Reward offered in Lauren Giddings slaying
Macon police announced a $12,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the Lauren Giddings slaying.

Does this mean they are now offering reward money for info because they have no leads?

Unfortunatly that's what I'm thinking too.
Chief Burns has said that he doesn't expect an arrest today, so whatever evidence they've collected last night and last week must not have given them enough for a solid suspect. At least not until all the results come back from Quantico, VA

FWIW, My understanding from listening to the live televised audio of the press conference and seeing local anchor Frank Malloy explain it is that the man who heads up Macon Regional Crimestoppers ordinarily has a fund that would allow a $1000 reward to anyone who provides tips to solve any local, unsolved crime. In this situation, my understanding is that the public has donated money to the fund (total of 11k) in order that they may offer more money for a person who comes forth with info leading to an arrest/charge.

I've never heard of the public "chipping in" for MRCS reward money, but whatever works (if it works), right??

Since today's press conference provided no new info, we're left with only the recent public statement http://www.macon.com/2011/07/13/1629505/police-back-inside-mcdaniels-apartment.html of the fact that the burglary charges were based on two condoms found inside McD's apartment. I've been trying to imagine the conversation -- during a search warrant being executed on McDM's apartment -- that led to McD telling the cops that the condoms had been stolen two years previously from other apartments. [IMAGINATION, NOT FACT]:

Officer: I see these two condoms; been getting any lately?
McD: Oh, no sir . . . I'm a virgin. I'm saving myself for marriage.
Officer: So, why do you have condoms?
McD: Uh, they're not mine. They belong to my neighbors.
Officer: So, why do YOU have them?
McD: I took them from other apartments. I figured if they didn't have condoms, they might not keep sinning the way they do.

OK -- I know there is no evidence that McD is religious (and that the virgin comment is only hearsay in Angel's earlier post), and I know that McD has a bad case of motor-mouth, but how in the heck does McD end up telling officers he's a sneak thief? This is highly bizarre, even for a weird guy, and he must've been forced into this admission to protect himself from other, more damaging, conclusions being drawn by investigators. Were the condoms stored (displayed?) in such a way as to attract officers' attention?

Any thoughts?

So if he killed Lauren does he think she was a sinner, I wonder? :(

That's what I'm wondering, Dupree.

I'm glad they're offering it ... just seems like odd timing. If she were dismembered in any one of those apartments, it would be really hard to clean up every little thing. Oh, and that makes me think of something else. Wouldn't you think a place that had been thoroughly cleaned of blood would smell of bleach? Does anyone know if the cadaver dogs hit inside any of those apartments?

The second K-9 team didn't even search McDaniels apartment.

http://www.newscentralga.com/news/local/McDaniels-Superior-Court-Hearing-Cancelled-125511988.html

According to Bibb County District Attorney Greg Winters, the superior court bond hearing scheduled for Stephen McDaniel on Thursday July 14th has been canceled.

Canceled because of a conflict that he worked as an intern at the DA's office. That seems to be a bit of a stretch. In that vein of thought, anyone who worked in the DA's office would never be able to go to court. Makes me wonder what is really going on.

I'd like to see one of our lawyers on the forum respond to this----from the little I know, I seem to remember that a person can request alternate judges/staff atty if they feel there is a question of impartiality. I wonder if this is a request from Lawyer Buford or if it's Winters bringing up the "conflict" so that it forces Buford to have the hearing reset, hence keeping McD in jail longer...

Hmmm...the plot thickens!:twocents:

The attorney for burglary suspect Stephen McDaniel has filed a motion asking a judge to disqualify the Bibb County District Attorney's case from prosecuting him.

The motion argues that local prosecutors should not handle the case because McDaniel is a former law clerk in the DA's office. That makes a conflict of interest, argues defense lawyer Floyd Buford.

Because of the conflict motion, Buford has also withdrawn his request for a bond hearing for McDaniel. That hearing was scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

thanks for clearing that up...nice snag, Knox.

I believe the reason for the additional search was because the FBI found something of interest (out of the 74 submitted articles), and had very specific requests for what to search for in McD's apartment.

Burns said they had not recieved the report/package but had been exchanging emails. I think that is what the emails were about. IMO it's clear the FBI/LE have something of interest (re: McD) they're not sharing, yet.

Also, I find it very telling that right here before his bond hearing, we have another delay.

I had wondered about the religious thing too. I wonder if ever McD heard something through those thin apartment walls that he didn't like, or that he didn't think was proper. Particularly considering her devout mass attendance. (Please understand I am not implying that LG was improper or promiscuous at all, just that these are modern times and as stated before virginity is fairly uncommon at her's and McD's age)

Wow! Wasn't able to check-in often today or post but a HUGE thank you to everyone for all the new info. And an extra thanks to Angel for the photos and the lead on the now confirmed condom thefts.

I'm curious if the apartments McD stole the condoms from had male or female tenants. Also wondering if anyone has any theories on what possible info the FBI provided LE to prompt another search of McD's apartment. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts!

So if he killed Lauren does he think she was a sinner, I wonder? :(

I don't think there is any connection between these burglaries and the murder motive, but the burglaries give some clues to SMD's psychology. Sneaking into someone else's apartment may be thrilling (narcissism). But in addition to skulking around, he stole two condoms. Possible motives:

1) Too embarrassed or too cheap to buy his own? -- Get serious; too much downside for too little reward.
2) To prevent the purchasers from using them, either because unmarried sex is a sin (a very uncommon opinion); or because contraception is a sin (some radical anti-abortion types think so) -- maybe, but no other evidence that SMD holds those opinions.
3) To subtly exert control over others (especially when the actor has no other means of influencing others). -- most likely, and -- I suspect -- consistent with the psychology of one who would, in some circumstances, attempt to exert total and final control over another.

And, then there is still the problem of guessing how the condom theft burglaries came to the attention of investigators. Knowing why he stole them and how/where he kept them might help figure why he admitted that he had stolen them while inside others' apartments.

why is everybody speculating that mcd was a religious freak???? did i miss something?!?!

No, No -- just the reverse: Of the three possible motives for condom theft that I could dream up, I think it is highly UNlikely that SMD was acting from a religious motive. Neither in the admitted burglaries or the possible murder. Perhaps some folks who actually know SMD could shed light on SMD's general political/religious/social beliefs as they impact possible motives, but without some such evidence of religious judgementalism, I don't think that's probable.

i just think if it was mcd, they would already know it by now.

Hi Angelanalyzes! Again thanks so much for taking the time to travel to Macon and be the eyes and ears on the scene for those of us in other parts not able to be there in Macon.. Your pictures help in a tremendous way that you probably do not even realize.. They being of relevant and important areas of interest truly give us, those unable to be there, an accurate and image of reference for what the layout, size, and terrain of Barristers Hall and it's surrounding areas.. It is a tremendous asset so thanks to you for your taking the time to photograph, load, and upload for us all to be Able to view..

As for the smell and the call that resulted in their dispatching officers to, I assume check the trashcans there in the immediate vicinity.. I know you has stated that you were unable to wait for the officers but by chance were you ever given any confirmation either way of the smell actually being indicative of
"something" or not??...

One other question.. My curiosity was piqued and I have been meaning to ask but have always gotten sidetracked.. Just now in revisiting your tumblr blog to view your photos I, again was reminded of what had originally piqued my curiosity.. So before I am again sidetracked a d forget to ask.. Might you share any of the info that the local that contacted you thru your blog has shared with you? Sorry if it comes across as being nosy, but moreso as I said my curiosity piqued especially by your response to the local stating that if in fact true that you were stunned at whatever the local had shared with you..(of course you can always just tell me to butt out and mind my own business..lol.. But definitely had to atleast ask..)

I believe that it is within TOS rules that as long as it is stated as such(i.e. That the info is not confirmed therefor a rumor)that the info is allowed to be shared(of course, only if you wish to do so)granted it is stated as a rumor and treated as such.. (bessie.. Please correct me if I am wrong or mistaken of my understanding of the rules pertaining to a "rumor")..

Again thanks so much for sharing your photos and being a very active, positive, as well as knowledgable member with posts that really are of substance and help us in having adult discussions about the real possibilities of what has happened to this beautiful 27 year old young woman whose life has been needlessly lost and robbed of her future as well as stolen from the arms and hearts of the so very many loved one's that Lauren has...

I'm guessing that the DA & Chief of Police are not telling all they know. When they are satisfied that they've built a definitive case, then they'll tell us just enough of what they know to make most folks say, "yep, he did it" (whether "he" is SMD or somebody else).

Welcome to WS, Thinman! I agree with you on this one. I think that the Macon Police are being very careful about building their case, and I was very encouraged by the press conference.
