GA School System Going Entirely To Single-Sex Public Schools

  • #41
When I read the title of this thread, I knew it was GA for Georgia, but I wondered is that the state in the US or some "other school" in another country except the US.

I have a novel idea. If the test scores are because of a barrier, like money, then ensure more financial resources are in play to tutor the students who are not performing at an acceptable level. What about the home situation?. Is the neglect and abuse. Are the families dysfunctional.

Boys and girls "need the social" skills to "interact". If this school is concerned about the high number of teen pregnancies. Then OMG, teach boys and girls about sex education and prevention.

Just don't hide in the sand. Don't do the "just say No" because we all know that is not the answer.

Will there be dances where boys and girls could interact and get to know how to get along with members of the opposite sex.

There is an idea that is "floating" around in my City. It is school for black students only. No whites allowed. Reverse segregation. In my opinion a step backwards. But the blacks are dropping out of school to join gangs, and sell drugs because of the easy money. They are often "suspended from school" due to behavior and actions.

The government is all for "inclusion" of all members of society in every aspect of society and has told the school board that in no way shape or form will the school board get any money for this idea.

if you treat boys and girls as different and less valuable, in the separation of education and sex, you will get boys and girls who will "feel" and act as separate and "less inclusive" in society and the boys "may feel" superior to women and we all know where that leads.

A man killed 14 women in Montreal because "he felt" that they were in an Engineering School and that the women were taking away educational and jobs opportunities from men. That women were "inferior" to men. That is what this type of behavior can lead to.............

I am thinking that I would love for my 16 year old daughter not to be in a building all day filled with hormonal teenage boys!! lol
I don't agree that seperate schools is treating boys and girls differently.
I don't think that it will lead to someone becoming a serial killer, either.... lol

Lisa, it may sound good on paper, but in this case it doesn't give the parents a choice. Also, this is an extraordinarily poor district that can't afford the schools that they have but they managed to go into debt to create basically an wealthy all-white academy school that will be exempt from separating boys and girls. The academy is public, not private. If they can't provide books, desks, toilet paper and test results with boys and girls together, why do they think separating will magically fix the situation. Just don't seem right.

angelmom, i agree with you. when i was in school i was more preoccupied with what the boys thought of me than my school work (even though i was a good student...). mostly because i got tired of the comments reguarding the way my shirts were or the way my jeans fit. i think this is a great idea. if people are worried their kids can't see their friends, but them in coed sports after school or let them see them at each others houses with a chaperone!

It's not a radical, experimental idea. Private schools do it every year.

How will they deal with Gay students? just curious

I am familiar with this area, and the wealth disparity between the Lake Oconee community and the surrounding county is rather startling. President Bush visits to play golf at Lake Oconee; it is an extremely affluent development. On the other hand, the local community is appallingly dirt poor. I think that separating students by sex, race, wealth, or any other criteria will create schools which, as Orwell famously wrote in Animal Farm, "some are more equal than others." In my opinion, when kids grow up together, they learn how to get along, provided the adults teach equality and respect.

Excellent post!
I have a God-son in this county, and yes, even though I do all I can do for him, he and his immediate family are extremely poor.
And I have thought about this ALOT since I first posted it..
My daughter (the tomboy) had the BIGGEST impact on my opinion...she has so many boy friends (seperate there!) that if given a choice I could not bear to tear her away from them...
She's a tomboy...nothing I can do about it (if I chose to, which I don't), and I am just glad she HAS friends, be either they female OR male....which, she has BOTH, but still she seems to like the guys MORE than the girls (she is 11) but regardless, I WANT MY BABY TO HAVE FRIENDS!!!!!!!!
Guys or girls, it doesn' matter, I WANT HER TO HAVE FRIENS NO MATTER WHAT SEX THEY ARE!

There is evidence to support an increase in girls' academic success in single-sex schools. The same studies showed that boys didn't do any better or any worse in a same-sex school.

I don't know of any current research -- I wrote a paper on it in college about 10 years ago, so that's what I'm remembering.

I'm all for it; there are too many students who go to school simply because they want to hook up with members of the opposite sex. Teen pregnancy, at least in my area (SC) is crazy out of control.

That being said, as a teacher I'd much rather teach all boys than all girls. I have more problems with girls' attitudes and sneakiness than I ever do with boys.

LOL, girls are all drama. I would have much preferred my daughter playing golf on the boys team rather than the girls. Unfortunately, for her, it wasn't an option. But, besides the drama, she would have benefited from the stronger competition and developed into a better player if she had been allowed to compete with the boys. She's a strong enough player that she would have been the #1 player even on the boys team.

And, although she didn't face that issue academically, I would venture to guess that if she wasn't in classes with the brightest minds (regardless of sex) she would have suffered academically.

Ga. County Drops Single-Sex School Plan

By DORIE TURNER

ATLANTA (AP) — A rural Georgia county plans to dump its plan to segregate all its schools by gender after a groundswell of opposition from parents who were outraged that they weren't consulted ahead of time, a school board member said Wednesday.

Greene County school officials will formally drop the plan at an April 14 meeting in favor of asking parents, teachers and staff members for their input, said the board member, Velicia Cobb.

The four-school county may decide to move forward with some single-sex schools as part of future plans, Cobb said.

I have to say I'm glad. At first I was torn between liking/not liking the idea.
But my oldest (11) is a pure tomboy....And her best friends are boys. I would hate for her to be deprived of those friendships.
