For reasons unknown, authorities said a group of six to eight teenage boys approached the children, and one of the males picked up a large rock and threw it at them, police said.

The 5-year-old girl received staples at an area hospital; the 13-year-old boy was also taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Police said the same group of teens later encountered two other boys and assaulted them as well.
