Unfortunately not completely unusual in dysfunctional / abusive families. It happened in my own when I was growing up. The last time it happened my brother and I were both university students. Of course, in my case it wasn't a "vicious" assault, it was not that bad, but it still shouldn't have happened. My brother had free range in that respect from around the time I started school.I am still stuck at the he viciously assaulted his own younger sister in front of the parents and they let him stay.
Parents like mine look the other way, blame the victim, 'forget' what had happened the previous day, quibble about the exact meaning of "assault" etc etc.
I have cptsd and I've been in a lot of therapy and now know my experience is not unusual.
