Florida reports nearly 4,000 new coronavirus cases, a record single-day increase

The Florida Department of Health is reporting an additional 3,822 cases of coronavirus on Friday, bringing the state total to at least 89,748 according to data released by the state.

Friday's numbers mark the highest number of reported cases in a single day the state has seen, according to to the Florida Department of Health.

The previous record was set just yesterday: Florida reported 3,207 additional coronavirus cases on Thursday.

On Thursday, the state of Florida had reported a total of 85,926 cases.

Well, Florida is moving right along.....

Speaking of the snowbirds, my dad and sister generally spend the spring and summer in Michigan and winter in Florida. It seems like everything is upside down and backwards. They have been waiting to return to Michigan when travel felt safer, spent about a month or two at home. Now that Florida is the unsafest place to be, they are not only still stuck there but are behaving like life is back to normal. Going to the gym etc. My sister is unable to control my father.... he’s 90 and forgets about COVID constantly.

@LeeAnnB I believe that the older you are, the less likely people are to really be upset about this virus. My husband has a fairly fatalistic attitude towards it. He knows that he is on the downhill stretch here anyway, so why let a virus interfere with living? JMO.

Still working from home here believe it or not - and with the company being sold to a new owner 2 years ago and the lease on the FL office ending next year it's unlikely I'll be going back to the old office.

Then there is of course the strong possibility we will move to ND later on this year.

Finally - and this is a bit of surprise to me insofar as COVID-19 is concerned - there are an awful lot of people from out of state in FL in June. Highly unusual. Especially NY. I don't know what the story is on that...

Sarasota County here... and i'd say MAYBE 25% are wearing masks. Everything is 'back to normal' for most people, i guess. But then our Gov. goes on everyday to say we are just fine here in FL. Little denial going on there IMO

Concern rises around NBA with Florida virus spike

“The surging number of coronavirus cases in Florida, which posted a record high Saturday for the third consecutive day, has raised concerns in many corners of the NBA, from players to team executives to the league office itself, as it prepares to resume play in Orlando next month.

Florida added 4,049 new cases Saturday, which broke the previous single-day record of 3,822 set Friday. In all, the state has set records for single-day cases in seven of the past 10 days and is approaching 94,000 infections -- becoming a national hot spot along with Texas and Arizona, states that are also seeing surging case numbers.”

“Florida reported more than 4,000 new coronavirus cases on Saturday – the largest single-day spike the state has seen since the beginning of the pandemic. It's the third consecutive day Florida announced a record number of new coronavirus cases.“

The changing face of coronavirus in Florida: Younger victims, and what that means

“The median age for coronavirusvictims went from 65 at the beginning of March to 36 this week, according to the Florida Department of Health.“

[...]

““I think our older populations are taking more precautions, protecting themselves a little bit more,” said Cindy Prins, associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Florida. “And I think that our younger populations have moved back into the community as these stay-at-home orders have been lifted. They’re more likely to be going out, socializing and getting exposed to the virus. We’re seeing the younger population getting exposed and less of the older folks getting exposed.”“

“DeSantis said the median age of people who tested positive in Florida over the past week was 37. He said it had been in the 60s closer to when testing began.

"It's gonna continue to go down based on what we've seen," DeSantis said.“

DeSantis: ‘Vast majority’ of Florida’s new COVID-19 cases are asymptomatic young people

““We’re seeing it spread in 20- and 30-year-olds faster than we would like to see, so we really want to send a message of doubling down on what we’ve been preaching since the start ... in terms of social distancing” and other public-health guidelines, DeSantis said.“

Excess Deaths Associated with COVID-19

Not exactly what I have been looking for, but this does show exactly what I have suspected. The death rate in Florida, based on "data reported", doesn't really show any excess death rates.

How can this be correct? Now, look at the small print, the lag time in reporting is based on state releasing information.

I have been trying to find just aggregate death data for Miami Dade county, which shouldn't be hard to find...

Am I crazy? o_O

We used to live in Coral Gables. Anyhow, I tried finding this out and ended up on some graph about infant mortality.

It is impossible to find the information. I have been trying since March.

It should be fairly simple information to find.

One more time that hitting "Like" does NOT feel sufficient to expressing the emotions that these reports elicit. We need a "Grim" or "Sad" as a choice. IMHO of course.
