77,000 furloughed Disney World workers could get FastPass to jobless benefits

About 77,000 Walt Disney World employees set to be furloughed next week could get a FastPass to Florida’s unemployment system, which has seen hundreds of thousands of other workers face lengthy delays in getting benefits.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said Tuesday he’s considering a plan to add automatically the information of the Disney workers into the system, in anticipation of the large influx. He added that it wouldn’t mean those employees would jump to the front of the line, but by getting their information into the system, they’ll skip a key step that has frustrated other laid-off workers who’ve encountered system crashes and busy helplines.

We haven't even peaked yet, not even close. Good grief.
This is where all 50 states stand on reopening - CNN

Florida

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a stay-at-home order for Floridians until April 30.
The governor did not close down the state's beaches as spring breakers partied last month, has not approved retroactive unemployment benefits for those who have lost their jobs and continues to push hydroxychloroquine, a still unproven drug to treat coronavirus.
DeSantis is considering re-opening schools in the state, falsely claiming the coronavirus hasn't killed anyone under 25.

My kid, who's lost her job, tried to do the online application on her computer and on mine. It crashed repeatedly. She finally printed the form. It took the last of the printer ink and 3 hours to complete it and then it was mailed. They wanted to know every penny she made for the last 18 months. She was a college student who graduated in Dec. She's not exactly rich living off grants. Ridiculous. Her W-2 from the university finally arrived Sat. She couldn't get access to the portal to get her W-2 or her 1098-T because she graduated and the school shut down. We have no idea if we guessed correctly. Her former boss at the pet store is applying to get the Payroll Protection funds from the gov't but who knows if that will happen. Now we're wondering if she'll see any money for the first 2 weeks because the boss made it sound like they'd pay her so she waited to apply for unemployment. It's such a dang nightmare.

Hillsborough county...

A Florida inmate who was among 100 prisoners freed last month to help slow the spread of coronavirus was back behind bars Monday – taken into custody in connection with a murderthat happened one day after his release, authorities say.
......
“There is no question Joseph Williams took advantage of this health emergency to commit crimes while he was out of jail awaiting resolution of a low-level, non-violent offense,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in announcing the arrest. “Every murder, every violent crime, especially those involving a gun, is a sickening example of the worst in our community, especially at a time when our community is working relentlessly to fight against the spread of this deadly COVID-19.”

596 deaths? I still think that is an under count.

There is no way that they are testing all of those old folks in Broward county and Dade.

They’re not testing enough people while they’re alive. It makes me wonder if they’re testing at death. Some families don’t want an autopsy or can’t afford one.

Exactly. So, old people died. Shrug. So, will these folks even be included in the count of COVID19 deaths?

Correct.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention counts only deaths in which the presence of the coronavirus is confirmed in a laboratory test. “We know that it is an underestimation,” agency spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund said.

A widespread lack of access to testing in the early weeks of the U.S. outbreak means people with respiratory illnesses died without being counted, epidemiologists say. Even now, some people who die at home or in overburdened nursing homes are not being tested, according to funeral directors, medical examiners and nursing home representatives.

Postmortem testing by medical examiners varies widely across the country, and some officials say testing the dead is a misuse of scarce resources that could be used on the living. In addition, some people who have the virus test negative, experts say.

As a result, public health officials and government leaders lack a complete view of the pandemic’s death toll as they assess its course and scramble to respond.

Seminole nursing home has dozens of coronavirus cases; patients taken to three hospitals

The nursing home was reluctant to send patients to the hospital but were overwhelmed, according to a Pinellas County commissioner.

SEMINOLE — About 30 or so patients and staff members at a Pinellas County nursing home have tested positive for the coronavirus, county officials said.

Several patients from Freedom Square Seminole Nursing Pavilion were transferred to three local hospitals Tuesday night, Assistant County Administrator Lourdes Benedict told the Tampa Bay Times. Other residents of the facility at 7800 Liberty Lane will be tested, officials said, and the grounds are being cleaned.

Benedict said there are 28 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus that can lead to severe respiratory infections, at the Seminole nursing home. Florida Politics, a political website that first wrote about the infections, said an estimated 30 patients and six staffers have tested presumptive positive.

Pinellas County Commissioner Pat Gerard said she was told the facility was reluctant to transfer the patients to hospitals, but did so when they became overwhelmed by the outbreak.

But despite precautions, the number of COVID-19 diagnoses within long-term care facilities continues to grow. So far, there are 1,332 cases in Florida long-term care facilities, according to the latest state data released Wednesday. Employees say they have struggled to fulfill requirements to wear masks and other protective gear because of a worldwide shortage.

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday announced plans for the Florida National Guard to assist “strike teams” that conduct COVID-19 tests inside nursing homes and assisted living facilities around the state. Teams have already been sent to 93 facilities were residents tested positive, he said.

@SeesSeas

I wonder if the reason that folks are kept in the homes in the beginning is because if kept in nursing homes in their own "ward", they get big bucks? Years ago family member was charged by the home over $1,000/day when in their on campus nursing ward... just a thought... not a conspiracy theory. But WHY does it take so damn long for these outbreaks in nursing homes to get to such a critical number prior to something being done?

@dixiegirl1035 I have worked in nursing homes, and have realized that the "ideal" nursing home patient, is within 6 months of death. The assessments now, for actual "nursing homes" means that the applicant will meet that criteria. Otherwise, they are considered for "rehabilitation", and transferred out after 90 days.

Anyway, the highest maintenance patients are the ones with dementia, as they may be physically healthy, but meet assessment for care, because they can't take care of themselves.

Because of this, these patients don't get any vaccines, even for pneumonia, flu, and often, don't even have orders for nutrition. Meaning, if the patient doesn't eat, they won't get assistance or even an order for a protein drink.

The team wouldn't have really bothered with a rampant infection of COVID19 in this population.

FWIW, I couldn't deal with the ethics and moral issues in LTC, and left the field.

Coronavirus: Florida nursing homes want immunity from COVID-19 lawsuits

Of course.

If you were a medical POA for your family member in a nursing home, wouldn't it have been appropriate for the nursing home to notify you of an outbreak of COVID19 in the nursing home of your family member? Yes.

So, that YOU would be able to make the medical decisions regarding the care of your family member? Yes.

Instead, nursing homes did not disclose this information to anyone. Complete lack of accountability.

Well that takes the cake for today’s most appalling news report. ITA the lack of disclosure is super concerning. DeSantis needs to let the courts decide this issue. A guy who thinks it’s ok to gather for church services & wrestling events does not have the mental clarity to decide. Imho
