Slain DeKalb County officer identified as David Rose, 33

Phil Helsel

David Rose, 33, a father of two with a third on the way, was the DeKalb County police officer killed while responding to reports of a shooter in Atlanta today, the police department said.

He had been with the police department since September.

One wonders if the shooter had some kind of issue with CVS? This has been in the news in recent days.

Maybe that’s where he received the Covid vaccine that he supposed made him sick?

This is just endless. So many carrying grudges, blaming a person or an institution, and then taking their grievances out on innocent people.

IMO

Grrr. The CDC??

I know people who work for the CDC so I'm angry on a personal level as well as national level. We're a nation that shoots each other.

CDC = Center of Disease Control

jmo
What is wrong with (some) people? Seriously... WHAT?!?

One distinguishing aspect of the CDC is that they can attract crazies from both sides of the political spectrum:

- Right wing opposition to COVID policies (past news, but to extremists, its likely still current).

- Left wing and Right wing opposition to vaccine policies. One place where religious fundamentalists and trendy crunchies can meet and greet each as friends is opposition to school vaccination policies. CDC does not set these policies. But.... extremists don't care.

He referred to the suspect as “a known person that may have some interests in certain things, that I can’t reiterate right know with any confidence until the investigation is fully conducted.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe into the shooting, officials said.

From what I saw on CNN, the CVS is in the vicinity of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC was the target of his attack, that’s why they were on lockdown.

It’s possible other crazy nutters with assault rifles will be triggered by this. It’s like we’re living in the Middle Ages, with people being afraid of science and medicine.

So sad, but a very brave officer. I can’t think of any more dangerous situation for an officer to face than dealing with a mass shooter with an assault weapon.

The Google map aerial view shows that the CVS is across the street (Clifton Road) from the CDC campus:

(And the Emory University campus connects with/is a part of the CDC campus. Emory is a bit to the south and east of the CDC.)

Eta:
If you look on street view, you can see CVS on the right. On the left (under the green light) you see a blue sign which is the entrance for the CDC:

" 'This evening,
there is a wife without a husband.
There are three children, one unborn,
without a father',

DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson said during a press conference.

'There is a mother and a father,
as well as siblings who also share in this traumatic loss.
Let’s join together to give this family the support it needs'.

Rose was shot by a gunman firing wildly at CDC buildings near Emory University.

CDC Director Susan Monarez,
FBI Director Kash Patel,
and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp
recognized Rose's death
as a brave sacrifice."

Rest in Peace Officer.
Condolences to Family.

Holding a grudge based on misinformation. It doesn't get worse.

"The shooter was armed with a long gun, and authorities recovered three additional firearms at the scene, according to a law enforcement official"

Shooter identified:

"The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified the man who opened fire at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White of Kennesaw, Georgia."

Shooter Patrick Joseph White lived in Kennesaw, which is about 30 miles northwest of Atlanta where the CDC is headquartered.

Seems the shooter was a homegrown local man.

"White’s neighbor, Joshua Shirah, told WSBTV the 30-year-old was 'an OK guy' who lived with his parents and helped neighbors with yard work.

'Not the kind of person I thought would do that, but stuff happens,' Shirah said.

Police are reportedly working on the theory that the CDC was the shooter’s target because he 'blamed his illness on the Covid-19 vaccine,' a law enforcement official told CNN."

A neighbor of White told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that White spoke with her multiple times about his distrust of COVID-19 vaccines.

Nancy Hoalst, who lives in same cul-de-sac as White’s family, said he seemed like a good guy” while doing yard work and walking dogs for neighbors, but would bring up vaccines even in unrelated conversations.

“He was very unsettled and he very deeply believed that vaccines hurt him and were hurting other people.” Hoalst told the Atlanta newspaper. “He emphatically believed that.”

CDC workers already faced uncertain futures due to funding cuts, layoffs and political disputes over their agency’s mission. “Save the CDC” signs are common in some Atlanta-area neighborhoods, and a group of laid-off employees has been demanding action from elected officials to push back against the Trump administration’s cuts.

This shooting was the “physical embodiment of the narrative that has taken over, attacking science, and attacking our federal workers,” said Sarah Boim, a former CDC communications staffer who was fired this year during wave of terminations.
