It seems pretty clear to me (JMO) that dear Nick didn't want to pay any money to his first wife. He didn't want to pay his dad back. So he hid and convinced his second wife (and her family) that someone was out to harm him. Good thing that "Jim" (FBI; no, not FBI) was looking out for their safety!!
I'm still not sure why Mindi had to die. But clearly Nick had that in his plans for a while as he had told multiple contacts that she had already died well before her actual death.
With Mindi dead, Nick had injected one more step of distance to hide from paying his debts.

TBF, I’m not sure why the prosecution even called her because she said the “false starts” (or deep lacerations) in the arm and leg bones were made with a power tool, and she couldn’t definitively say that any of the markings were made with the knife recovered from the crime scene. Maybe they had to call her or the defense would try to argue that investigators weren’t thorough or they’d claim the prosecution was hiding exculpatory evidence? It’s also totally possible that she provided useful testimony and it just went over my head.

I think the main point of her testimony was that there just wasn’t a whole lot to go on in terms of matching a weapon. I guess "Jim" isn't going to testify.
Nor anyone from his super-duper-secret job with Microsoft.
Something that I noticed from NK's police interviews was that he changed his story from what he likely told his friends and in-laws, since some of those lies could be easily disproved. One was that he likely told others that the security detail was provided by the FBI. While to investigators he said that Mindi was told that Jim was from the FBI, but that Nick later found out that he likely wasn't. Second, to some he said he was working on super-secret cyberthreat software project for Microsoft. But to LE he said that he was working on a project through contacts organized by Jim....not that he was employed by Microsoft.

I presume that the various acquaintances of Mindi's were on the stand today to show that Nick told them various "reasons" as to how Mindi died. He told one person it was due to a massive stroke, which was in her family's genetic history. He told another that she died from a sceptic infection.
Aside from that, I'm very glad to hear from these witnesses, especially Mindi's best friend and her former employer. I've really felt that we haven't had an opportunity to get any kind of feel for what Mindi was like as a person. Even after her parents' testimony, she still was a cypher to me.
I think it's important for the jury to hear that Mindi was a living, breathing person with friendships and people who loved her.
i listened again last night and clearly heard that part about nick taking money from dad. i'm glad you posted about it. as, again, that bit of info actually gave some insight as to why dad and uncle could be looking for nick.... as i never understood why nick pointed his finger at dad and uncle as culprits.

So it was his first wife Heather that contacted GBI to say that the sketch resembled Mindi because of the jaw line.
Nick WAS supposed to pay her 1.5 million from the divorce settlement and Nick claimed he had 32 million, falsifying bank statements. She never knew him to have that kind of money.

My notes from the first part of today’s testimony.
CHRIS CZAPLAK - FORMER COLLEAGUE AND FRIEND OF NK
Czaplak is currently an attorney in San Diego and works for a private firm but is a former JAG officer. He met NK in 2009 when he was stationed in Norfolk, VA. They were colleagues and friends. He was later stationed in Italy between 2011-2013 and NK was also stationed elsewhere in Italy at the same time.
He lost contact with NK some time around 2018 or 2019, and they didn’t speak for several years. A Christmas card that he and his wife sent NK was returned undelivered, NK’s email address no longer worked, and his phone was also out of service.
NK finally reached out to Czaplak in July 2022 from a new email address, and the two followed up with each other over the phone after NK provided a new phone number.
INFO NK RELAYED TO CZAPLAK DURING THE JULY 2022 PHONE CONVERSATION
- NK and Mindi were changing their names because NK learned his biological parents weren’t his real parents
- the people NK thought were his parents were filing complaints against him with the Bar and opening new credit accounts in his name
- Mindi was pregnant and they were having a girl
- NK was working as general counsel for a cybersecurity startup that had access to the dark web and he was advising the company on legal issues
- NK had written a number of short stories that garnered the attention of someone in Hollywood and one of the stories might be optioned for a screenplay
Czaplak didn’t hear from NK again until March 2023.
In March, NK told Czaplak that Mindi and their unborn baby had died due to Mindi’s high blood pressure and heart issues.
Several weeks later, a mutual friend forwarded Czaplak an article about Mindi’s remains being found and identified. He contacted the tip line listed in the article and shared the information NK had shared during their previous conversations.
ANGELA WYNN - MINDI’S BEST FRIEND
She met Mindi in 2006 when they worked together at a law firm and last spoke to her in October 2022. They spoke everyday.
She first met NK shortly after he began dating Mindi.
Mindi told Angela that NK had been taken away from his biological parents (who were diplomats) as a child.
Mindi told Angela she was pregnant but didn’t indicate that she knew the sex or her due date.
NK called Angela and told her that Mindi was gone. He said he didn’t know what happened and wished he could have protected her more. He said they would perform tests over the weekend, and he’d let her know as soon as he heard something. NK called her back the following Monday and said Mindi had died from a stroke and said it was hereditary on her father’s side.
JOE WEST - MINDI’S FORMER BOSS
West is testifying virtually due to an aneurysm in his aorta that prevented him from traveling or leaving the care of his cardiologist. He’s currently an attorney at the Gibson & Dunn Law Firm – which practices mostly corporate law. Mindi worked as his legal assistant at their DC office from 2007/2008 until 2016.
NK sent him an email on December 19, 2022 asking for him to call him.
During the phone call, NK advised that Mindi had recently been admitted into the hospital, went into septic shock following a very bad infection, and had died.
CAMERON NELSON - FORMER FRIEND & COLLEAGUE OF NK
She currently lives in Williamsburg, VA and is an attorney for the Defense Health Agency (which administers military health services). She served in the Navy for the JAG office and worked as an attorney, ultimately earning Commander status.
She met NK at the Naval Justice school while he was attending a basic legal course.
In February 2009, she was diagnosed with cancer and NK volunteered to take her scheduled five-month deployment on the USNF Comfort so that she could focus on her treatment.
She was stationed at the Pentagon between 2011-2014 and again between 2015-2016.
She met NK’s first wife Heather through NK and attended their wedding. After she learned they were getting a divorce, NK expressed significant distress about Heather’s infidelity. He also shared that Heather was unable to become pregnant, and he was desperate to become a father.
She also met Mindi through NK, and the two developed a close friendship.
NK was discharged from the Navy in approximately 2017. He shared that he was interested in practicing cyber law and information technology law.
NK told her that during his job search, he attended an event called Jobs for JAGs and met a man named Peter who worked for Microsoft.
She often communicated with NK via Signal. NK generally set his messages to disappear, although not always, and she wasn’t in the habit of setting her messages to disappear. (She was, therefore, able to forward screenshots of some of their messaging to the GBI later.)
NK told her there was an issue with his USAA banking account (he’d either been hacked or an employee or employees had accessed his account) and he’d also had issues with his mail.
NK also claimed his first wife had attempted to break into his house. He said he reported the threats from Heather and the break-in attempt to the Alexandria Police Department and said he’d reported the issues with his banking account and mail to the FBI.
NK told her he didn’t have access to the money in his USAA account and was struggling to pay their bills.
Prior to May of 2018, she and her husband had provided NK with minimal financial assistance. In May 2018, NK asked to borrow $2,000 in cash (which she provided). She and her husband continued to provide him with assistance after that – housing, food, medical expenses, vet bills and food for their dog, etc.
Leading up to NK and Mindi’s planned move from Alexandria in November 2019, she and her husband opted to provide NK with assistance via a credit card that could easily track what was being spent. In total, NK charged $198,000 to the credit card.
On two occasions, NK claimed to have made attempts to pay her back via wire transfer and a cashier’s check, but the money never materialized. He’s never repaid a penny of his debt to her, and she and her husband determined it was no longer sustainable to lend him money in January 2021.
She last saw NK in November 2019, when he and Mindi were preparing to leave Alexandria.
At some point after their move, NK told her that his parents were not his biological parents and they were changing their last name to Stark. She understood that Stark was the last name of his real biological parents. NK also changed his birthday to February 14 (which he claimed was his real birthdate).
NK mentioned that he’d developed an interest in writing short horror stories and said he’d had some success publishing on online forums. NK said a story titled “I Think My Mother-in-Law is Trying to Kill Me” had been optioned for a movie.

She met NK on eHarmony and they married very quickly after they met.
NK was deployed to Italy between 2011-2013, and they acquired a dog while stationed there.
They both wanted children, but she has polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which makes it difficult. She was able to get pregnant during their marriage, but she lost the baby.
NK accused her of infidelity during their separation, but she says she never cheated on him while they were married.
Their divorce was granted in October 2015. NK represented himself because he was an attorney and said he could take care of it. She trusted that he would. The grounds for divorce were irreconcilable differences.
As part of the divorce, NK agreed to pay off a personal loan or refinance it in his own name, pay off or refinance the truck he was driving, and refinance or sell their marital home.
He married Mindi about a year after his divorce.
NK did not cooperate with the terms of the divorce – which put her job in jeopardy because she’s required to maintain a security clearance (which includes maintaining good credit). Her job required that she pursue the divorce settlement to the fullest extent of the law because her employment was at stake.
NK was required to pay her $1.5 million, plus $90,000 in interest and $10,000 in attorney fees. On December 28, 2018, the court found NK to be non-compliant with the consent order and the judge ordered him to appear before the court in January 2019 to show cause why he should not be held in contempt.
In the hearing in January 2019, NK testified under oath that he had more than enough money to pay the settlement but refused to pay it. Under oath, he said he had $32 million. (On cross, Heather reveals that NK provided the court with false bank statements confirming this.)
NK told the judge that Mindi was holding his funds, and he thought she had a claim to the money because he earned it during his marriage to her. He claimed to be pursuing other actions with Mindi to access the money.
The judge told NK that he wanted to see movement of the money within a week or warned him that his liberty was at stake for refusing to comply with the settlement.
A similar hearing was held in the courtroom prior to their hearing that ended with the man owing money being led out in handcuffs. After seeing this, NK asked to meet with Heather’s attorney in the mediation room and agreed to the additional interest payment and attorney fees.
NK never complied with the court order, and a bench warrant was ultimately issued for Failure to Appear on December 23, 2020.

NK accused her of infidelity during their separation, but she says she never cheated on him while they were married.
Their divorce was granted in October 2015. NK represented himself because he was an attorney and said he could take care of it. She trusted that he would. The grounds for divorce were irreconcilable differences.
As part of the divorce, NK agreed to pay off a personal loan or refinance it in his own name, pay off or refinance the truck he was driving, and refinance or sell their marital home.
He married Mindi about a year after his divorce.
NK did not cooperate with the terms of the divorce – which put her job in jeopardy because she’s required to maintain a security clearance (which includes maintaining good credit). Her job required that she pursue the divorce settlement to the fullest extent of the law because her employment was at stake.
NK was required to pay her $1.5 million, plus $90,000 in interest and $10,000 in attorney fees. On December 28, 2018, the court found NK to be non-compliant with the consent order and the judge ordered him to appear before the court in January 2019 to show cause why he should not be held in contempt.
In the hearing in January 2019, NK testified under oath that he had more than enough money to pay the settlement but refused to pay it. Under oath, he said he had $32 million. (On cross, Heather reveals that NK provided the court with false bank statements confirming this.)
NK told the judge that Mindi was holding his funds, and he thought she had a claim to the money because he earned it during his marriage to her. He claimed to be pursuing other actions with Mindi to access the money.
The judge told NK that he wanted to see movement of the money within a week or warned him that his liberty was at stake for refusing to comply with the settlement.
A similar hearing was held in the courtroom prior to their hearing that ended with the man owing money being led out in handcuffs. After seeing this, NK asked to meet with Heather’s attorney in the mediation room and agreed to the additional interest payment and attorney fees.
NK never complied with the court order, and a bench warrant was ultimately issued for Failure to Appear on December 23, 2020.
I'm listening to the testimony now. So, Heather first got an anonymous text asking her if she was once married to Nick Kassotis. Then she was told to look at this sketch of a Jane Doe. Who was the anonymous texter? Obviously someone who knew who Mindi was, but why not contact GBI themselves rather than go through Heather? They also could have tipped the police anonymously.
The $32 million claim is also bizarre. I've heard of plenty of people who hide their assets during a divorce, but I've never heard of someone falsely claiming money they didn't have. It's a giant self-own. And this false claim seems to have snowballed, leading to Nick going on the run, and eventually leading to Mindi's murder.
Really bizarre, as at the same time he was claiming all this money he was bleeding money from his old friend Cameron Nelson and whoever else.

Prior to May of 2018, she and her husband had provided NK with minimal financial assistance. In May 2018, NK asked to borrow $2,000 in cash (which she provided). She and her husband continued to provide him with assistance after that – housing, food, medical expenses, vet bills and food for their dog, etc.
Leading up to NK and Mindi’s planned move from Alexandria in November 2019, she and her husband opted to provide NK with assistance via a credit card that could easily track what was being spent. In total, NK charged $198,000 to the credit card.
