Thanks. Our oven is not working right or we would probably be doing roast beef. I don’t do turkey anymore. But fortunately we all love beef stew and I have always cooked it on the stovetop.

I haven't made beef stew yet this season but will try to make it in the slow cooker. Do you make dumplings to go with your beef stew? When my mom made beef stew, the dumplings on top were my favorite part of the meal.

I'm looking forward to roasting prime rib on NYE. My brothers are coming for dinner, and we'll watch the Michigan game. I like having the beef rib bones and leftover meat for Mushroom Barley Soup.

Prime rib would be lovely! And the soup too.

I’m up here in Utah having a blast freezing my arse off! Donna taught me to make a pot roast like her mother made. It has red wine and beef broth in it. The vegs she added were carrots, onion, red potatoes, turnip, leeks. She took cheese cloth and wrapped it around bunches of fresh herbs then tied it with string. She baked it in the huge ceramic crock for hours. It was delicious.

She bought a Costco rotisserie chicken. I’d always read about how good they were. Tonight we had chicken Cesar salad with butter lettuce? instead of romaine. Fresh Parmesan. No croutons which we agree on. It was great. I deboned the bird so she can make soup.

DH and I agree that Costco has the best rotisserie chicken. Always meaty and doesn't have an artificial taste like the rotisserie chickens at Kroger or Meijer. Even Nino's isn't as good as Costco.

Thanks for sharing the pot roast pix. Glad you're having a good time in Utah.

Good to hear you are enjoying Utah and eating well, even if you are freezing!

I can smell the pot roast from here! That is just how my mom made it :)

We had freezing rain last night, the roads are a sheet of ice. I am so glad we have the house stocked up. Going to pull something out of the freezer for supper.

Stay warm peeps!

Stay safe on those icy roads. We're expecting a wintry mix today with snow showers changing to rain for the holiday weekend. There is still some snow left after a snowfall last week, but rain will likely wash it away.

DH went out for a couple of short errands before we both head to Nino's. We're going to have fun :D

These French Fancies arrived today from a famous tea room in Yorkshire. They taste really good.

My uncle showed me how to make scalloped potatoes. He had this slicer gadget and he gave it to me! He wants a different one. I’m excited to be able to make slices, 3 different thicknesses, depending on the guide panel you use. The other two guide panels are julienne or French fries.

He puts onions in his recipe. Sometimes he cooks chunks of sausage and adds that too. I would reduce the quantity of onions and add chopped garlic. They were very good!
I used to have a Pampered Chef Mandolin that looked similar to that, I used it for over ten years but then it broke. It had a lifetime guarantee and Pampered Chef replaced it with an updated model that doesn’t work nearly as well as the old one. Sigh. I usually just slice them by hand now.

Yes they're clever tho. Mini Victoria sandwiches, with buttercream on top and covered in a mild marzipan, then the icing.

DH and I loved Betty's Tea Room in Yorkshire (original shop). Afternoon tea was amazing!

We went to 3 quilt shops & to lunch today at Bohemian Brewery in Sandy, UT. It served German and Czech foods. It was very good!

I had a bacon cheeseburger and my cousin had a black bean burger. She ended up not eating it because it had bell peppers in it. She can’t eat them and didn’t realize it had them in it. The garlic fries and onion rings were yummy!

They we’re very busy and we sat in the bar area. The bartender served us and she was a gem!

I've eaten there many times. Their garlic fries are indeed very good!

That food looks really good to me! My husband can't eat bell peppers either--they make him burp a lot and the taste now makes him feel sick.

Tonight we had the steamed fruit dumpling dessert that we brought home from Bohemian Brewery. It had a cinnamon sauce, a vanilla sauce and strawberries in separate little containers. I didn’t like the cinnamon sauce. The vanilla sauce tasted like icing. The strawberries didn’t appeal to me. The fruit inside the dumpling was blueberries.

Overall we weren’t impressed. Maybe they would have been better if we ate them fresh.

Merry Christmas! DH and I enjoyed our dinner at Picano's. The restaurant was busy with holiday parties in the various banquet rooms, but we were seated at a cozy booth in the main dining room where it was relatively quiet. Even though one of my favorites - Veal Morel - was a featured special, I opted for pickerel with ammoglio sauce. The white lake fish is lightly breaded and sauteed. Since pickerel is very mild, the garlicky ammoglio is a perfect accompaniment. DH had Veal Mama Assunta, and we shared tiramisu for dessert. We started our meal with a lovely bottle of Amarone.

We were home in time for Jeopardy! and watched the 1984 version of A Christmas Carol starring George C. Scott. We recorded It's a Wonderful Life and will watch it sometime soon.

Here's the recipe that I follow for Cioppino: Cioppino Recipe | Giada De Laurentiis | Food Network
