Not keeping the statistics on home/original location seems so foolish to me. We learn from our mistakes as humans. We can track and prep for the next epidemic by learning how we failed. We can improve. I’m baffled by the leadership at all levels that doesn't recognize this fundamental truth. Our businesses, states and our country need to follow the abiding truths we already know.

Leaders don't stay in one job very long (unlike physicians and teachers and scientists). Many are elected, the rest are constantly on the hunt for better jobs. It takes real experience and expertise, over a long time, to know how to respond to an emergency.

"We" can improve, but only if we require people in charge to study the issues they oversee, get formal training in how to figure things out. It would not hurt us at all to have relevant leaders travel to places who handled this much better than we did.

Even if the current crop of decision-makers were to "learn" what to do, most of them are of an age where they will be out of the system in 5-10 years and the new person who gets the job may well come from a different region or walk of life - or be much younger and not able to apply their life experience (because right now, they're doing something completely different).

Unlike many nations, the US has a very fluid technological and political social structure. We need data, manuals, policies and planning. The public needs to push all its leaders to make this transparent. Of course, if people are more interested in just getting back to their regular lives, that's not going to happen.

I don't know what to say about Florida - that's a staggering number of nursing homes. California, with twice as many people, is predicted to have about 1500 deaths; Florida - almost 5000. I keep rereading that stat and refreshing pages and hoping my eyes are deceiving me.

If you’re physically able and need work in SWFL, Amazon is hiring. It pays better than unemployment that’s for sure.

Amazon is hiring another 75K workers

Yes the stats are so important right now - thank you !

My personal opinion is that more people in ALF's will die of COVID19, and I wonder if they will even be reported as such. If they are not tested, can they write that?

Good question. I had read somewhere that deaths expected to be from C-19 would be labeled as that. However, would that really be accurate? If a person has a heart attack and they were exposed to C-19, can they tell during autopsy if the person really had it? Do they bother to test them at that point? I don't believe we'll ever see accurate stats, at least not for years. Research will need to be done to get to the truth. Sort of like post hurricane research and post 9/11 research, initially the numbers published are generally off to some degree.

Another issue is the tourist trade. FL leaders don't want the general public to know how bad it is. They want to present a filtered view and control the narrative. C-19 is not going to pull any punches, just like death, it knows no race, no wealth, no gender, or anything other factor us humans use to differentiate people.

Nursing homes are notoriously understaffed, and as a result, under-performing in care plus horribly under funded. (I worked in one as a Business Office Manager.) The staff does their best, always. It's not the carers, heaven knows, they are amazing, its the business model. They need to redesign them, the old model just doesn't work anymore. I don't know what the answer is but I do know they need to evolve. JMO from experience.

Yep, that’s our gov...isn’t this a contact (sport)?

WWE Considered ‘Essential’ Business in Florida, Allowed to Hold Events During Pandemic: Mayor

"With some conversation with the governor's office regarding the governor's order, they were deemed an essential business. So, therefore, they were allowed to remain open," Demings told NBC affiliate WESH-TV.

The office of Gov. Ron DeSantis said the sports entertainment organization is essential to Florida’s economy and approved the events being produced to a national audience as long as they were closed to the general public.

Oh my word. Do our medical professionals really need to waste precious resources on people who intentionally beat each other up???? Nobody gets to control the narrative, only the disease can.

Floridians should keep social distancing until a vaccine exists, surgeon general says

Snip:
TALLAHASSEE — Floridians will be practicing social distancing measures and wearing face masks until a coronavirus vaccine exists, even if that’s not for another year, Florida Surgeon General Scott Rivkees said Monday.

Speaking to reporters, Rivkees said Floridians needed to get used to current precautions, such as avoiding crowds of 10 or more and wearing face masks in public.

“Until we get a vaccine, which is a while off, this is going to be our new normal and we need to adapt and protect ourselves,” he said.

Snip:
Before he left, Rivkees was asked to elaborte on his comments. He said that the current social distancing measures are the only way to stop person-to-person spread of the virus.

“As long as we’re going to have COVID in the environment, and this is a tough virus, we’re going to have to practice these measures so that we are all protected,” Rivkees said.

It is going to be very difficult for people who live in ALF's to avoid crowds of more than 10 people. Some of the smaller group homes, funded by Medicaid have four people in a bedroom.

At least he is not micromanaging the state. Perhaps, he is letting local officials decide what works best in their areas. After all, what might be needed oversight in Miami, would be absolute overkill in Port St. Lucie.

That being said, it does seem like Florida is a like a giant cruise ship, just meandering along, without any real leadership or direction. Full steam ahead. Just like the Titanic.

Florida coronavirus update for Tuesday: Deaths up to 524, could still approach 5,000

With Florida coronavirus deaths now past 500, the latest projections from one model show the state may still see more than 10 times the fatalities by summer.
.......
The total deaths in the state could range from 1,250 to 13,759, with the median number of fatalities at 4,748 by June 25. The projections released Monday assume social distancing efforts continue through May. At present, the statewide stay-at-home order from Gov. Ron DeSantis only runs through April 30.
.......
For Florida, though, the daily fatalities is still on an upward curve, now with Florida’s deadliest possible day due to the virus projected to fall on May 6, which is later than previous models.
