Right I got that, I said - "a couple crazy brothers". I'm interested in learning about their parents, had they sought help for these two? Was this behavior drug induced? It would make sense they have "partnered" in some sense. He killed the folks who lived in the home his brother previously targeted.

Would be good to know if Matthew exhibited the same behavior and criminal activity. I can't recall the age difference between the brothers.

Found this article where parents gave a statement after the death of their son Austin.

'In the brief statement, the family apologized and noted that 27-year-old Austin Lanz struggled with “many mental health challenges.”

'We are so sorry and heartbroken:' Family of accused Pentagon attacker apologizes

Lanz's family released the following statement:

We are devastated by the loss of our son, Austin, and of officer George Gonzalez. We want officer Gonzalez’s family and friends to know that we are so sorry and heartbroken for them. We will forever be thankful for his service and dedication to the safety and well-being of our country.

The last few months of Austin’s life were overcome with many mental health challenges. Unfortunately, despite time spent in the criminal justice system with their special requirements his hospital stays and numerous professional mental health evaluations, Austin did not receive any official diagnosis, therefore, he was unable to sufficiently deal with his mental health nor get the help he so desperately needed.

While we sit in great disbelief over the events that occurred and continue to mourn for lives lost, we are hopeful that this tragedy can help bring greater awareness and change to the growing mental health crisis in our country.

Our family would greatly appreciate privacy during this most difficult time as we continue to grieve.

Thanks for that @watcher9 - it sounds like the family was aware and tried to help him? We've seen other situations like this where a parent's hands are tied. BTW, after Austin killed the pentagon officer - he took his gun & shot and killed himself.

Oh my Gosh!! So the folks who lived in the Verbena Street home before the Hicks family, were being harassed by Lanz for months. They leave and sell the home to the Hicks in September. I guess a real estate disclosure isn't mandated - hey a couple crazy brothers live behind you, one of them harassed us for months before cops would finally arrest him, but good look with that o_O

Truly a tragedy and seems so preventable :(
What would they disclose? The 27 yo that broke into the home was dead.
I would assume problem solved.
Who would ever imagine the 22 yo brother would go after new home owners?
Honest question, I'm not being snarky.

You bring up a very good point!
It's possible that the realtor did explain but it was no longer a threat.
I wonder if ML has had issues in the past like his brother or did he just go off the deep end after his brother killed himself?

This is an insane story. So sad. Can’t imagine what’s going through the previous owners’ minds right now

Wow, what a completely bizarre case. It would seem that this was a case of mistaken identity -- perhaps the younger brother thought he was carrying out the older one's vendetta, not realizing that family had moved?? In any case, a senseless tragedy, and so awful their child will never know his parents. I wonder if they had a security system, and if it would have helped at all in this case.

I think it's sad that the previous owners broke up during this. I can't say because of it, but they did buy a house together.
I'm sure they think they dodged a bullet.
I wondered if ML even realized it was a new couple in the home.
I wonder a lot! Did the dog bark? Did he know a child was there?
Where was the couple when he broke in?
They had security cameras, so I'm sure that the police know a lot.
Whose weapon was it?
Just so weird. All of it!

There are cameras on the home. I saw 2. The previous home owner had security cameras installed at the police recommendation. That's how the older brother was identified.

I can't imagine how they feel, the regret and asking themselves what they could have done different, which is a common response to death.
It's really kind of amazing ML is still alive, unlike his big brother, ML survived stabbing a cop, which is sometimes referred to as "suicide by cop".

I can't either. Unless other information comes to light, the Lanz parents are also victims.

I have wondered if he was trying to be a "copy cat".
I have no idea about his past or upbringing, but based in what the brother did to the police officers, I wonder about their upbringing. Also his grief for his older brother.
Neither excuse his actions.
The brother did have a lengthy criminal history. I'm not sure Mainstream media published it. It is out there though.
I did see one article, that was news to me. I'll see if I can link.

What triggered his attack outside the Pentagon also remains unknown. In a statement released by Lanz’s family, his relatives offered condolences to the family of George Gonzalez, the slain Pentagon police officer, saying they were “sorry and heartbroken.” In an interview, the family’s attorney, Jimmy Berry, said the family knows of no motive for the attack.

Silly question! Where was AL on July 28 2021. Just a thought.
(Was he near Piedmont Park?)
Unprovoked knife attack etc...
*see below
"In the intake area, Lanz allegedly “without warning or provocation” attacked two Cobb County Sheriff’s deputies, according to an arrest warrant. One was left with a dislocated thumb and the other suffered a bone chip and a torn ACL. Lanz damaged one of the officer’s Tasers, and it took multiple deputies to restrain him, the warrant states."
As the deputies wrestled with him, Lanz told them he wanted to fight all of them and called them “gay” for ganging up on him, according to an arrest warrant"

Meanwhile, Lanz enlisted in the Marines on Oct. 9, 2012, but was "administratively separated" on Nov. 2, 2012, "and never earned the title Marine," Marine Corps spokesman Maj. Jim Stenger said.
There is a behavioral threat assessment that was done on AL, but I'm sure it isn't allowed here.

Perhaps with the recent crimes of the brother, they will reassess?
