KATEB! Get out of my head! A one ounce Krugerrand has a current value of $1200...5 stacks=$60,000.... people who live "month-to-month" per MS's police interiview, seldom have thousands of dollars in gold coins squirreled away....hmmm.

I don't think they're one ounce... They're not in scale with what is likely the 1 oz silver coins and if they were tubes of 10, it'd be more than 40K and we'd have heard about it. IMO. Half-oz, quarter oz? one-tenth? who has a slide rule?

al66pine – Thanks for finding that. So, some property is exempt from IRS seizure, like certain annuity and pension benefits. And, there are limitations on IRS’s seizure of a primary residence.

MS likely has all of the IRA funds in his possession. But, if he deposited the IRA money in a bank account, then IRS might seize the bank account.

Something else interesting I read at the IRS link you posted is about Innocent Spouse Relief. It seems that MS could perhaps request this relief for the IRS Tax Lien for the 2013 Form 1040 taxes.

Yes KateB What we CAN SEE could be of smaller weight (1/4 oz or 1/2oz)...there are a lot of item in containers of which we can not see the contents. (Nuggets, gems, gold dust?) What ever it is, it was of value to him.
I went to the store for a little bit and thought about this.....Why, in a million years would you tell someone to "leave the alarm off, I don't want to pay for a false alarm" even though I have tens of thousands of dollars of CASH, GOLD COINS and guns in my home...And my precious wife, the sole bread winner of our household, the one with whom I am trying to rekindle my relationship with, is flying home alone, late at night and will be entering the property???? So, even if I were to rule out the "burner phone issues" ....I still think this looks like a "set up" for his wife to be killed.

Not sure which pix (or Bates #) posters are referring to & I don't have eagle eyes (cannot tell from LE's pix what size K'rands/other gold coins were in safes) but thought the following info could help some sleuthers here figure out what coins & which sizes are in the pix. And thus the ~ mkt value of safe contents, and to compare that to what MS told LE early on.

Good morning, KateB. They are much smaller than VHS tapes. They're mini video tapes. I see DV on them. Thinking that stands for digital video. Probably the format that replaced Hi-8 tapes.

Who on earth leaves the alarm unarmed or off when leaving for extended time especially when they've got all that cash there? It would have been funny, sort of, if someone had broken in that evening knowing they were going to be gone at least overnight. We arm it always and don't have anywhere near that amount.

ITA. And also, the amount for each withdrawal. Maybe this kind of activity caught the attention of the IRS and/or fraud specialists within the bank.

Very curious though. One would think having cash in the bank is not only safer but better if you are, for ex., looking to rent/buy another office space or any other high ticket item that will likely require account balance verification. What would MS say, come on over and look at my $40k in cash?

Perhaps it was part of MS plan... getting financially ready for his wife's demise? Enough cash to have on hand to get him through until the LI checks stated rolling in? I'm sure LE knows exactly when that money was withdrawn.
