Respectfully, what I presented (1980's on, anyway) is entirely relevant to what is going on right now. Bush Jr. handed Obama utter disasters on two fronts- imminent economic collapse and the failed state of Iraq with no functioning government or military in place and a whole heck of a lot of extremely radicalized folks in many countries thanks to our war crimes like torture and the illegal bombing of civilian infrastructure, just for starters.

The clock did not start ticking on Obama's watch. It would have been crazy for Obama to listen to warhawk Republicans and to bomb Iran (even Israel's military leaders told us- don't to it!!), and crazy to have boots on the ground awhile
back in support of a small faction of (here we go again) freedom fighters who stood no chance of defeating Assad.

You know what I feel tho, Obama, has just been hit reletlessly Deepwater horizon, mass shootings, , Obamacare, Snowden, N Korea losing its marbles, heads being chopped off ,Greece going bankrupt, government sequesters, post office going banrupt, the bank stuff, China, Putin -- Ebola, MH370, Fersuson and all its implications, immigration, the Isreal bombing stuff (Gaza), Ukraine, ISIS, Sony hack, Hurricane Sandy. MH17,cyber crimes ..its been busy!

I find nothing funny about it. To me, pretty disturbing.
But then again....the view of the Freedom Tower is a constant reminder.

No visual reminders required. I mentioned way upthread that I held a job on 9/11 that allowed me to talk directly to folks from around the world.

The job was with an international nonprofit that became a target very shortly afterwards. Do you remember the anthrax terror? I do. We received a threat that a letter with anthrax had been mailed to us. I was trapped in a section of the building that was closed off with huge heavy plastic sheets, huddled with the Holocaust survivors I worked with and for. We peered out from a window in our center's door and watched a team of responders in hazmat suits going from desk to desk; it took hours, in an increasingly stuffy room with no circulating air....shut off for fear of circulating anthrax spores as well.

Shortly after that I had to get on a plane and fly half way across the country, no choice, for work. I flew out of DC. To get on the plane I had to walk between lines of Army soldiers holding huge guns. Police dogs were everywhere.

I landed, went to a hotel, went out to eat and returned to find the hotel had been evacuated for a bomb threat.

Those were terrifying days. The threat was real, but it was also magnified a thousand times over by fear powerful enough to literally bring the plain vanilla crazies out in full force.

Of course ISIL isn't funny. But I'm way more afraid of getting shot by a druggie in the violent city where I live than by the incredibly remote and bad odds chance of getting blown up by a terrorist.

ISIL doesn't worry me anywhere near as much as the near hysteria that seems to be full throated and more than a passing response to the horrible crimes in Paris.

"This is the beauty who had a penchant for boys and boozing -- then blew herself to bits in the name of ISIS.

Hasna Ait Boulahcen, 26, obliterated herself -- her head and spine flew through a window -- after French anti-terror cops raided the hideout where she holed up with her cousin, Paris massacre mastermind Abdelhamid Abaaoud."

Now, friends and family are trying to reconcile the fun-loving stunner who smoked, drank and partied with the maniac killed Wednesday.

These are the sort of kids to watch for in the near future, imo.
Thinking isis will be watching for them too.

"Born in August 1989, Hasna Ait Boulahcen had a turbulent childhood, part of which she spent in a foster home. Her brother recalls her years in care, from age 8 to 15, as a time when she was "happy and blossomed".

"Initially, everything went well. She was a kid like any other," albeit markedly unaffectionate, her former foster mother told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

But then things took a turn for the worse. The foster mother, who wept when she saw Boulahcen's picture on television, recalled her young charge "applauding in front of the telly" when the Al-Qaeda terror network attacked the US on September 11, 2001.

As time went on the teen became more difficult, prone to angry outbursts and sneaking out at night before leaving her foster home at 15."

TERRORIST RINGLEADER GOT INTO EU AS 'REFUGEE'

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukn...tacks-suspect-slip-through-their-fingers.html

The mastermind of the Paris attacks was able to slip into Europe among Syrian migrants, it emerged last night, as police on the continent admitted they are unable to monitor thousands of suspected jihadists.

EU interior ministers will today move to tighten the continent's borders to ensure that every single migrant is checked against a terror watchlist, after French authorities revealed that Abdelhamid Abaaoud was able to return from Syria via the migrant route of Greece.

At a summit in Brussels, they are also expected to bow to French demands to screen every single EU passport holder entering the continent for the first time to catch fighters returning from the Middle East.

BBM

Shocking to see that it took them so long, and why could they not have foreseen this?
Who invented this dangerous nonsense that all refugees are highly educated peaceloving democratic families with young children? and all from Syria when not even 20% is Syrian?

SWEDEN ADMITS IT HAS BEEN NAIVE OVER ISLAMIST EXTREMISM

FT
http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/4e048c98-8ed6-11e5-a549-b89a1dfede9b.html#axzz3s0i8mJut

Sweden’s prime minister has admitted his country has been “naive” about Islamist extremism even as it expects to receive a record number of refugees this year.

Stefan Löfven told a hastily called press conference on Thursday that both the previous centre-right government and his Social Democrat administration have misjudged the threat and that Sweden would now have to step up its security measures.

“Perhaps it has been hard for us to accept that in our midst there are people sympathising with the Isis killers,” he said.

While Sweden has long prided itself on its generous stance, many commentators are now questioning the wisdom of this, pointing at problems with integration to overstretched local authorities and security forces.

BBM

"hard for us to accept"
Sweden has gag laws that forbid criticism of immigrants and of its immigration policies.
Let's wait for the moment (if ever) when they admit that they chose to close their eyes and ears and simply did not want to know.

Paris Victim Nohemi Gonzalez Was Pursuing Her Dreams in Design
By DAN BILEFSKY, NEW YORK TIMES

NOV. 19, 15

"As an American, she was also representative of the packs of cheerful, starry-eyed foreigners studying abroad for a semester. At any given time, more than 17,000 students from the United States are living and studying in France.

[...]

On Friday, Ms. Gonzalez and a group of friends were out for a night on the town and ended up at La Belle Équipe, a lively bistro on Rue de Charonne. Minutes into the meal, a group of militants sprayed bullets at the restaurant’s terrace, killing 19 people, including Ms. Gonzalez."

Paris attacks: EU ministers to discuss tightening borders
BBCNEWS

France's Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, speaking on Thursday, said it was "urgent that Europe wakes up, organises itself and defends itself against the terrorist threat".

He said France received no warning from other European countries that Abdelhamid Abaaoud - a well-known face of IS and on international "most wanted" lists - had arrived on the continent.
France said it received intelligence from a non-European country some three days after the attacks that Abaaoud had passed through Greece on his return from Syria."

Can anyone explain what happened with the police dog, Diesel? I originally thought the dog was killed when the woman blew herself up.

Now reports say the police were exchanging fire with the suspects for several minutes and then they sent the dog into the building at which point the dog was immediately shot to death in a hail of bullets.

WTH? I haven't followed this story as closely as some others but did the police really send the poor dog into a building full of active shooters? Did the officers stay safely outside while the dog was being gunned down??

Italian forces searching for five terror suspects after attack warning
FBI warns Italian authorities of possible threats to sites such as St Peter’s Basilica and tourist sites in Milan

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/nov/19/italy-five-terror-suspects-attack-warning

Please, not St. Peter's Basilica. It is such a beautiful place. Although, I wonder what this means, if anything:

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepag...a-struck-by-lightning-after-pope-resigns.html

Yeah, I know, OT, and St. Peter's probably gets hit a lot. I also check chicken entrails. Maybe in today's world, it's as good a practice as anything else.
