From article:
“This case, as the court knows, is incredibly gruesome in a way that I believe will create additional trauma,” said Atlantic Judicial Circuit District Attorney Laurie Baio.

Kassotis has been in custody since May 2023 for the murder of his wife, Mindi Kassotis, in the fall of 2022.

Prosecutors revealed that her body was found in four pieces, with tool marks present. Both the prosecution and defense agreed that crime scene photos should not leave the courtroom.

“It is my intention, your honor, not to be gruesome but rather to be strictly and solely forensically informative to the jury,” Baio said.

The court also debated whether testimony from one of Kassotis’ ex-wives should be allowed.

Prosecutors noted that just months before Mindi Kassotis’ death, the ex-wife had won a $1.5 million divorce judgment against Nicholas. They allege that Kassotis and his wife went on the run to avoid paying the judgment.

However, the defense argued that the couple was fleeing from someone else — an individual named Jim McIntyre, who allegedly controlled their finances.

“They were living, moving every few days, few weeks, few months, under control of this person we’ll keep calling Jim McIntyre,” said Doug Weinstein, Kassotis’ attorney. “While the state says that that’s a fabrication, it’s clearly not a fabrication that he makes up after the fact. Because he and Mindi told people about what was going on, why they were on the run, and everything else.”

Prosecutors dismissed the Jim McIntyre story as a “CIA, conspiracy theory type argument.”

They also requested the judge allow a Target receipt as evidence.

“There is a Target receipt that the defendant purchases on his way to meet with Samantha Colsmith, his third wife. Where he purchased condoms and Old Spice within days of his wife being deceased,” Baio said.

Weinstein countered, “I don’t know the relevance of Mr. Kassotis, other than color, the relevance of Mr. Kassotis buying condoms and Old Spice, but I’ll get to that at that point in time.”

Kassotis’ trial is scheduled to begin on Aug. 4 and is expected to last two to three weeks. Prosecutors plan to call at least 35 witnesses"

Some very bizarre details are coming out.
Prosecutors noted that just months before Mindi Kassotis’ death, the ex-wife had won a $1.5 million divorce judgment against Nicholas. They allege that Kassotis and his wife went on the run to avoid paying the judgment.
I'm not exactly sure when he divorced his first wife, but he married Mindi in 2016. Yet from the above quote it seems like the divorce settlement wasn't finalized until 2022. Bigamy? Or maybe he was hiding assets/not paying alimony and the ex got a court to intercede.

I don't even know what to say about this 'Jim McIntyre' business. Does Kassotis really believe this or is he trying to act schizophrenic?

“There is a Target receipt that the defendant purchases on his way to meet with Samantha Colsmith, his third wife. Where he purchased condoms and Old Spice within days of his wife being deceased,” Baio said.
As discussed earlier in this thread, his third wife is Samantha Kolesnik, not Colsmith. I assume that the reporter misheard the name and didn't bother to double-check the correct spelling.

LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga. (Court TV) — A former naval officer accused of murdering and dismembering his wife is standing trial in Georgia.

Nicholas Kassotis, 43, is facing multiple charges, including malice murder, in the November 2022 death of Mindi Kassotis, 40. Hunters found Mindi’s dismembered remains on December 2 in Riceboro. Authorities said her remains were found in two different locations, three miles apart, according to a press release.

Authorities haven’t released a theory on motive, but at a pretrial hearing in July, prosecutors argued the couple was on the run to avoid paying a $1.5 million divorce judgment to Nicholas’ ex-wife, reported WJCL.

Here's some crazy background on this case....buckle up! Nicholas Kassotis is accused of killing and dismembering his 2nd wife Mindi. Prosecutors say shortly before Mindi's death, Nicholas's first wife had just won a large divorce settlement. Nicholas and Mindi were allegedly on the run to avoid paying the $1.5 million. Mindi was killed in November 2022.

In April 2023, Nicholas married his third wife and was arrested a month later for Mindi's murder.

On his marriage license to this third wife, he listed his name as Nicholas Kilian James Stark, ESQ.

The defense maintains Kassotis was being controlled by someone named Jim McIntyre, who was controlling Kassotis and Mindi's finances. Prosecutors say this is a fake person. Weinstein says that while that might not be the person's name, he's a real person.

Kassotis is a former Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG) in the U.S. Navy. I reached out to Kassotis' attorney; his statement is in the next post.

Doug Weinstein, known for representing Yak Gotti in the YSL trial, is representing Nicholas Kassotis. I reached out to him after jury selection today, and here is his statement:

"After waiting in jail for over 700 days due to the interminable YSL trial, Mr. Kassotis eagerly awaits the opportunity to have his case heard. The tragedy that befell Mindi Kassotis and that rippled out to her friends, family, and community is horrific. Having pled not guilty to all charges, we have complete confidence in the selected jury and this Court to provide a fair trial. We are hopeful the trial will ultimately result in Nick walking free once the jury considers the limited circumstantial evidence that the State is expected to present.

Real or not, it was Kassotis who bought the hunting knife to dismember the body. DNA never lies.

And, iirc, he didn't report his wife missing either. Just moved out of state, assumed a different name, and married a different woman.

This has been an extremely weird case from the beginning. And I feel sure that the one on trial is the murderer and dismemberer.

MOO.

Even when Mindi was still alive, Nicholas was telling people she was dead. He told his future third wife that she died in childbirth, and others that she died of COVID.

Openings this morning:

Doug Weinstein starts with his opening statement. The state deferred to the defense and opted to give their opening second, which is rare.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=bor8T2kJwbg

Defense opening: Kassotis was a decorated JAG officer, "he's also a man that lived in fear..."
@DouglasWei43233 tells the jury about this man "Jim McIntyre"- "The truth, what really happened is far more complex. Mr. and Mrs. Kassotis were told they were targets...."

Defense is done with their opening. Doug Weinstein told the jury that his client didn't kill Mindi, and the state isn't going to be able to tell the jury a lot of things, including how Mindi was killed.

Prosecution opening statement by Laurie Balo. She began by telling the jury that hunters found the headless torso of Mindi.

"I submit to you that the killer was a prosecutor" (Kassotis is a former prosecutor.) Here is the knife found at the scene; it had a disinfectant wipe around the handle. There were wipes all over the place, per the prosecution's opening. They also show a still shot of #NichoalsKassotis in Home Depot with what they say is the knife.

The receipt shows 8:56am. Prosecutor said it was bought the morning of the same day the torso was found, later in the day. I believe she was insinuating he bought the knife, cut her up then dumped her.
