On sky news they had an aviation specialist saying that it looked as though the landing gear was down and the ‘flaps’ were in the wrong position for take off. The expert said it could have been because they were trying to make an emergency landing so the pilots put them in that position OR that they malfunctioned on take off. They said the latter would make it harder for the plane to lift.

All I can ethically say (even post retirement) is that my husband flies international a LOT - there are certain airlines I won't let him book on for good reason. There's also certain airplanes he knows not to fly on. I'll leave it at that, as that's my opinion only. This is a tragedy that I'm sure will be updated in the media throughout the day. My heart goes out to the families left behind and the first resonders.

Can you pm me which ones to avoid please. As I’ve got older I have become a very nervous flyer.
However my 19 year old was on a flight this morning first time without a parent so this incident really shook me.

From that article, the location of his seat 11A. Looks like he was right by the exit door and, crucially, had no seat in front of him. Something evidently hit him in face, but what a lucky fella to have walked away from that.

Plus if he was buckled into his seat... but then I'd imagine they all were for takeoff, so I don't know if that's what made the difference ?

The nose seemed to be up as if the pilot was trying desperately to keep it in the air rather than attempting to land.

Standard practice, I believe, is that they reach a point of no return during take-off where they are supposed to keep going and try to fix any problems once in the air.

From all the accident vids I've watched, which does not make me an expert, just someone who's curious about how these things happen, I would have thought they hadn't yet retracted the landing gear rather than having it down for a possible landing. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can weigh in on that. I know nothing about flaps, too technical for me.

The landing gear is clearly down for sure. I can't tell about the flaps from the video I saw. It also looks to me like the plane is slow, like it can't enough speed to generate lift? Bird strike? I don't see any smoke or anything coming from either engine.

I have read some theories about what might have happened, but too early to tell.

Very, very sorry for the passengers, the crew, the potential victims on the ground, the families, the Republic of India.

We flew from Mumbai to Delhi by Air India, and it was a very good flight. With 1.5 billion people and technology developing, ultimately, it will end up being in the group of statistical probabilities, but I am sure it doesn’t help at this moment.

We shall wait till the results.

Watching the video, the aircraft appears to remain in a nose up attitude up until impact. Strange.
