he beat Josie Lou Ratley so severely she suffered brain damage, Wayne Treacy scolded himself for losing control of his rage.

"I'm a monster," Treacy, 15, said, apparently unaware that he was being recorded at the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Talking to himself, to the sheriff's detective interviewing him, and to his mother, who came into the interrogation room for five minutes, Treacy insisted he never intended to harm the 15-year-old girl when he confronted her at Deerfield Beach Middle School on March 17.

"I didn't plan on hitting her," he told his mother, Donna Powers. "You know I rant when I talk to my friends and I say stuff like that! I only wanted to yell at her. And when I saw her, everything just …"

Witnesses and prosecutors say Treacy stomped repeatedly on Ratley's head with steel-toe boots at a campus bus stop. She spent weeks in a medically induced coma and must relearn basic skills such as brushing her teeth, walking and getting dressed, her family says.

"This girl is in pretty bad shape right now, dude," Sheriff's Detective Shane Schroeder told the sobbing Treacy a few hours after the beating. "Right now she's having to have brain surgery."

"Oh my God!" Treacy responded, gasping for air.

Waring - this "rag" of a newspaper is really trying to garner sympathy for this criminal.

Just makes me so mad!

  • #578
The rag may be leaning toward Treacy but their story doesn't convince me to change my opinions one iota.

  • #579
I cant help it, I feel bad for him too. he was plenty old enough to know better and while plenty of kids his age do stupid and self destructive things under stress they arent usually so terrible for another person or so life changing.

before you guys abuse me for having sympathy please keep in mind that I have a child his age that 2 years ago lost his father to suicide. now, mine did things like self harm and stealing and he's sorted himself out but I like to think the ties he has with me and the rest of his family helped him through that. this kid, treacy, had nothing of the sort. I would have yet more sympathy for this kid if it were not for the fact that he did travel a few miles and search around for a girl he had no idea who she even was, that kinda lets the "I didnt mean to even hit her" kinda go right out the window.

maybe he did, maybe he didnt, but he had lots of time to decide. and now he's got even more time to feel sorry for himself and for her.

I just feel so bad for him that he had to terribly wound and nearly kill a girl he didnt even know before his family seemed to even notice something was wrong.

this is not pure evil. this is a severely disturbed 15 year old child.

"There goes med school."

Really? Really? OH BOO HOO cry me a river, how selfish. I am sorry but it is so obvious his "remorse" is that he doesn't want to be in jail.

And I didn't realize the boots were his brother's. That makes his deliberate choice to wear them that much more obvious...they served two purposes. As weapons, and as a symbol of revenge. Didn't mean to hurt her, my butt!
