Doing some intense household budgeting action, so we made ramen, and it was SOooo budget-friendly, and plus, we love it. So made the broth simmering overnight, a real concoction. Used powdered beef bouillon, buncha spices. Fivespice. S&P, of course. Soy sauce, mirin, rice vinegar, malt vinegar, oyster sauce (love the stuff). Red pep flakes, cilantro, onion powder, raw garlic/two cloves. Sesame oil. Ground mustard, clove, ground ginger, raw ginger, nutmeg. Touch of brown sugar. Lemongrass. If I'd had bones, I'd have roasted them down, but no bones. This worked, though, it tasted really good. So when ready, boiled the noodles separately, and I was able to get some really thin pork tenderloin on sale, so seared that along with frying up some cabbage in sesame oil w/s&p, got the pork pretty much heated through. Popped it in the oven, put the fried cabbage and noodles (not fully cooked yet) in the broth and reheated the broth. Got bowls, sliced up the pork pretty fine and small, into the bowl, got noodles only from the broth, got those on top of the pork. Then poured on some broth. Then, topped with raw cabbage, raw scallion, raw jalapeno slices, sesame seeds, cilantro. That came out well, and was NOT that expensive, so happy w/that. Woulda been better with an egg, will try for that in the next batch because I still have broth.

I never had fried cabbage before. Read about it, I guess it's big in the South. Am now going to make it all the time because it was awesome.

There used to be a lady in our community named Vera Bradley. She was old school southern and wouldn’t share her recipe, but she made the best fried cabbage. And she’d make it and give it to you. It was sliced into fine slivers. She added finely slivered onion and red and green peppers(the hot kind). Salt and pepper and a pinch of sugar. That stuff was soooo good! I make a copycat of it and call it Vera Bradley cabbage.

That sounds delicious! We had pork tenderloin for dinner. I planned to make fried rice with the leftovers, but I may make your raman instead!

Did anybody ever have a Nicky's hot dog in Chicago? I'm pretty sure they just have slivered onion (maybe relish) and a pickle spear, checking. I can't get the menu for the one I used to go to. I can't remember if they had relish, but they were good.

Are Vienna beefs worth the price? They're so expensive.
Viennas are definitely worth the price!

Yellow mustard, short peppers, kosher pickles, green relish, slivered onions, tomatoes and don't forget the celery salt.
Served on a steamed poppy seed bun.

Now I'm craving one!

I got one package before, honestly, maybe I've got a wack palate, they tasted largely the same as other dogs to me. Maybe I didn't prep them properly, though, do you simmer in boiling water? Would indoor lil folding grill be better?

I load mine up with so much stuff that possibly the sport peps dull my palate on them a bit. I should try one plain, maybe, with just like a lil mustard.

You can drop them into boiling water and cook, they will float to the top when they are done. Don’t overcook them, remove them from boiling water as soon as they float to the top.

Alternatively you can steam them in a steamer basket over boiling water.

Like I mentioned in another post, my dad always simmered them in beer or steamed them above simmering beer.

I’m sure you could grill them too.

I'm gonna try another pack, honestly. I never get really good buns, either, maybe I'll get some poppyseed (which I know can make a difference). I haven't gotten a pack of those Viennas in ages and ages.

I prefer any type of grill over boiling, but the famous vendors just boil them. Good tip from @IceIce9, simmer them until they float to the top.

Just remember, never put ketchup on a hot dog, ever!

I only put mustard on a hotdog. I prefer them grilled. However, now that I’m alone, I pop them in the microwave. It’s not my favorite but I’m not grilling in 100 + deg weather!

One way to cook them in the microwave is to use a large bowl half full of water, heat in microwave until it is boiling. Carefully remove the bowl from the microwave. Then drop one or two hot dogs into the boiling water and let them cook.

By cooking them in the boiling water they plump up but don’t become overcooked.

Tonight we had a special meal for Kiddo to send her back to vet school tomorrow. Two of our close friends came over. I cooked the meal before they arrived and then we did safe distancing by eating in the living room.

My oldest sent me this recipe with spaghetti squash. Kiddo and I are not big fans. However my oldest made this dish for Christmas Eve so Kiddo would have a vegetarian dish. She loved it. So tonight was my attempt at making it.

I cannot have pine nuts therefore traditional pesto wasn’t an option. My friend suggested substituting chickpeas. So I smashed about a 1/2 to 3/4 cup of chickpeas with a fork. I added 2 tablespoons of minced garlic, 2 tablespoons of olive oil and snipped a bunch of basil off my plant. That was my “pesto” to coat the tomatoes.

I don’t have red pepper flakes. So I sprinkled paprika, Kosher salt, & black pepper on the squash. When it came out of the oven we sprinkled Parmesan Cheese on them. It was phenomenal. You could not taste the chickpeas at all. We are all spaghetti squash converts now.

I baked Green Goddess Chicken breast. I steamed broccoli. We made individual casserole dishes and blended the chicken and broccoli in with the shredded spaghetti squash. I didn’t put broccoli in mine and Kiddo didn’t put chicken in hers.

In Granada it is expensive for fresh veggies. So Kiddo saved broccoli for her bedtime snack it was so good to her.

Dessert was a Chocolate Cream Pie a favorite of Kiddos. We put a serious dent in that!

They plump up in the microwave too. They just don’t have the grilled flavor. Broiling them makes them plump up too. I am going to set up the grill next week. I have a 3 lb tube of ground beef. I’m going to grill some patties and maybe I should get a pack of hotdogs too. Then I’ll freeze them in baggies so I can take them out and warm them up.

All this hot dog discussion has now made me want a hot dog, even though I've had dozens of them over the past couple months and was convinced I wouldn't have another for weeks, LOL. Checking Vienna beef prices, lol. Yay, ok, these have NOT gone up in price significantly like eggs & other foods. Checking for poppyseed buns... Ok, might go for those, too. Anyone know if I should just get the beef franks or the "jumbo" beef franks??

You’re all making me hungry for a hot dog, and it also brought back the delicious memory of when we were in Vienna. There, we went to the famous Bitzinger Würstelstand. I went with their popular Käsekrainer sausage, which has cheese bits embedded in it. Oh, it was wonderful.

I don't have a favorite Halloween candy but my favorite year round candy are See's Maple Walnuts. Yum!

I definitely prefer the Beef ones, rather than the Jumbo.

I think they're all beef, though. But the jumbo only has four in the pack, they're like really big ones. The regular pack I think has eight. Same price on both. If I'm getting the poppyseed buns, I'm going to go for the standard pack, I think. (I wish I could like try a jumbo, though, lol.)

I didn’t go to the store for hotdogs but I did make myself a burger bar last night.

I have a pound of ground beef left over. I’m going to cook it up and add the chili seasoning. Then I’ll make a pot of chili with light red kidney beans and black beans. I have a half can of chickpeas left too. I may just toss them in there too.

After this rain moves thru, a cool front is coming later this week. Now that the boy quilts are done and ready to ship, I will put in my garden.

Agree about the difference when a hot dog is grilled :)

@Puzzles8 ketchup ruins everything, mustard all the way!
