Florida - Coronavirus Covid-19 #2

  • #381
In a normal year, we would be in Florida: for various reasons, including the pandemic, we are probably not going to make it this year. We are presently in Michigan---- where at least we have a Governor with common sense, who puts appropriate restrictions in place. De Santis apparently takes his orders from, shall we say, higher up. Take care of yourself.
DeSantis has his eyes on the "big house" except I'm pretty sure he's picked the one without bars. I just hope we don't lose too many Floridians when it's all said and done. I worry more for my new found paternal family that I still want to get to know. It took me 57 years to find out who the heck I am and now I can't spend time with them. They are equally sad over this entire mess.

Oh, that is unfortunate--- there is light at the end of the tunnel with vaccines, but it will be a while yet before we can get together with our families-----

More stats at link.

Florida adds 11,682 coronavirus cases, 74 deaths (msn.com)

More than 1.1 million people have been infected statewide since March. The state has added 10,885 cases and 102 deaths per day on average this week. It can take officials up to two weeks to confirm and report a COVID-19 death, meaning the number of deaths added does not necessarily reflect the number of people who died the previous day.

Florida has had the third-highest number of cases, following behind Texas, with 1.5 million cases, and California, with 1.7 million cases. The three states also have the highest populations in the United States.

And, I still believe that is a huge under count. The problem with the data is that Florida did not count people who died in Florida, but "lived" somewhere else...my opinion, if you die someplace, your death, there, should count where you died.

Florida did the same "Bait and Switch" with data for positive Covid cases. If it was, for example, a "Snowbird", it seems like Florida, in a byzantine effort to minimize Covid, attributed the positive case to where the person was actually from.

The data is meaningless.

Excuse me Floridians, please don’t have a heart attack or get in a trauma situation because I have to dole out vaccines .... said no medical professional ever. Good grief. How about instead of punishing the medical staff, you order the National Guard or some such group, to set up vaccine sites and get it done.

DeSantis says Florida hospitals that are slow to administer COVID-19 vaccines will see supplies redistributed

"Hospitals that do not do a good job of getting the vaccine out will have their allocations transferred to hospitals that are doing a good job in getting the vaccine out," DeSantis said during a briefing.

Mismanagement and cluster. Did we really expect anything else from this administration?

At least someone besides me calls it like they see it. He is entirely too defensive. He has already said he’s going to limit distribution if hospitals don’t get the vaccine out timely. His time, apparently.

CNN's Brianna Keilar calls Gov. Ron DeSantis 'an 🤬🤬🤬' for scolding reporter

DeSantis criticized the CNN reporter for not researching her question. He said that the coronavirus vaccine was distributed to hospitals and the hospitals decide how to dispense it.

I bet there are many more who have come up to him and said my family member died. Define “low” numbers. FL is in the top 3 in the country!

DeSantis takes high road after CNN host calls him 'an 🤬🤬🤬' for scolding reporter: 'Doesn't impact me'

"You know what, I don't seek validation by the media," DeSantis told Tucker Carlson. "What I seek is supporting the citizens of my state, and I can't tell you as this pandemic has worn on, the number of times someone has come up to me with tears in their eyes saying 'if it wasn't for you, my kid would not be in school and I would not have my job.'

DeSantis told Carlson Tuesday that he wears the media scrutiny as a "badge of honor," calling it an indication of his state's success in safely reopening schools and businesses while maintaining a low COVID-19 mortality rate statewide.

Of course the numbers are "low", when you choose what data to report, and how. Top 3 in the country? The excess death data will tell the real truth. The problem is that it almost seems to be top secret information in Florida. It would probably be easier to obtain the "Nuclear Codes".

Well, well, well. Aren't we special? <insert eye roll>

Florida has nearly half of known US cases of COVID variant (msn.com)

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — New data from the Centers for Disease Control shows Florida has nearly half the known cases in the United States of a mutated and likely more contagious strain of the coronavirus. The development came Friday as Florida reported nearly 20,000 more cases in a single day.

A CDC map shows that Florida had 22 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant that emerged in Britain. It showed other cases in California, which has reported 26 cases, Colorado with two, and New York and Georgia each with one reported case.

Statistics from the Florida Department of Health showed Friday's total of new coronavirus cases — 19,530 — almost reached the previous day's record of 19,816 new daily cases.

Florida's death toll from the virus also keeps climbing, reaching 23,011 deaths on Friday.

The positivity rate is high in SWFL. I get my 1st Covid vaccine in the morning. Blood draw before and after. Then the 2nd dose Feb 11th. I can’t wait for this mess to be over, even if I have to get it every year!

Good. My husband got his first shot today.

Rebekah Jones, Florida’s fired COVID-19 dashboard manager, to turn herself in on warrant (msn.com)

On Twitter Saturday afternoon, Jones said she would turn herself into Florida authorities, after she was informed of the FDLE warrant which has to do with documents she received or downloaded from state sources. She said she and her attorney were not told what exactly she had in her possession that was illegal or details of the alleged crime, but that she was only facing one criminal charge.

However, she said an FDLE agent did confirm to her that the new allegation had “nothing to do with” the basis of the search warrant that led to a raid on her Tallahassee home last month, which she and others criticized how police responded, some calling it heavy-handed and an attempt to silence a critic. FDLE officials have defended the execution of that search warrant.

“FDLE found no evidence of a message sent last Nov(ember) to DOH staff telling them to ‘speak out’ on any of the devices they took — the entire basis for the raid on my home in Dec(ember),” Jones wrote on Twitter. “Still, the state has issued a warrant for my arrest — even though the ‘crime’ is not related to the warrant.”

This is so sad that there doesn't seem to be any unemployment official who can at least speak up and offer reassurances. At least speak up with a status on the unemployment backlog.

'I lost everything': laid-off workers battle Florida's chaotic benefit system (msn.com)

Through 2020, Florida was the second worst state in the US at paying unemployment benefits on time. Internal audits had uncovered various issues with the state’s unemployment system for years before the pandemic hit, and elected officials are still conducting reviews on how to fix the state’s ongoing unemployment failures.

Republican Gov. DeSantis is taking credit as Florida booms a year into pandemic - CNNPolitics

Interesting story about the success of Florida's approach to the pandemic. CNN has been pretty outspoken in their condemnation of States that didn't pursue draconian mitigation strategies, which makes this piece this feel important - like it's a change in messaging.

What is really great are all those kids on spring break in Florida, packed in like sardines in bars and restaurants and guess what, because they are young, they won't get sick-instead, they will take their asymptomatic azzes and spread the virus back home, where ever, they came from to their parents and grandparents.

“The White House report says the community transmission level in the area over the last seven days has been high, which puts it in the red zone. The increases appear to be driven by rising cases in people ages 15 to 34.

But in a positive trend, statewide mass vaccination efforts focused on older people appear to be having an effect. In the last week, new cases in people older than 65 declined 7%, according to Florida health department data.“
