The trial of Colin Gray, father of a teen accused in a deadly Georgia high school shooting, began Monday (February 16) in Barrow County. Grayfaces nearly 30 felony counts, including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, for allegedly providing his son with the rifle used in the September 2024 attack that left two students and two teachers dead.

Prosecutors argue that Gray ignored multiple warning signs about his son's behavior before giving him the weapon used in the Apalachee High School shooting in Winder, Georgia.

"This is not a case about holding parents accountable for what their children do," Barrow County District Attorney Brad Smith told jurors during opening statements. "This case is about this defendant and his actions in allowing a child that he has custody over access to a firearm and ammunition after being warned that that child was going to harm others."

Colin Gray, 55, is charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree murder and other offenses in connection with the September 4, 2024 shooting at Apalachee High School by his troubled son Colt.

Two 14-year-old students and two teachers were killed and nine people wounded in the shooting in Winder, Georgia. Colt Gray, who was 14 then and is now 16, has been charged as an adult and is awaiting a trial date.

During opening arguments on Monday in the trial of the father, prosecutors said he bought Colt Gray the AR-15-style rifle used in the shooting for Christmas 2023 despite warnings that his son had threatened to carry out a school shooting.

According to the FBI, sheriffs interviewed the then 13-year-old Gray and his father in May 2023 after receiving anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting.

The mother should have been charged too. Absurdly neglectful, dysfunctional parents, the both of them.

Based on the opening statements, the defendant should be easily convicted. But the state has not produced any evidence so far that implicates the Dad. I know they have to proof up the murders/injuries. I assume we're getting to Dad's culpability once that's done.

IMO .................. Their three children never had a chance.

The 14-year-old alleged gunman’s maternal grandfather, told The Post at the time that his former son-in-law, Colin Gray, should bear much of the blame for the bloodbath.

“Spending 11 years with that son of a 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 screaming and hollering every day — it can affect anybody,” stated the grandfather, 81, said of his 54-year-old ex-son-in-law, who was married to his daughter. “He’s evil,” he said of the older Gray. “They couldn’t, they didn’t survive in it,” he said of the family.

His ex-wife is in prison for 5 years; convicted of possessing drugs, including fentanyl and meth, and damaging her ex-husband's work vehicle. Also has another trial to attend for exploitation and intimidation of a disabled adult or elderly person, false imprisonment, criminal damage to property in the second degree, and theft. If convicted she faces 20 years.

CG: The landlord told the outlet that the Grays were slow to leave the rental property and left behind their two German Shepherds and several priceless memories. “I imagine the next place where they were renting didn’t allow dogs, so they just left them,” he claimed, saying that the couple had ignored his attempts at reuniting them with their dogs. CG had only returned to the house after the locks were changed to retrieve the firearms he left behind. The 54-year-old father reportedly “kicked in the door to get his guns out.”
