Had never heard of sugar cream pie, interesting and looked it up. Martha Stewart's recipe is labor intensive, but others are simpler. My mother made custard pie and pudding. I imagine the taste was similar, just no eggs involved.
Outside of Indiana basically no one has ever heard of sugar cream pie. The simplest sugar cream pie recipes with the fewest ingredients are the authentic ones.

My recipe had only a few ingredients, other recipes use cream or half and half instead of milk.
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup butter, cubed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

My mom made the best chicken gravy. I wish I knew her recipe.

She would cut up a chicken and dredge the pieces in a shallow bowl of flour with spices and a little salt mixed in. Then she would fry the chicken in an electric skillet.

As she took the chicken pieces out of the skillet, bits of the chicken stuck to the skillet. After all the chicken was removed she stirred the bit of chicken around and poured in milk and flour, a little salt and pepper. She kept stirring while it thickened.

This gravy was creamy and had a delicious flavor. And I have been unable to replicate it.

This sounds exactly like my mom's fried chicken with creamy gravy. It was absolutely divine, and I have never been able to get it quite right.

My mom never measured anything, but it always came out creamy and delicious.

I had to make a list with what’s cooking where and times and day they can be prepped. Last night I made the cranberry relish, cranberry curd tart and pumpkin cake. Tonight I’ll start the rolls, make the all purpose gravy (uses chicken and beef stock), prep the butternut squash and make the cheese ball. Tomorrow I’ll make the deep fried turkey, the baked ham, mashed potatoes, asparagus with goat cheese and apple sage dried cherry cornbread stuffing. Then I’ll probably collapse.

Your menu sounds delicious :) How many are you feeding? After all the cooking, please take some time for yourself.

Cheese ball caught my eye!

This is the Dried Beef Cheese Ball recipe that our family makes and enjoys for holidays and gatherings. It's a great appetizer and is high in protein. There are a number of versions online and some have grated cheese. We like this version best. When there is a small group of us, we cut the recipe in half.

Dried Beef Cheese Ball
2 pkgs (8 oz) cream cheese, regular or low fat
2 glass jars of Armour Dried Beef (don't use the packages they are watery)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire
1 bunch of scallions, washed, dried and finely diced.
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 box (4 tubes) Ritz crackers

Let cream cheese soften.
Dice one entire jar and 1/2 of the second jar of dried beef slices.
Mix together the cream cheese, diced dried beef, Worcestershire, scallions and garlic powder. Taste to see if you'd like to add more seasonings.
Shape into a ball by placing in a bowl lined with plastic wrap.
On a platter, on the outer edge, lay the remaining whole slices of dried beef in a circle.
Carefully lift the beef ball from the bowl, turn over to lay on the center of the dried beef slices. Pull the dried beef slices up around the beef ball. This keeps it from drying out.
Refrigerate for a few hours.
Serve with Ritz crackers.

That sounds like a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner. How many people will this feast feed? And does anyone help you with the prep and cooking? You must be young. I'd collapse long before that.

You betcha!

So many people think gravy is hard to make, but I've done for years and so so easy.

Take a tupperware and add milk, S&P, flour and shake shake shake shake shake so no lumps. Add/stir in slooooooooooooooooowly on medium heat to drippings and stir stir stir until slow boil and thicken. I have no measurements lol as I just "do it". And yes, can add some corn starch if needed to thicken.

Might be a good use for those "protein shake" tumblers!

I have had one of those protein shake tumblers in my cabinet for at least five years, because I convinced myself I was going to drink a protein shake every day so I bought one. But I tried a protein shake once and didn’t like it, and never used the tumbler again.

This gives me a reason to use my tumbler, yay!

7 total. Friends we see daily at work who are down here without family and my stepson and his girlfriend who we see routinely. This is all me for the cooking. Friends are bringing some other side dishes as well. I think I’m 46 so not so young but not so old. Not sure I’ll be able to get my workouts in tonight or tomorrow though. Would like to ride horse in the AM but probably should clean the house instead. I’m one of those people if I sit still I fall asleep but if I keep moving I’m getting things done.

Well, I'm 30 years older than you, so 46 sounds young. I probably had considerably more energy when I was that age....if only I could recall.

I'm sure everyone will enjoy the dinner!

Dressing non-traditionally in the Crock-pot to make space in the oven.

Pumpkin dessert (no name) resting in the 'fridge, will be maple-glazed at the table.

Turkey breast brining in a cooler in the garage.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Now I'm curious about the pumpkin dessert and the maple glazing. ?? I made a traditional pumpkin pie yesterday and will do the rest of the dinner today.

Happy Thanksgiving, all!
