Last Sunday we went to Mexican Village for a change but had a lovely dinner on Friday at our favorite Picano's. I ordered a special - Portobello Mushroom Ravioli. The delicious pillows sat in a Marsala sauce and were topped with sliced Portobellos and sundried tomatoes. The dish was heavenly, and I enjoyed the leftovers yesterday. We made reservations for Thanksgiving with our niece, her boyfriend, and their little one. I just don't feel up to cooking Thanksgiving dinner this year. Here's Picano's Thanksgiving menu: Thanksgiving Menu

Last week I made turkey meatloaf with fresh spinach, sundried tomatoes, and goat cheese. This is my favorite go-to recipe for ground turkey; it makes great meatballs, too. We had cold meatloaf sandwiches the next day, and DH finished the rest with leftover roasted potatoes yesterday. Our refrigerator is bare; we'll need a major trip to Nino's this week. Tonight we're having sockeye salmon with Brussels sprouts.

We had an unseasonably warm fall but are now experiencing more normal chilly temperatures. We had a rain/snow mix for a few hours yesterday and could actually see measurable snow this week. My royal purple mum on the front porch still looks lovely, but we will get our holiday greens next weekend. Our fall cleanup crew came early Wednesday, and the guy who cleans our gutters came that afternoon. DH took down the windchimes, hauled the grill around to the garage, and put up the storm door in the kitchen (French doors to deck/patio/backyard). We're ready for winter :)

Out of curiosity, how do you cook your sprouts?

In the grand tradition of those of English extraction, had them boiled to the point of grayness and mush inflicted on me as a child, but as an adult, I discovered roasting them, I think by seeing it done on a cooking show on tv. I also like them raw in salads. Tuscan kale, or cabbage, too. I know they're too bitter raw for some folks, but I like it.

I always roast Brussels sprouts. Depending on their size, I leave them whole or cut in half after cutting off the stems and peeling off outside leaves. Sprinkle the sprouts with olive oil, salt, pepper, and shredded Parmesan cheese. For festive occasions, I'll add dried cranberries, pomegranate seeds, chopped nuts, and drizzle with balsamic vinegar.

I tend to halve them and roast them cut side down for at least part of the time, so the cut edge caramelises. Olive oil, salt, pepper, normally, and sometimes white pepper, rather than black. Sometimes I'll dust them with stock powder rather than salt. I tend to eat them with tomato sauce, or sometimes, the hottest Nandos sauce you can buy, which I don't know if I can name without setting off the swear filter (google it).

Brussels Sprouts: cook a slice or 2 of bacon in a saute pan

Remove crispy bacon to paper towels/drain

Saute halved Brussels sprouts in bacon drippings

Crumble bacon over sprouts in serving dish

Those who claim to dislike Brussels sprouts will eat these

Oh, ick. I wouldn't want to eat those either. I never liked brussel sprouts until my Uncle John made them for me. Now when I go visit him, he always makes them. Here is what I wrote down as a I watched him make them.

Thanks for the bacon suggestion :) We have several slices of bacon, so I can do this preparation for dinner tonight. I've been thinking about Ratatouille for a while and asked DH to stop at Nino's after his swim. Ratatouille on tomorrow's menu with shaved Parmesan and a crusty loaf of French bread.

We took my parents for lunch in a country pub today. They had roast pork with crackling and apple sauce, I had roast beef with horseradish and yorkshires. Mr HKP had fish and chips (!) They had crumble and custard for dessert, I had dark cherry brownie with ice cream. Other than the brownie, we were soooooo English :p It feel so nice to be doing things with them again.

Here is the fancy Brussels sprouts recipe that I have used for special occasions. It's always a winner :)

At the food pick up Saturday I was surprised to see gluten free kielbasa. That will make a nice appetizer for Thanksgiving.

I was shocked to see Twinkies. I had no idea they still made them, much less know anyone over the age of 5 who would even eat them. LOL!

I'm not a fan of chicken wings but chicken soup sounds really good. I need to pick up a few carrots for it. It's going to be upper 60s during the day later this week. That is cool for us.

I need to find a home for the pimento cheese. That stuff turns my stomach.

I tried the cereal and was expecting the strawberries to be sweet and hard. They were chewy and had zero flavor. The cereal was good but then I have always liked Special K.

I am a hard-core cheese lover and a Southern gal as well, but I cannot abide pimento cheese in any form or fashion. Just the smell of that or blue cheese makes me feel like puking.

Another southern girl here that dislikes pimento cheese.

Why did Twinkies go out of business?

Image result for twinkies- bimbo bakeries?

Narrator: But two bankruptcies, heavy debt loads, and changing tastes pushed Twinkies off shelves and almost to their death. Andy Jhawar: People were starting to sell boxes of Twinkies on eBay for $1,000 a pop.Apr 6, 2021

[never liked Twinkies, even as a child- they are not chocolate, so what is the point? however, when they were going to never be around again, I did get curious and when they re-emerged, I bought one package- and I still did not like them. :( ]

I never liked Twinkies either. As you said, they are not chocolate, so what's the point?!

Side effect of steroids means you sleep very little, eat too much, and make sausage gravy & biscuits before the sun even thinks about coming up. You serve it with a side of poison that keeps you above the dirt, while looking at your binder clip clamped together broken computer.

So how’s your morning??? LOL!!!

I'm eating cold pizza I ordered delivered yesterday after I found out a friend had died and couldn't face cooking.

So, it's going about how you'd expect.

At least the pizza was good.

What on earth happened to your computer that meant you had to clip it?

Oh gosh that’s devastating. You deserve that pizza!! I’m sorry. I will hold you in my heart and sending you a virtual (((hug))).

No idea what caused the hinge to fail. I bought this Dell Inspiron in late 2017 so it’s old but a decent computer. Online videos to replace the hinge are above my skill set. I’m not the only one that’s had this hinge fail tho. I’ll call the repair shop and see when I can drop it off.

Now to go water the garden and harvest some Buttercrunch lettuce & romaine. It helps my soul & keeps me sane.

I had hinge failure on my last laptop, something happened with them where when I opened and shut the computer, it literally started peeling the backplate off the monitor half, so you could see all the innards. Badly made, I expect. It was cheap. My current one is a little long in the tooth but it's a secondhand Elitebook with metal casing that weighs about the same as a small car. I got my brother who works in IT to source it, and we paid far less than it was worth. Seller didn't know what they had. It should do me for the forseeable future, but I have to rest it on a stand rather than myself. When I started on Websleuths the other month, and I was using it a lot, I was lying on the sofa, resting it against my ribs or stomach and raised knees. Until, about a week in, I noticed in the mirror when I went for a bath a linear bruise straight across my ribcage, where I'd been resting it. This sucker is HEAVY. But the hinges work great. :D

Twinkies are a snack that I loved as a child, but after childhood I thought they tasted like a sponge full of artificial flavors.
