Florida - Coronavirus Covid-19 #2

Yes, this is true. That is the truth. It is not set up to help people out. None of the state systems are set up for this type of service. This is unprecedented.

MOO I attribute it to state growth. I moved to FL in 2008 when the state had a population of 18 Million people. We have no industry down here outside of tourism, retail/service. Yet we have more and more people moving to FL every single day. Understandably to avoid paying state taxes. I know a lot of people from CA are moving here for that very reason. What about the rest of those who move down here to eke out a living? Unless you have some serious outstanding computer skills and can work remotely like I can, the only jobs are in service/retail which do not pay a lot of money. And with the pandemic, you can be out of a job very quickly.

And if the numbers themselves aren't bad enough, the Fl. Dept. of Business and Professional Regulations is meeting with bar owners to come up with a way to circumvent the bar shutdown.
Bar owners were told if they apply for food permit they would be allowed to open.
So some bar owners in Orlando have gotten the
food permit by buying and placing a food truck in front of bar on city street.
I understand bar owners wanting to stay in business but the safety of the public should
override the business in this case, IMO.

I’ve noticed the restaurants that have small bars in them have fuller parking lots. Two being The Public House and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. They have to have more food sales than liquor sales, was my understanding, in order for the bar to remain open. Seriously, how many of these places are being monitored at this point?

I seriously doubt anyone is following up on the
legalities of these businesses. Seems like the state is 'in their pocket' to skirt the law at this time. The food truck pics on my Orlando news
told me this.

Yet keep in mind, that the curve will naturally come down, without anything being done. It's just that some espouting such are many months off

Yeah, Florida is doing great. Racing towards herd immunity by quantum leaps every month.

My local news WFTV mentioned a few days ago that between July 1st and August 1st, Florida
cases increased by 343,000 cases. That's about right averaging 10-11,000 cases per day which is where we were before the testing site shutdowns
for the hurricane.
With no serious intervention, we're headed to 800,000 cases by early September.
And another 6,000 new deaths plus today's
numbers= 14,000 deaths.

Florida reports record COVID-19 hospitalizations
Florida reports record number of COVID-19 hospitalizations

Florida shattered its record for weekly hospitalizations, making it one of the biggest coronavirus hot spots in the nation.

Some 3,355 people were admitted to Florida hospitals from Sunday, Aug. 2, to Monday, the state’s COVID-19 dashboard showed.

Last Wednesday alone, 621 people were admitted to hospitals, The Orlando Sentinel reported. And in total, 30,785 people have been hospitalized in the state with COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

“These are devastating numbers,” Dr. Sadiya Khan, an epidemiologist and assistant professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, told NBC News.

The blame, Khan said, should be laid at the feet of the Florida leaders who downplayed the danger early on and who have been slow to impose mask mandates and other public health measures.

“In Florida there has been this ongoing controversy about the severity of the coronavirus crisis,” Khan said. “There has been a politicization of the issue of wearing masks. This should never have happened, and now we’re seeing the results.”

Overnight, Florida reported 4,155 new cases and 91 deaths. The total number of cases as of Monday was 532,806, and the statewide death toll was 8,314 and rising, according to the latest NBC News tally.

In terms of the sheer number of COVID-19 cases, Florida was just behind California, which leads the nation with 560,159, the NBC News figures show.

Desantis or Denial?

Interesting, I just looked at Miami Dade County employment website, all new hire candidates are required to obtain their own Covid-19 nasal test medical screening. Results can not be more than 14 days old. And there is now a requirement for pre-employment medical examination.

So much for confidential health information.

snipped
ORLANDO, Fla. —

The new deaths bring the death toll to 8,553 Florida residents since March.

Florida also reported 5,886 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. There have now been 542,792 cases reported in the state.

Florida's number of official COVID-19 cases in children has more than doubled over the past month, data from the state showed Tuesday.

In essence, this is a potential death sentence for anyone who interacts with a MCSO deputy - from reporting a crime, requesting a police report, to getting pulled over for a speeding ticket. I would hesitate to call 911 there... Of course, it puts the deputies themselves in danger. I’m glad I don’t live in that county.

DeSantis just needs to shut up and let the parents and school districts make decisions that work for them and their kids. His kids are not school age yet. He has no a clue. Every family needs to make the decision that works for them their little learners.

My cousin's boy is deaf, has cochlear implants thus requires multiple levels of instruction, therapies, etc. Masks are required for his school. All of these services are provided for him at no charge. There is no way this precious little boy can learn wearing a mask or learn from a teacher wearing a mask. He must see his/her mouth move as he is also a lip reader. My cousin and her husband have made the very difficult decision to home school him for 5th grade. As a result, they must now pay for all the services that were once free. They can afford it and have insurance to help. But, they are overwhelmed at this prospect of ensuring their child doesn't fall behind.

This Republican governor just compared kids going back to school to killing Osama bin Laden - CNNPolitics

Snips:
Look, there's no question that the decisions being made by administrators, parents and politicians as to whether kids should return to school amid the still-ongoing coronavirus pandemic is a very, very tough question -- with good people on all sides of it. There's a public health argument. An economic argument. An educational argument. And on and on and on.
But none of this is in any way comparable to a group of Navy SEALs killing bin Laden. Like, at all.

I guess what DeSantis was going for was the idea that even after one of the helicopters crash-landed during the raid on bin Laden's compound, the SEAL team still kept going to finish their mission. And so, even as there are all sorts of challenges to sending kids back to school, Florida is going to overcome those obstacles to make sure parents have the choice between in-person and virtual learning? I think?

DeSantis' comparison comes amid go/no-go decision made by school districts across the state of Florida. At an event earlier this week in Hillsborough County, which last week voted for only virtual school for the first month of school, the governor dismissed health concerns by offering this: "Nothing's risk-free in life."

This is a direct result from the leadership of the state of Florida, and other government officials. It puts people who are at high risk in an impossible situation. Just stay home, because we don't care about you. That is the message.
