Yum! Just had a great soup by DH starting with won ton base. From the chinese restaurant, he bought the base. On the side, they gave him a bit of chopped fresh cilantro.

He made a broth by sautéing simple white mushrooms in butter and a little won ton base. He seasoned it primarily with a tiny bit of Tabasco sauce. (In the end, the soup tasted a little peppery, not hot.) meanwhile, he defrosted frozen whole shrimp.

When the mushrooms fully flavored their own broth, and the shrimp were not frozen, he further heated the wonton base separately, so it was really hot. He added it to the mushrooms, then flash cooked the shrimp in the broth. Top with a bit of cilantro.

A week ago I started the honey-cranberry ferment. I tasted one of the berries today and I definitely notice a change. It is not eye-squinting tart like a raw cranberry would be, but I will let it go further. I'm thinking we'll have a taste test on Thanksgiving between the honey ferment and regular cranberry sauce I make from berries and sugar water on the stove.

I am looking forward to the test results.

Todays food pickup had a few odd things. Like seriously, who feeds this sugary gel to their kids?

Warm cooked pudding will be a nice before bed treat. Great looking bananas. I could slice those on top of the pudding.

Never heard of par boiled rice before. I think those drumsticks would be good for the crockpot with a bottle of BBQ sauce.

That pumpkin bread loaf has ginger but no barley or rye! Kiddo will enjoy that but I’m allergic to ginger. We love ciabatta rolls to make breakfast sandwiches with.

That glitter stuff could be a good garnish for vegetables, for kids who respond to things like that.

add vinegar, and it's probably a nutritional = to ketchup.

Come to think of it, it's probably good to mix with ketchup to serve on the side, a purple, glittery, magical dip for preschoolers and early elementary kids.

Otherwise, ewwwww.

MOO

Edited to add: I wouldn't be above telling the brats that it is magic, and if they say specific words, (insert age-appropriate and child's goal-related affirmation here) and eat all their magic dip broccolli, a wish will come true. "With this purple powered vegetable, every word on the spelling test shall be easy!"

I'm glad that you are feeling better and were able to go to your food pickup. It saddens me to read about all your - and your girls - food allergies. I've had allergy testing three times - most recently in early 2022 - but results never indicate any food allergies. That said, I am allergic to mold which makes anything briny pretty much off limits. Pickles, vinegar- based salad dressings or marinades, some types of olives, foods with lots of preservatives, etc. cause watery eyes, runny nose, itchy throat, and/or I cough and gag and need to use my rescue inhaler. I'm also lactose intolerant and avoid most dairy products because I never know how much I can tolerate without having digestive distress. Small amounts of some hard cheeses are alright, along with Greek yogurt, but milk, butter, cream, and most soft cheeses don't sit well with me.

Wait, what now? There is a briny food mold allergy connection?

I'm mildly allergic to a lot of things, including mold.

...Also, avoid foods that are more likely to contain mold or other fungi, such as mushrooms and yeast. Common culprits include:

  • Cheese
  • Mushrooms
  • Vinegar and foods containing vinegar, such as salad dressing, ketchup, and pickles
  • Sour cream, sour milk, and buttermilk
  • Meat or fish
  • Breads and other food made with yeast
  • Jarred jams and jellies
  • Sauerkraut
  • Pickled and smoked meats and fish
  • Dried fruits such as dates, prunes, figs, and raisins
  • Soy sauce
  • Hot dogs, sausages
  • Canned juices
  • Leftovers that are more than 3 or 4 days old

The surgery gel looks disgusting. Probably full of sugar, artificial colors and flavors. Can’t imagine feeding it to children but that is JMO.

I was curious about surgery gel so I looked it up to find the ingredients. Spoiler: it doesn’t contain any raspberries.

Everything else looks great. I love ciabatta rolls too.

Umm, aside from the leftovers, yeast breads, canned juice and soy sauce, I eat all those things!,

if tamari counts, I eat that, too. Soy sauce is not gluten free.

yikes!,,

I found gluten free soy sauce for my girls. Right after kiddo was diagnosed, she was so sad to not have homemade fried rice. So I was on a mission! Now I can make it for her. Happy girls!

I don't have to avoid every "moldy" food on that list because most don't cause allergic reactions. I mostly avoid foods that are "briny" because those do cause allergy symptoms.

Bragg's Liquid Aminos is gluten-free, but does contain soy for those who can't have soy.

Here's a link to the amazon listing where you can read ingredients:

My daughter and all her friends use Bragg’s Liquid Aminos. I had never heard of liquid aminos before and thought it sounded like a science experiment. Since we have been using it instead of soy sauce I have found it to be milder and not as salty as soy sauce.

I agree - the name liquid aminos is sort of strange. We just call it Braggs. I use it on many dishes, not just as a soy sauce. It's really good on rice and beans.

We use it in soup and quite a few other things. Lots of rice dishes.

To add to the mold list - any bottle of wine with a natural cork. I've had a couple of bad reactions.

Tamari is gluten free. It's all soy soy sauce, no wheat.
