HongKongPhooey and RusselSprout,

Thank you for your reply.

That is a fancy name for a bacon sandwich on a specialty bun. I have to admit the name caught my attention.

My DH and I have bacon rolls (bacon sandwiches) on toast or bread with tomato and mayonnais. We sometimes have them for lunch or an easy dinner.

Now I am craving bacon!

Thanks again ( as I walk to the refrigerator).
We call them BLT's - bacon, lettuce, and tomato. So yummy, especially right now, with home grown tomatoes coming on!

You guys are making me hungry……. at 2 AM ! Lol
Just to chime in, we like bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches with avocado, or sometimes guacamole on them. Those buns have caught my interest . We always just use toasted wheat bread.

Your tacos look good too @PayrollNerd . I can eat tacos any time, but usually make them every other week or so. I use the Fiesta Taco seasoning and add a little extra Cumin . We like spicy, lol.

Geez, I’ve gotta get away from this food thread before I start chowing down on something! :D

If it’s any consolation, I’m starting a low carb diet today so no more bacon rolls for me either.

Tonight we are having steak and green beans grown by me. With the drought causing a hosepipe ban here this week it's going to be tricky keeping my garden watered so I picked as many as I could!
Steak and Home grown green beans, yum! I stir fried some green beans with onions in a little garlic olive oil a couple of days ago. They weren’t home grown, but turned out good.
We have been on watering restrictions lately, but recently got almost 5 inches of rain so maybe we’re back to normal here. Hope you can keep your garden watered!

We have California BLTs - add avocado slices - once a week during most of the summer, especially during Michigan tomato season. We like trying different types of bread or rolls for the sandwiches. BLTs are summer comfort food :)

We make sandwiches with lettuce, tomato, avocado, and mayonnaise. Especially good now when we have fresh tomatoes from the garden.

Often we use a good homemade sourdough bread but lately we have a new favorite bread from a local bakery. Every day they bake a special bread, and on Thursdays their bread of the day is Jalapeño Corn Polenta loaf. It makes the best avocado lettuce tomato sandwiches, and also excellent grilled cheese.

I made a pot of soup yesterday but its not the best. I needed to get stock cubes but just nipped round to the corner shop, and i always have to check the dates on things there, as ive been caught out a few times. And low and behold i pick up the ham stock cubes, and they were out of date, only by a month, i thought, uch, theyll be ok. But it really wasnt the best pot of soup, so im blaming the stock cubes :-) It red lentil with lots of carrot and leeks, and finished with parsley. It did actually taste better today than yesterday, as is often the case with soup. But it wasnt amazing.

It has been kind of quiet on this thread so I thought I would share my Labor Day plans with everyone and hopefully you all will share your plans as well.

We will have a two day celebration at our family campground with a lot of family and Friends (probably 100 people) visiting during the two day celebration.

Saturday we will visit and reconnect with each other because it has been a year since some of us have seen one another. The men will fry fish to go along all the wonderful covered dishes and deserts. Then we will sit around the campfire and tell old funny stories.

Sunday will continue with breakfast for those that brought campers or tents to stay all night. Usually a breakfast casserole.

In the late morning, some will take their boats on the river and offer boat rides to anyone who wishes to take a ride. It is so peaceful and calming on the river. Then it will be time to start the BBQ grills. I believe we are having chicken and bbq pork. We will eat the leftover casseroles from the fish fry and make more if we need to. We have a full size enclosed kitchen with fridge microwave stove. Anyway, after that meal is done the games begin. Horseshoes, cornhole, we hit gulf balls across the river (if you can hit it that far), a frisbee game and euchre.
Monday we all pick up the camp and go home for a day of rest.

This is an event my parents (they are both in heaven now) started 25 plus years ago. So in their honor I release two balloons every year just before we eat fish!

Sorry for the ramble.

Everyone one please have a safe and happy Labor Day!

No big Labor Day plans here. My oldest is coming to visit so that will be nice. She wants to go to the Farmers Market in Lakewood Ranch on Sunday. It's a really nice one too and I can ride Birdie, my trike.

The stitches are out of my foot and it is feeling better. I also had a gel shot in my right knee so I am hoping I can stay out of pain for a bit. LOL!

I haven't done much cooking due to recovery. I found chicken nuggets at Publix that weren't frozen. It was 3 meals worth for less than $5.00. I found mashed potatoes in 4 little containers that were less than $5.00 too. They were just a few pennies more than buying a container of mashed potatoes. I can never finish the big dish so the small containers are perfect.

Now I'm prepping to go out of town for 2 weeks so I'm trying to eat up things in the freezer. I still have one dish of the zucchini lasagna and I'm going to thaw it for this weekend. My daughter that eats meat will like it because it has ground turkey.

I've been doing a deep clean of the kitchen the past few days. I ran the self clean oven feature and I'm waiting for it to cool down and unlock itself. All that is left is wiping down the cabinets. I don't always notice the splatters timely.

I've never been much of an outdoors girl and have never been camping, but this gathering sounds amazing! Family, friends, food, fun - perfect for the holiday weekend that marks the unofficial end of the summer. Love the nod to your parents who started the annual tradition and the ceremonial balloon release that brought tears to my eyes. Have a safe and wonderful weekend :)

Glad that you are recovering from the foot surgery and that an injection will help your knee. Bursitis in my right hip has reemerged, so I'm seeing an orthopedist on Friday. I did 12 physical therapy sessions in 2020, but the inflammation seems to have returned. My PCP thinks I might benefit from a cortisone injection.

We don't have any major plans for the holiday weekend as we avoid traveling on busy Michigan highways when many folks head up north. Some schools are already back in session, but the majority of students return to class following Labor Day weekend. We will probably go to Picano's on Sunday to find out how our new favorite waitress did on her OT certification exam. If my brothers want to come for dinner on Monday, we'll probably have NY strip steaks that are featured at Nino's this week, pasta salad, Michigan corn and tomatoes, chocolate cake.

Enjoy your trip to the Farmer's Market. Looks cool!

@PayrollNerd I wish i had a self cleaning oven!! Or a self cleaning anything for that matter :-)
@kalvis your celebration weekend sounds awesome!

I bought a basil plant when i was making the tomato and marscapone pasta dish, and its really doing great, and i need to start using the basil now, its really in full bloom. Its found another pasta recipe, hey i crave stodge at the weekend, but it looks simple to make -

It uses soft cheese rather than make a bechamel. Macaroni cheese is one of my all time favs but its a bit of a pain making it and uses so many pots and pans! Ive got a feeling i might think....this would have been better if i made a bechamel. But hey I will give this recipe a try and if it saves time and mess, it might be a winner!

I love basil but don't have much success keeping the potted plants alive  I had a lot of fresh parsley that I wanted to use up, so I got a package of fresh basil and mixed the greens for pesto. Really simple to make with few ingredients: basil and/or other fresh greens, walnuts or pine nuts, fresh garlic, fresh parmesan cheese, salt and pepper, extra virgin olive oil. Put ingredients (except olive oil) into food processor and pulse until ingredients are thoroughly chopped. Drizzle in olive oil until mixture is smooth. Store in tightly covered jar or container. Drizzle olive oil on top if you will store the pesto for more than a few days. Stir into cooked pasta for a main course or spread on a baguette or crostini for a quick appetizer. Delicious!

I've had this basil plant for a good few weeks now, and pesto was mentioned here a while back and I was planning on making a pesto but I couldn't quite find a recipe I was confident would be good! Yours sounds full of flavour! Nuts yes! And garlic yes! I must try make this dish.

But the basil plant may have to sit for another wee while, I was having family round tonight for dinner and I made my legendary steak and haggis pie, but two people couldn't make it, and I've got half a BIG steak pie left over, so I figure I'll be eating my pie all weekend, not that I'm complaining :)

DH and I stopped at Nino's after my appointment with the orthopedist. I got a cortisone injection for trochanteric bursitis in my right hip. I will start doing the exercises and stretches that I learned in physical therapy again so the inflammation in the bursa eases.

I planned to make Succotash sometime this weekend to go with swordfish. My mom used to make the veggie dish in the fall with fresh corn, tomatoes, and peppers from my dad's garden. She added lima beans that were nowhere to be found at Nino's. There weren't even canned lima beans, so DH stopped at Kroger after his afternoon swim. Nino's also did not have frozen okra which I sometimes add to my succotash. Fresh okra isn't common around here and is difficult to find. I didn't tell DH to get frozen okra, but he said Kroger had it along with the lima beans. My succotash will have fresh Michigan corn, Michigan grape tomatoes, scallions, and lima beans. Mom used to include green peppper, but I'm not crazy about it in this dish. I season with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, a little chopped garlic, and a pinch of red pepper flakes. Succotash is a wonderful accompaniment to most meats, poultry, and fish.

We're doing California BLTs on pretzel rolls tonight. Swordfish with Succotash tomorrow, dinner out on Sunday. Not sure about the holiday, but we got several NY strip steaks in case my brothers don't make other plans.

Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend.

I haven’t heard of Succotash, I like the sound of it.

I believe we call lima beans butter beans. Not ever so common here in terms of usage but you can buy them canned.
