I don't understand why the docs will not allow her husband in to see her.

The only reason i can think is that (as others have suggested) they were not legally married. He would have no legal right to be there (i think :shrug )

Would there be a reason to wait several days to take someone off the ventilator? I understand that some people would want to wait for a miracle, but is there a medical reason to do so?

No. I think most hospitals would give the family a day or two at the most (and move the patient out of ICU), but the hospital can (and many do) go to court t get a court order to remove life support (talking in cases of brain death).

There is a set of criteria for brain death which was developed by neurologists at Harvard. During the time I was employed as an RN in the ICU of a community hospital this set of criteria was adopted by our hospital. The idea behind the Harvard criteria was to try to set a standard among acute care facilities in order to accurately determine brain death, and to document accurately the patient's status to address whether brain death had occurred. Here are the criteria:Harvard criteria A series of 4 parameters delineated by the the Harvard Medical School ad hoc committee for irreversible coma
Harvard criteria for brain death
• Unreceptivity and unresponsiveness
• No movement or breathing
• No reflexes
• Flat electroencephalogram (confirmatory)
In addition, the following must be present
• Body temperature ≥32º C
• Absence of CNS depressants

Most hospitals still utilize these criteria. If, tragically, she has no brain activity on her EEG I doubt anything definitive will be heard until tomorrow. Tomorrow will mark the third day, and if she meets the criteria the physician and medical team will most likely discuss with the family the diagnosis of brain death, and will discuss with them options - taking her off the ventilator or, even worse, IMO, placing her in a long term facility. Under the current reimbursement guidelines, patients declared brain dead are no longer eligible for acute care as the prognosis allows for no improvement. The silence is deafening, and I truly fear this is where this tragic case is headed. My heart aches for this young girl as she grew up with poor role models, even though her parents both loved her dearly. All the money in her estate could not heal her emotional wounds, and it saddens me beyond words that it looks very bleak for her to survive this and overcome the deep wounds in her heart.

BBM
If reports are true that she is in a medically induced coma, she would be ineligible for testing for brain death. Also the case if she has significant brain swelling at this time.

I'm guessing the "no breathing" criteria would be tested by an apnea test.

The "no movement" criteria is puzzling to me, as it is possible for a brain dead patient to move due to spinal-mediated reflexes.

There is at least one mainstream report (E news i think ) that said she was never in a medically induced coma.

I tend to believe she had some degree of brain swelling though.....

So IDK

Sometimes they wait for family members who are far away to get there. Also, if she is not brain dead but extremely brain damaged, there may be a dispute within the family about whether or not to discontinue life support. They may need time to determine what BK's wishes were, and who legally is the person with the right to make that decision in the absence of a legal document signed by BK.

Those are just a couple of reasons I can think of off the top of my head.

I can see how there could be some "who is in charge" issues going on.

I don't think suspicions would be enough to override his right to be there and his right to make decisions on her behalf, if they are legally married.

I have no idea, just trying to come up with an idea. One more idea, if Bobby Brown didn't want him there, let's say, I know that I wouldn't want to cross the threshold into her room, who knows what could happen? Maybe he is pushing his weight around, and/or threatening her husband. It doesn't make sense if they are married why he is not allowed in. But, didn't someone here say, there was a restraining order out on him?

Her maternal Grandmother Cissy lives in NJ where the weather is compromising flights out.

This is why i suspect her medical condition may be clear but no decisions have been made yet because of personalities... Which would be disturbing.

LE can come in and remove disruptive family members, though staff would probably do all they can to mediate and work out a plan where everyone can agree and be satisfied....

This could also be why people are reporting "glimmer of hope" and "minimal brain activity" so that they can assure grandma that she is still alive until grandma gets there.... Could be family making statements to press so grandma can make it there....

I highly doubt any life or death decisions will be made before Cissy Houston gets there and there have been no reports that she is in Atlanta. I haven't seen any speculation that she is unwell either, in fact she was performing backup not too terribly long ago. If Bobbi Kris and NG are married the family cannot ban him. For all we know there may not be any strife at all at this juncture. I do agree that if they are NOT married then there is plenty of room for speculation that they are trying to determine who is in charge for lack of a better term.

IDK But I am thinking that they did not get married legally and bobby brown and PH will probably be the ones fighting it out.

Given the supposed restraining order and how her family treated BB (according to reports) at WH's funeral, I will be pleasantly surprised if everyone is getting along during this highly emotionally charged event. They could be perfectly behaved.

nrdsb4 - The "no movemenet" criteria refers to purposeful movement. Totally areflexic - lac of purposeful movement. One of the neurologists at the hospital where I worked would pinch nipples - male or female - to see if this elicited any reflexic movement. (Always made me cringe) If refelxes are present it is a sign that the lower brain - the brain stem - is still functioning, and therefore the patient would not be brain dead. The brain stem functioning but higher brain function being absent is what causes a persistent vegetative state, as opposed to total brain death.

@JessicajagloisWSB (news reporter) A source tells me the family will make the decision to take Bobbi Kristina off life support within the next few days. #PrayForBobbiKristina
