Unidentified Cases | DeKalb County GA (#94-0883)

On July 18, 1994, an unidentified deceased individual was found suspended in a ‘tree canopy,’ 12 feet above a creek bed near DeKalb Industrial Way. The tree canopy is described as a ‘very large, igloo-shaped, kudzu and vine canopy.’ The tree canopy had two floors, one of the rooms large enough to accommodate about 15-20 people. The individual was found wearing blue jeans with a size 32 waist and 31 inseams, along with a USPS key and a pocket knife. Due to a note found in the individual’s pocket, it is suspected he was a patient at the Bridgeport Transitional Living Center at some point in the past.

What a strange case.

I hadn’t noticed that he was also found with a pocket protector from an insurance agency in Bridgeport, CT, and was unfamiliar with the Bridgeport Transitional Living Center, but it sounds like he had come fairly recently from Connecticut. I would love to see a photo of the structure he was living in; it sounds incredible. I wonder if they were ever able to trace the USPS key at all?

I wonder if this John Doe was one of the many people with Sickle Cell Disease. I seem to recall severe erectile dysfunction being a symptom of this condition.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) - What Is Sickle Cell?
Sickle cell disease affects more than 100,000 people in the United States and 8 million people worldwide. In the United States, 9 of 10 people who have sickle cell disease are of African ancestry or identify as Black:
  • About 1 in 13 Black babies are born with sickle cell trait, meaning that they inherited a sickle cell gene from one parent.
  • About 1 in every 365 Black babies are born with sickle cell disease, meaning they inherited a sickle cell gene from each parent.

Priapism » Sickle Cell Society
The majority of males with sickle cell anaemia (HbSS) are likely to experience a priapism in their lifetime.
Untreated, priapism can cause tissue damage and severe pain in the tissue of the penis will occur. This is likely to result in some long-term tissue damage, permanent erectile dysfunction and the loss of normal sexual function.
