FRANCE - Truck drives into crowd celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, 2016 *Guilty*

"Bouhlel, who had been known to the French police since January, had been on the radar for six months for petty criminality.

It is understood he lost his job as a delivery driver when he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into four cars and had also been involved in a bar brawl.

Walid Hamou, a cousin of Bouhlel's wife Hajer Khalfallah , told MailOnline: 'Bouhlel was not religious. He did not go to the mosque, he did not pray, he did not observe Ramadan.'He drank alcohol, ate pork and took drugs. This is all forbidden under Islam.

'He was not a Muslim, he was a s***.

'He beat his wife, my cousin, he was a nasty piece of work.'"

and should have been in jail for any one of those offenses! If they arrested him for beating his wife two years ago this may have been avoided.

Yesterday, he was stopped by police just hours before he crushed scored of people underneath the wheels of his 25 tonne truck and fired shots indiscriminately at police and innocent bystanders.

He told officers that he was delivering ice-cream to the area and was allowed to park on the waterfront for several hours.

But here's the thing. In jail, who would he be spending time with....more people just like him. IMO, jails are a hotbed of radicalization. I realize he already had what it takes to be a killer...but I can't help but wonder if prisons are where many people are recruited. Prisoner are captive (literally) audiences.

Of course law-breakers need to be punished. I just wonder if the current system of punishment feeds into the system of hate.

Solution? I have no idea.

great question.
I do not have the answers either.
I know something isn't working by allowing violent psychopaths to wander the streets.

"A desperate appeal on social media in the immediate aftermath of last night's massacre in Nice led to a woman being reunited with an eight-month-old boy she feared had been killed.

Tiava Banner posted a photo of the baby on Facebook last night and wrote, in French: 'We have lost BB 8 months.

'Nice friends if you've seen him if you were there if you have collected please contact me!!!!!'

The post was shared more than 22,000 times.

Seems to me I've heard the exact same description of at least one other terrorist not so long ago and wonder of wonders, I don't even remember the name.

I wonder if there's a script given out to describe these guys or if they decide to live life on the "wild side" before doing their good deed of repentance.

They are probably told to live it up and then be cleansed by the act of terrorism. This happened right before 911.

Okay, this might seem like a tangent, but....my mind needs to rest somewhere other than the graphic images and coverage.

Neighbors have mentioned that the killer was impolite and didn't hold doors open for others. We all know that type. This is NOT to imply that people without manners are therefore criminals....but it does show the importance, imo, of teaching our kids manners.

When you open the door consistently for others, when you smile and exchange pleasantries with neighbors, when you give off the demeanor of thoughtfulness, this becomes habit. Manners help shape your character and influence your outlook on life. I want my kids to be thoughtful, caring people...and ONE way (of many ways) to instill those character traits is to teach manners.

And that goes for us too - we grown-ups need to show manners - even when it seems that the culture around us is losing the habits of good manners. Maybe one teeny tiny thing we can do in response to these tragedies is to spruce up our own manners. Americans are a friendly people - so let's support our culture and BE NICE to someone today...a stranger, a neighbor, a friend, a relative, a pet, the environment. Just be nice.

And, please, don't tell me this doesn't matter in the face of terrorism. I know my friendly smile means nothing to someone who hates me. But, it matters to me. And it's something active I can do besides reading news reports and worrying our world is too much of a mess to fix.

Just my personal, dorky, heart-felt opinion.

You would have to post sweetness and light right after I got through telling off: 1) my bank for an outrageous charge to buy new checks; 2) my insurance company who will no longer allow customers, any customers, to pay by credit card.

And that's just my personal reaction to all the crap that goes on in this world.

I don't know if this has been posted, but I do remember seeing a motorcycle driving alongside the truck at the beginning when he speeds up. Very brave person - wish he had succeeded. :anguish:

. German journalist Richard Gutjahr witnessed the start of the attack and described seeing a motorcyclist pursue the truck and try to gain entrance to its cabin. But the biker fell off and was run over by its wheels.
"I stood on the balcony on the Promenade des Anglais, and saw people celebrating there [when] suddenly a truck drove through the crowd," Mr Gutjahr, 42, told the AFP news agency.
"Surprisingly, [the truck driver] drove very slowly and was chased by a motorcyclist.
"The motorcyclist attempted to overtake the truck and even tried to open the driver's door, but he fell and ended up under the wheels of the truck."

You're correct a terrorist in the airport bombing in Turkey recently was also described as a wife beating monster who was not a Muslim.

Nice attack: Hero stopped killer's rampage by jumping into lorry and wrestling with him
The man's murderous rampage could have lasted far longer and taken many more lives without the intervention of a member of the public, sources said

(...)

Egyptian Nader El Shafei told the BBC he saw the driver "looking very nervous".
He said: "I kept yelling at him, waving with my hands to stop and trying to tell him that there is a lot people under his truck - dead already. But he did not give any attention to anyone outside the truck.

"And suddenly I saw him picking up something like a cellphone. I thought he would call the ambulance for the accident but it seemed that I was wrong, because he just picked up his gun and he started to shoot the police.

"Just when they (the police) arrived they just felt something was wrong so they kept yelling at him and when he did not step out - they saw him from the window taking his gun out.
"They knew that would be a gun shooting so they just killed him right away - they did not wait to negotiate or something, they just opened fire on him."

Maybe LE start taking notice of wife beaters. Power, control abuse issues should be taken more seriously. Just like those that torture animals.

Well....the good news is that you're someone who obviously pays bills and is financially literate. That's a good thing!

Hang in there.

The Kouachi brothers (Charlie Hebdo massacre) appeared totally westernized to the outside world.

Hiding your religion and / or true intentions is a common concept in Islam, know as Taqiyya.
There are several forms of lying to non-believers that are permitted under certain circumstances, the best known being taqiyya. These circumstances are typically those that advance the cause of Islam - in some cases by gaining the trust of non-believers in order to draw out their vulnerability and defeat them.

Tawriya: Intentionally creating a false impression.

Muruna: 'Blending in' by setting aside some practices of Islam or Sharia in order to advance others.

More reporting from the press conference:

Bouhel was sentenced this year to a six-month suspended prison sentence for violence, but he was "entirely unknown by intelligence services," Molins said.

The attack began around 10:45 p.m. Thursday, with Bouhel driving a rented, refrigerated truck, French prosecutor François Molins said Friday. The attacker fired several times at three police officers close to a hotel, and the police responded by chasing the vehicle, which still went on for about 300 meters before the officers shot the driver, Molins said. Bouhel was found dead in the passenger seat, he said. In total during the attack, the truck went for about two kilometers along the promenade and hit many spectators there, Molins said.

The truck was rented on Monday and was supposed to have been returned Wednesday.

After the attack, police found in the trailer a bicycle and eight empty pallets. In the cabin, other than the attacker's body, police found a handgun, some ammunition, and a replica handgun and two replica assault rifles, Molins said. In addition, police found in the cab a cell phone and various documents.

A police search of two addresses turned up various phones, IT equipment and documents that investigators are now examining, Molins said.

So what's with the fake guns? Seems kinda useless when you're plowing people down in a truck to bother with fake guns.

I think he may have wanted to get out the truck and take hostages causing more mayhem after his mass murder. I just wonder if this guy intended to work alone or if he was meant to have help to attack and they never showed up.
