Food and Recipes while under Coronavirus quarantine #8

Two weeks ago a dozen large regular eggs was $4.99. This week, they were $5.45 and it didn't seem to be any cheaper, per unit price, if you bought an 18 pack or a 30 pack.

I guess the random chicken running the streets around here found its way home. Our county allows 4 chickens. Not that I want chickens, or even need that many eggs. But seriously, maybe it could be a profitable side gig? LOL!

We went to the store to buy eggs yesterday. The 'cheapest' white eggs were $9.99, the most expensive were $14.99.
Needless to say, we will live without eggs this week.

Topic of discussion at the hair salon yesterday:
"For subscriber's only" article addresses the rising cost of eggs due to bird flu. About 1/3 of the Michigan chicken population succumbed to bird flu in the last year or were euthanized. All Michigan eggs will be cage-free in the future.

Are you being affected by high egg prices where you live? $4+ for a dozen eggs in these parts - nothing fancy, just regular eggs. Free-range, extra-large, brown, Eggland's Best, etc. prices higher.
Went to Krogers in Farmington Hills this week - there were hardly any eggs at all. We wound up with cage free- really can't recall the price, probably around 5.00-- I could not believe how few eggs there were- now I understand why

Ouch! That's expensive. Were they gold-plated or something? I got lucky.... my eggs I got at Trader Joe's where the same price as they normally have been. $3.49 a dozen. I wonder what all the local egg farms will start charging when laying season comes around. They've been charging between $6-$8 a dozen as it is. Because they're fresh, I suppose. Should be interesting to see what they do.

Posting from the Enchanted Princess from somewhere in the Caribbean en route to St. Thomas on Saturday. It's pretty bumpy this morning but sea conditions are expected to improve later today. We are going to the International Wine Tasting at noon, but it will actually be only 11:00 because we set clocks ahead an hour last night. We like our table assignment for late seating (7:30). The sommelier has been very attentive since we purchased a wine package. Besides the special wine tasting today, we will also attend the Wine Maker's Dinner on Sunday. This private event with an upcharge is always enjoyable wonderful food and lots of wine :D Later in the cruise, we will enjoy the Ultimate Balcony Dinner on our large balcony (overlooking the wake). We've enjoyed our dinners; food is good to very good, and sandwiches at the International Cafe are amazing. Tonight is a formal night with a special menu that includes beef tenderloin. We told the sommelier which wine we want so it will be ready for us when we are seated. DH is back with my morning banana; he's having a bagel with lox and cream cheese.

I'm dying to hear more on the sandwiches at International Cafe, LOL.

I went to a Kroger today and 18 eggs were $11.49. Much higher than TJs that I was at the other day. With that said... it's still fairly cheap protein.

I like hard boiled eggs on my salad and I bake frequently, and everything I bake uses eggs. My friends who always supplied me with eggs, their chickens have nearly stopped laying. Hopefully they get back to work soon!

Once the weather begins to warm up, their production should gear up again.

Good morning from St. Thomas USVI. We've been here many times, so we'll stay onboard and enjoy the quiet ship. Will probably sit on our balcony and read; if it warms up, we'll go to the adults only Retreat pool.

The International Wine Tasting was really wine experts talk about the various wines and food pairings, this event was interactive with about 30 attendees making their way around to six stations, each featuring a white and red wine from Argentina, Australia, France, Italy, Spain, and USA. Each station offered a two-ounce pour of both wines with most people tasting the whites first. There were marble charcuterie boards with assorted meats, cheeses, fresh and dry fruits, and chocolates to enjoy with the wines. Guests could make their way around to each "country" in their own time, chat with the wine expert, mingle with other passengers. We told our sommelier at dinner how much we enjoyed the interactive format. We didn't particularly like all of the featured wines, but we would recommend the Wine Tasting to others. We will attend an Italian wine tasting later in the cruise. Wines from all over Italy will be presented with appetizer accompaniments.

Dinner last night was excellent. I had a delicious pate appetizer, and the beef tenderloin medallions were perfectly roasted with a lovely mushroom demi-glace. We didn't finish our bottle of wine as we had a lot of wine at the wine tasting :D, so we brought it back to our stateroom. Maybe we'll enjoy a glass on the balcony this afternoon. DH brought me a banana and a bagel for breakfast this morning. Enjoy you day!

The International Cafe is a 24-hour food venue with offerings rotating throughout the day. In the morning, there are breakfast pastries, donuts, yogurt parfaits, mini quiches, and a McMuffin-type egg sandwich. During the afternoon, there is a wide assortment of sandwiches on various types of rolls and croissants. There are also daily soups and salads, cookies, cake slices. In the late afternoon, there are items that one would have for "tea" - dainty sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and preserves, cookies, petit fours. During dinner hours, there are individual pot pies, baby lamb chops, mac & cheese, small portions of dinner entrees, desserts. I've never been to the International Cafe in the overnight hours, but I would assume that there is a wide variety of offerings like there is throughout the day.

I’ve read that chickens need a certain amount of light, and warmth, to lay. I see videos of people adding lights to their chicken coops in the winter. A few videos of clear acrylic panels being installed on the outside frame of the coop. It sounds like it keeps them laying eggs for more months, even if the quantity isn’t as high as before.

I wonder about our ancestors and how they had to survive. I wonder what they did during the cold winters, bring the chickens inside the cabin?

Quoting my post from above with apologies for not making sense. I'm not used to typing on DH's laptop with small keyboard and screen.

I meant to explain that most wine tasting events that we've attended on land or at sea are typically lectures with a wine expert talking about various wines and food pairings. The event that we attended yesterday was a different format and really a lot of fun as guests interacted with wine experts and other passengers.

It's been raining off & on today, so we have to keep coming in from the balcony. Tonight's dinner menu doesn't look particularly exciting, so I'll probably opt for always-available chicken breast or salmon.

I heard it being discussed on a financial segment on the radio news this morning but figured I wasn’t hearing it correctly. Turns out I was, lol.

I’ve heard so many people complain about having to “buy” a cart at Aldi’s (25 cents which is returned to you when you return the cart) that I’m going to guess the pre payment would never go over here.

I went into an Aldis last year and was hand carrying my food, went to the checkout and said, I didn’t have a quarter so I couldn’t use a cart. The cashier stated, always come in and ask us, we’ll give you a quarter.

A cover charge is ridiculous. We’re all going to pay for the price increases regardless.

There is an Aldi’s very near my home, and I often stop in to pick up just a couple items, usually fresh fruit ir vegetables. But I never do major shopping there so I don’t need a cart.

Once I was carrying several items and an employee helpfully advised that I could get a cart in front of the register if I wanted one, she said they always keep several for people who don’t have quarters.
