Police: Gainesville babysitter arrested after allegedly suffocating, nearly killing toddler

Abby Chosewood is facing charges of felony aggravated assault and felony cruelty to children.

“GAINESVILLE, Ga. — A 23-year-old babysitter is now behind bars after she allegedly hurt a child and nearly killed them earlier this year, according to the Gainesville Police Department.

The department took to Facebook on Tuesday to report the arrest.”

“This is a case in which the child was probably as close to death as you can get,” Lt. Kevin Holbrook said. “The child received numerous injuries, numerous broken bones to include a femur. A femur is one of the strongest bones we have in our bodies.”

Holbrook said the child had petechiae and bruising on her body from a “strangulation-type” injury. However, he said they don’t know whether the child was choked or smothered – only that the child was deprived of oxygen.

The parents did not have nanny cams in the home.

Lt. Kevin Holbrook of the Gainesville Police told WSB-TV: “It is unthinkable and there is nothing for us to go on exactly why this did happen. This is something that we may never know — as when the child obviously is too young to tell us the truth. But obviously, Chosewood knows exactly what happened and hopefully, it’ll come out in court.”
