Recent developments reveal the seizure of a sizeable planter situated near the hamlet's chapel. This planter, described as "a large wooden container" functioned to prevent vehicles from accessing the cemetery adjacent to the religious structure. According to local sources, officers emptied the planter of its soil, which contained a rose bush, and transported it for analysis at the Criminal Research Institute of the National Gendarmerie (IRCGN) in Pontoise. The true motivation for this action remains unclear, but experts hope it will yield new insights.

Lettre, jardinière saisie…nouveaux rebondissements dans l’affaire Émile

“That there is an author, there is almost no longer any doubt”, a source close to the investigation told our colleagues at BFMTV. Almost a year after the discovery of the bones of Emile, who disappeared on July 8, 2023 in Haut-Vernet (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence), the case has a rebound.
On March 13, investigators from the “Émile Cell” seized an “imposing” planter located near the hamlet’s chapel. They also spent much of the evening near the church. The wood bin was emptied of the soil and taken away for analysis.
Human intervention very likely”

If no detention has yet taken place in the context of the case, investigators now have the certainty that a third party will intervene. Did he intentionally or unintentionally harm the child? It is impossible to say at this time. But that there may be a human intervention, that is now very likely.”
In addition, among the hundreds of letters received by the gendarmes, one of them attracted their attention. It would indeed contain disturbing details, which pushed the investigations around Tours and Paris.

Four people have been arrested in the case surrounding the disappearance of French toddler Émile for “intentional manslaughter” and “handling a corpse”, the Aix-en-Provence public prosecutor’s office said in a statement. Émile’s grandparents have also been arrested.”

The other two people arrested are "two of the adult children" of the grandparents, the prosecutor's office said. It is not clear whether it is also Émile's father or mother.”

I'm not shocked, but at the same time I am 😱

I am a bit shocked. Was hoping this child wasn't harmed. But they are still innocent until proven guilty.

Sadly his tiny skull was found a while back, so we already knew he had died. It's the circumstances around that death, going off the charges it seems like there was an accident and the family covered it up...which is what a lot of people on this thread had suggested early on. I hope police can discover the truth.

Here's an article in Le Monde, it's translated into English.
This link contains an interview with the grandparents, see blue link. Also translated into English:

As the arrested grandparents are the maternal ones, the child's father is unlikely to be among the "two adult children" of the grandparents arrested, as mentioned in post #85.

The case of the disappearance of little Émile Soleil, which shocked the whole of France in the summer of 2023, taken a spectacular turn Tuesday, March 25, with the placement in custody police of his two grandparents and two of the boy's uncles and aunts.

"This morning, March 25, 2025, Philippe Vedovini and his wife, grandparents of Émile Soleil, as well as two of their adult children, were taken before on charges of voluntary homicide and concealment of a corpse by investigators from the Marseille gendarmerie research section, said prosecutor Jean-Luc Blanchon in a statement sent to AFP.

I was one of those who thought it might have been an accident that was covered up.
Perhaps a ride on mower or crops being harvested. or hit by a car.

Is the translation correct, though? "Voluntary" homicide?

If it was an actual, unfortunate accident, what did this cover up accomplish? More charges. His poor parents. The betrayal is unfathomable. Family members who probably offered sympathy, "searched" side by side with them, fully aware of what happened, as his parents suffered.

Dreadful.

It could be that some of the translated articles are not correct.
More than one or two seem to say different charges relating to homicide, some say voluntary, some say intentional.

The BFMTV article linked below translates the charge as “intentional homicide”.

But not a French speaker, so take with a grain of salt…

A funeral mass for the toddler was held in February of this year in the presence of several hundreds of mourners.

Within hours of the ceremony, the grandparents published a statement saying "the period of silence must yield to the period of truth", adding: "We need to understand, we need to know".
-.-.-
I'm guessing: they now know.

The French "homicide volontaire" can be translated into English as "willful killing".

Here's what French Wikipedia has about "Volontary homicide", translated into English:
