As White House task force warns Florida of possible COVID-19 uptick, state tries to keep report from public

There are “early warning signs” that COVID-19 cases are ticking up in Florida – in the Villages and several counties, including Brevard – and the state should be closely tracking the data and reacting with “increased mitigation” in those areas, according to a little-known report that the White House Coronavirus Task Force sends Florida each week.

“Testing must increase statewide," the report recommends.

For nearly five months now, the task force, which was formed earlier this year and is chaired by Vice President Mike Pence, has been sending a detailed COVID-19 report to all state governors, providing county and state-level trends and a series of recommendations. But Florida is among more than a dozen states to withhold those reports from the public.

On Oct. 16, after the Orlando Sentinel asked Gov. Ron DeSantis' office for the latest task force report, it took getting the Sentinel’s lawyers involved and five work days before the state released its Oct. 11 Task Force report on Thursday.

Not surprising.... my friend and I were in her Jeep with the sun roof open today driving down a busy road. The traffic was horrible, every parking lot we went by, no matter what the business was, had nearly every parking spot filled.

Florida is on the verge of a COVID-19 resurgence

Snips:
As of Friday, the number of new COVID cases per day in Florida had increased 36.4% over the past week (3,335) compared to 14 days earlier (2,445.) That followed a 6.1% decrease in the state’s average daily cases in the two weeks from Sept. 25 to Oct. 9.

The White House Coronavirus Task Force as recently as Oct. 11 cited “early warning signs” of an uptick in Florida cases.

A report obtained Thursday by the Orlando Sentinel came with recommendations for more testing and “mask and physical distancing messages for all residents, both in public and private spaces.”

Florida, which had been withholding the report from the public, released it under pressure from the Sentinel’s lawyers.

“There’s a real effort to obfuscate the pandemic, for reasons beyond my comprehension, because sticking your head in the sand doesn’t make it go away,” said Dr. Aileen Marty, professor of infectious diseases at Florida International University in Miami.

So your kids have “severe allergies” but you don’t want them to wear a mask at school? I can’t wrap my brain around that. I don’t even know if I believe this parent. They want to make their kid a c-19 martyr???

I have a child with severe food allergies, asthma and other medical needs. Her immune system has and always will be fragile. I can’t imagine putting constitution and legal rights a priority over her health.

Parents sue Sarasota County schools over COVID-19 mask mandate

In a sworn affidavit, Collazo and Cook said that they have three children enrolled in Sarasota County schools with “severe” allergies. The other two plaintiffs did not specify whether their children have health issues, but did say that they believe mask wearing is not within their children’s best interests, physically, emotionally or psychologically.

17,043 people have died from COVID-19 in Florida

The Florida Department of Health on Monday reported 4,651 new cases of COVID-19 in its latest report for the day prior.

The statewide total now is 812,063 cases reported since tracking began in March.

Case increases in recent days have caused the statewide 14-day moving average to rise since about the beginning of October. As a whole, the U.S. last week broke record after record of new coronavirus cases faster than the number of new tests, according to The COVID Tracking Project.

That is suggestive of the "uncontrolled spread of COVID-19," the group said.

It looks like in St. Pete they are socially distancing their cars. I expect an uptick in many many areas as I have friends in Jax that plan on getting tested right before T'giving as they are having friends over (yep, they are family friends .... nope... I'll be at home as I have been for 8 months.. and yes, one of my family is going... I have not seen that family member even with repeated invitations). Also, planning on getting a test 2-3 days prior... good luck with that "plan" and getting it then.

Insanity. And a negative test, is just a "snapshot" of that moment in time. It does not mean that a person is free from Covid, just that the viral load isn't high enough to register at that point in time.

Sen. Rick Scott tests positive for coronavirus “Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said Friday he had tested positive for COVID-19. Scott tweeted he was experiencing “very mild symptoms” and planned to work from home. “Wear a mask. Socially distance. Quarantine if you come in contact with someone positive like I did. We will beat this together, but we all must be responsible,” he said on Twitter.”

What did he do and say prior to this?

3rd in the country..... sigh.

Florida adds more than 8,000 coronavirus cases for third day in a row (msn.com)

Saturday’s cases brought Florida’s total to 931,827 across the state. There were 41 resident deaths reported on Saturday, which brought the statewide total to 17,930 Floridians. A non resident also died, bringing the total non-resident deaths to 222. The state’s combined death toll is now 18,152.

Florida has the third-most coronavirus cases as the virus caseload rises across the country, trailing only Texas and California.

Hospitalizations: There were 3,425 people hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of coronavirus across Florida, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration. About 765 are being treated in Tampa Bay area hospitals.

What did he do and say prior to this?
He did like every other leader in this state. He either didn’t wear one at all or he wore one for a few minutes. I think many in the public eye are wearing them for photos and then removing them.

Florida is 100% money driven. I honestly don’t think they’ll ever mandate masks or stay at home orders at the state level. Local leaders here and there are keeping mask mandates in place. It’s amazing how many are fighting it tho.

@PayrollNerd have you noticed, are there less snowbirds this year? Or is it the same?

Based on traffic, I’d say it’s the same. Once the 1st phase of shock wore off, and travel bans were lifted, people returned to their Florida homes.
