GUILTY GA - Antonio Santiago, 13 mos, Brunswick, 21 March 2013 - #3

The Brunswick News article stated:

"
Kevin Gough made his claim in a filing this week, days after Glynn County Superior Court Judge Stephen Kelley said he will move the trial of alleged shooter De'Marquise Elkins, 17, to Marietta, about 300 miles northwest of Brunswick. The move is designed to make it easier to select jurors who are more likely not to have formed opinions on the case before a trial is to begin Aug. 19. "

not surprising. Bout time mom started worrying about her own behind rather than covering for her son's shooting a sleeping toddler IN THE FACE. Sorry, couldn't help myself.

MOO this is a woman familiar with the court system. She knows which way the wind is a blowing and is acting in her own best interest. Too bad she didn't give that some consideration before disposing of her son's weapon.

well of course mom is going to have residue - she was right there trying to block baby as he was SHOT IN THE FACE.

Father having residue is interesting. I would have to go back and look at initial reports but GSR can be transferred and if he was onscene right after or he touched mom or baby right after he is going to have GSR too MOO

For that matter I imagine he could even have gotten it off the stroller much later. They showed that danged thing sitting there on the corner for hours after the shooting.

This attorney for DE is good, I will give him that but he is not good enough in my opinion to get his client off for shooting this sleeping baby in the face. Nope

Wow. Just.....wow.

WHAT A COINCIDENCE that family members of the accused were arrested for disposing of the murder weapon, though. I guess they just coincidentally 'found' the gun and as good citizens were disposing of it in a pond where it couldn't be used to SHOOT ANY MORE BABIES IN THE FACE????

Disgusting.

Although I will say this quote from the linked article:

West and Santiago are no longer together, and Santiago (pictured, below) couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday because he's in jail, being held without bail, on charges of aggravated stalking related to family violence and violation of probation.

...does not really surprise me as Santiago was screaming at/blaming the mother afterwards instead of giving any sort of comfort. IMO, he has anger issues. BUT, as ticya pointed out, the stroller (and who knows, possibly other belongings) were left unsecured for a good time after the shooting, so I would not at all be surprised at this possible GSR being transfer residue from little Antonio's belongings.

her daughter has historical reasons to feel at odds with her mother that have little or nothing to do with this case. MOO

ITA. Transfer and contamination are both possibilities as to why father would have gunshot residue on him. Rather obviously, no one suggested he was anywhere near the scene. Furthermore, he seems to be very attached to the child, despite whatever issues with anger management he might have had.

I'm sure the police could determine the difference between transfer residue and residue that was left as a result of the shooting. IMO there is no reason the dad should have any traceable gun residue on him, even by way of transfer, if he truly was nowhere near the scene.

As far as the supposed gun found by the police in the lake, who knows if that is true. I have not posted here but lurked, and I know we aren't supposed to question the police or blame the mother. There were a lot of holes in the official story but again, I won't go into it because it would point back to the mother.

In backward towns like this, all kinda shenanigans go on in police departments. There was obviously a reason the police didn't want to disclose the residue evidence to the defense.

Yes, we don't dare point a finger in that direction but I notice many get to make remarks about why nobody took up a collection or some other sarcastic comment about the ones awaiting trial (not convicted).

I know it's really hard to believe and many don't WANT to believe it, but anything is possible...

You are sure? Based on what, exactly? Gun shot residue is gun shot residue. There is no difference between transferred gun shot residue and residue that was left because of the shooting.

Hi all...

Long time no post.

This whole story is a head scratcher...I'm just wondering if anyone knows if this detail has been verified yet:

"One key item Lockwood said the defense has not received is the details of a crime laboratory report that shows the bullet removed from Antonio's body was not from the same manufacturer as the bullet removed from the leg of his mother, Sherry West."

Now, is it possible same gun, different bullets?? I'm just very confused about this whole, terribly tragic case.

...it is unclear how or why the baby's father, Louis Santiago, would have been exposed to gunshot residue. A conclusion from the state forensic report says, "This supports the possibility that [Louis Santiago] discharged a firearm, was in close proximity to a firearm upon discharge, or came into contact with an item whose surface bears GSR [gunshot residue]."

It's not conclusive of anything, but it sure raises some questions.

BBM, I would think that the rifling marks on the different bullets would show that they were fired from the same gun. I hope so anyway.

The fb page of the shooter is definitely interesting and shows just the kind of person he and his associates are.https://www.facebook.com/demarquise.elkins?fref=ts

Of particular interest is the "about" blurb in which he says that "ME IN MY NI**A"S A TURN UR BLO5K IN TO MURDER SCENE". How very nice that he had a goal in life and achieved it before he even turned 18. And such a supportive family to join in the commission and coverup of his crime. (insert barfing smiley here!)

like a stroller, diaper bag or significant other? Imagine that

Also this:
" Elkins was also indicted on two counts in a second attempted robbery and shooting that happened 10 days before the baby was slain. On March 11, according to the indictment, Elkins tried to rob a person identified as Wilfredo Calix-Flores, pointing a gun at him while demanding his cellphone and wallet. Elkins shot Calix-Flores in the arm with the same caliber revolver used to kill the baby 10 days later, the indictment says. He is charged with attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon."

So we have a shooting before the baby's murder with the same caliber gun. Hopefully they have the bullet from that shooting and can compare the rifling marks (or whatever marks they use) to pull together the case to show that the common denominator with the crimes, the gun and the bullets was Elkins.

This case is really strange .. I'm not sure what I believe at the moment, guess we'll just have to see what comes out in court.

And the prior robbery victim was a pastor who is very much capable of testifying. And they could also compare bullets from that case to Antonio's case. He says he recognized Elkins as the one who shot him.

"Flores says when he saw 17-year-old De'Marquise Elkins in the news, he knew it was the same person who shot him a week earlier."

It would presumably still be the same caliber bullet. Otherwise it wouldn't fit in the gun. Somebody could have had different batches of bullets and put them into the same gun. Especially if that somebody wasn't actually buying bullets. The gun was not legal, right? He might have been putting in whatever bullets he could find.
