Food and Recipes while under Coronavirus quarantine #8

I wanted to post this experience, off topic, but I know several members love pets, have rescues, or foster so I thought some might enjoy this. To make this food-related I will say that prime rib makes an appearance in the story.

We still have quite a bit of snow on the ground here, as it has snowed 3 times in the past 2 weeks and been so cold that it hasn’t melted. So there are piles of white snow everywhere.

I went out early in the morning to clear yet another few inches of snow from my driveway, and on top of a pile of snow I thought I saw a small white dog curled up. In my neighborhood many people have dogs and no one lets them run loose. And I know all the neighborhood dogs anyway, and I had definitely never seen this dog before.

When I approached the dog it backed up just out of my reach. I could see a collar and tags so I knew it belonged to someone. We are under an extreme cold warning as temperatures are going to be well below zero for the next several days. So I was determined to catch this small dog.

It acted like it was playing with me, teasing me, letting me get close, but then running out of reach. I’m not kidding when I say it looked like it was smiling, it had a foxy-looking little face and with the mouth open it looked like it was smiling. Or laughing at me.

I grabbed some leftover prime rib out of my refrigerator which was the only thing I had on hand that might appeal to a dog. But it would not come close even for the prime rib.

After trying to catch it for some time I took a break and posted a photo on our neighborhood website. Several people in the neighborhood were willing to help. Everyone was worried about the little dog because of the cold temperatures.

I called our local police department to see if anyone had reported it missing. A very nice officer came over to help try to catch it, and the dog actually let the officer get close but then ran out of reach.

A neighbor notified a lost dog recovery service and the owner of the service came out to set a live catch trap.

Finally the owners became aware and they were able to capture, after it had been running loose all day.

But - it wasn’t a dog at all! It was an Arctic Fox! And belonged to a wildlife educational foundation.

Take a look at the photos of the little cutie.

Wowowow I'm blown away!

Even the officer was duped?! That's wild lol. I've been duped by a coyote before so I empathize. I am a big believer in animal totems and symbolism. I'll just leave this here as it is so very fitting :D

"In various indigenous practices, you’ll find the Arctic fox playing diverse community roles, from wise messenger to cunning trickster. The symbolism variations reflect the complex relationship between humans and this adaptable animal."

We must be in the same jet stream or something because we're getting the same weather. Major drop in temperature and more snow in the next few days. I've made sure I have some essentials on hand so I don't have to go out anywhere.

The officer had a microchip scanner and was trying to get close enough to scan for a microchip! He told me that he had a Siberian husky himself and his husky played the same “catch me if you can game” that this fox was playing. So he thought it was a husky mix or a miniature Eskimo dog mix.

It was so playful! At one point it was rolling over and over in the snow, looked just like a puppy. And of course it was wearing a collar and tags.

We never have snow on the ground for weeks at a time, this weather is very unusual for us. Even if we get a snow of 4” or 6” it usually warms up in a day or two and it melts. But temperatures have been consistently below freezing, and even below zero. And the forecast is for below zero temperatures with wind chill temperatures of -20.

Seems like a really nice and kind hearted police officer!

I can only imagine when you all discovered it was not in fact a dog and the fox was laughing the entire time lol. It even says in the link I posted, they are shape shifters. It's not magic or anything, they really are adept at blending in!

We had a massive snow day a few weeks ago, several feet of snow fell and stayed there! A "high" of -14C tomorrow with more snow. Windchill is no joke, chapped skin and frostbite can be very damaging. A protective layer of Aquaphor is a good idea.

Thanks for letting me know about that thread! Just posted there.

Nice to have happy stories to read.

Forgot to mention that when the police officer came he walked close to the fox and said in a stern voice, “Sit!” and then the fox just smiled at him. Hilarious to watch the officer commanding the fox to sit and the fox laughing.

If there is an animal at home in that weather, the arctic fox is it. Too bad you didn't have a pile of voles in the freezer.

She definitely wasn’t interested in the prime rib I offered her. I even heated it up so it would smell delicious.

When I put it into a dog dish and took it outside my dog looked at me like, “Hey! You never give me prime rib!!”

This speaks volumes. You're an awesome person :)

Ok, so I figured yes, today's the day I finally get my Vienna beefs. The problem: the only store I can get to today has them super overpriced, and i mean like super overpriced, like inflated by about a third of what I can get them for elsewhere. That drives me nuts, I'm like, it's going to have to wait. Sooo, I figured, you know, it's a long time since we had Hebrew National, the price on those at this particular place isn't as inflated. So I got those because I've always really liked them. So was careful on the condiments, made sure the buns weren't mushy (not poppyseed yet), got it all loaded up and watched to make sure the dogs weren't in the water too long, and I didn't even bring it to a complete rolling boil, just short of it. SO good, seriously. Delighted with those. I love cucumber instead of the pickle, but my son hates the cucumber, so he's going to get pickle instead on the rest. And hopefully, Viennas tomorrow or within the next couple days, unless I hot dog myself out all over again before then.

I also bought some voles, so you can send the Arctic fox right on over! Wind chills in the -20s, he'll love it!! LOL.

I’m so glad you enjoyed your Vienna beefs! I know they are expensive. My dad was a hot dog connoisseur, he tried them all, and if he couldn’t get Vienna beefs his next favorite was Hebrew National Kosher Beef Franks. They are more reasonably priced too, and you can get them at Costco in a big package, freeze them, and just take out a few at a time.

I do miss the little Arctic fox, every time I look out on the big pike of snow I remember how she was curled up on top of it. But I’m glad she is safe back at home.

I don’t know who let their cold weather escape from up north. I’d appreciate it if you’d come get it! It does not belong in SWFL!

Imma wimp. Assembled my chili and have it simmering. I remembered the ounce of bitter chocolate this time. Gives it a richness unlike anything else.

I used the 1/2 can of chickpeas I had leftover.

since it has been so cold here I have been "cooking"- mac n cheese n spinach...brown basmati, packaged Indian entree, more spinach. I am so bored....I admire how you are always making something and finding recipes...

In the category of “Now I’ve Seen Everything” Progresso has a new product, Soup Drops.

I heard someone who tried them said they taste like cough drops, only made from soup.

In a world dominated by on-the-go snacks and bite-sized indulgences, Progresso's Soup Drops may just be the ultimate innovation—or perhaps, the pinnacle of convenience culture. This reimagining of the classic comfort food, now transformed into a portable, candy-like format, begs the question: have we taken our love for ease and accessibility to its limit?

Anyone else thinking of that chewing gum from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that tastes like a three course meal?

More snow this week in Florida than in Anchorage!

Or even that meal in pill form that Jane used to serve on The Jetsons!

Can you believe that some people are so busy they can’t open a soup can, pour it in a bowl, and heat in the microwave?

The Jetsons would approve of Soup Drops!

I think it will appeal to those who don't like sweets as much, but still want a snacky treat.

My partner likes sweets, but she is perpetually frustrated that easy gluten free, low FODMAP breakfast options are unrelentingly sweet, not savoury. She's been resorting to either peanut butter or miso paste spread on gluten free toast.
