Ms Autefort's home was searched by police but she was able to provide them with an alibi and was released without charge.

She too was freed when she was able to prove to them that she was elsewhere during the murder.

It took her two days to prove it. It's unfortunate if she had nothing to do with it.

They don't mention her alibi. Some of the previous articles claimed that she was at the wine-tasting event, too.

SBM. That explains how she could get close to him. Since he is no longer the president he got close to someone else.
Yes that’s what puzzles me, I thought she was at the wine tasting too,so could have easily followed Karen home or been waiting for her.
I think there will be a rearrest soon

This was from The Times article, posted on here recently.

Mrs Carter jointly ran the bar with Guerrier, a former executive with Fujitsu Services, and the pair were seen as key to the Café Village buzz along with the Carters’ 69-year-old neighbour, who was questioned and released after the murder and whom police described as “a close friend of the couple”.

So maybe the lady who was questioned helped at the cafe and was still there on the night Karen was attacked? If other people saw her there after the wine tasting that could be her alibi.

I was once arrested by the French police for an alleged armed robbery. Apparently a witness saw me in the street just after the incident and the police took me in and handcuffed me to a radiator for a couple of hours until cleared by other witnesses. On saying that, the French police are generally very slow to make an arrest and are ponderous over their investigation. I am thinking that they made the early arrest arrest to 'shake' things up in order that people start telling them information.

If she had witnesses that could have been established quickly. She was detained for nearly two days. Apparently it has been an ordeal for her and now she left town. I wonder if she had any other connection with the victim.

Until there are any suspects, no memorial service has been organized for Karen in Trémolat. "There probably will be one, but we didn't have the heart to organize it yet. For now, it's status quo," explains one of her teammates on the Reines du Foot senior team. The only tribute, for now, can be found in front of the retiree's home. Someone has placed a vase filled with white flowers and roses.

The lover of a married British woman stabbed to death outside her holiday home in France broke his silence today and described her as a 'lovely lady.'

Jean-Francois Guerrier, 74, had been lying low after discovering the body of Karen Carter a week ago.

But he was seen this morning picking up some post close to his home in the Dordogne village of Trémolat.

He said briefly: 'Karen was a lovely lady, but I can't answer any more questions at the moment.
Mother of four Mrs Carter had recently started a romance with Mr Guerrier despite still being married to her husband Alan, who had been at home in South Africa.

Mr Carter, 65, arrived in Trémolat last night and visited the scene of the murder one week on.

Accompanied by a female friend, he stood silently by the police tape cordoning off the driveway to the guesthouse he had owned with mother-of-four Mrs Carter for the last 15 years.

The friend, who lives in the village, consoled him by putting her arm around his shoulder before they left five minutes later.

Quoting from the link above

So...

"Mr Guerrier
had hosted a wine tasting party at his converted farmhouse,
high in the hills above the village

last Tuesday evening, which had been attended by Mrs Carter, 65.

She left around 10pm
and had promised to phone him
when she was home safe
but never made a call."

Not cafe, but HIS place it seems.

And he only came to see her when she didn't call.

Interesting
that the place of wine tasting differs in various reports.

The only thing certain is
that the murderer was waiting for the victim
ready to pounce
as soon as she arrived home.

And the murderer's traces could have been trodden by commotion
of first aid responders.

I have been wondering about that phone call.

This is a village where nothing ever happens, or so they say.
So why should someone call to tell that they arrived home safely? And even promise to do so? Within the same tiny village?

IMO

It had to do either:

- with her driving after drinking alcohol
(safety)

- or being threatened by someone earlier
(for whatever reason, maybe financial)

JF could have been her trusted confidante.
After all,
he was a kind of important figure in this community (a chairman).

If we are to believe the newspapers, the relationship was new and still kept under wraps. Maybe he planned to arrive quietly, and that’s all to it? They didn’t need to demonstrate their relationship, so he simply arrived ten minutes later, as it was agreed between them?

It would be interesting to know if it was their style, not to disclose their relationship and for him to arrive to her house not with her, but a tad later?

Then someone who lived close by and watched their comings and goings could be in the loop.

In one of the articles posted earlier her neighbor was quoted saying that he saw them together walking towards her house in a late afternoon just a few days prior. The person remarked that they looked like they were a couple.

A judicial inquiry has been opened:

Judicial investigation opened for murder after Karen's death in Dordogne, still no suspect

Alan Carter was questioned for the purposes of the investigation this Wednesday morning before going to the scene of the tragedy for the first time.
...
The couple were not divorced, but had been living apart for years.
...
"We'd got into the habit of talking every day. We had agreed on that for years," explains Alan Carter. "The last time I spoke to her was the day she died."
...
"Because that's how she was, she was happy here. Everyone had accepted and welcomed her."

A few notes from this article:

The husband of Karen arrived in Trémolat on Tuesday after a flight from South Africa.

The case was now being treated as pre-meditated murder, a french prosecutor said on Wednesday.

Karen was a breast cancer survivor. Husband said it was one of the reasons they bought the property in Tremolat.
