Hi Monique,

Thank you for letting us know. I will be sure to watch the show. It's one of my favorites. I hope that your life is a little better now that Shannon has some justice. Love to you and your family.

The man deserves some credit for giving in to his conscience. Most dirtbag criminals walk around without a care in the world.

I am glad he confessed but I don't really think he deserves any "credit" for anything. I am sure the reason he did was to clear his own guilty conscience which I am suprised he actually has.

Seriously? He took his neice to see The Mighty Ducks while Shannon was tied up at his home!

He only confessed after all of his appeals were exhausted and nothing could help him anymore. His only hope is the parole board now. Why wouldn't he express remorse?

He gets NO credit in my book. He is exactly where he deserves to be.

Exactly. I see his confession as just door #2, in his head, to get out of prison. As you said he maintained his innocence... until all of his appeals were exhausted. Now his only chance at freedom is the parole board. It may be a long shot but it is the only chance he has. What do they like to hear? NOT that you are innocent and they should let you go. Nope, they like to hear that you feel remorseful and are rehabilitated to go out into society. I am glad that he confessed but I am not so sure that he is being truthful in it or that she was his only victim. IMO his “confession” is more about him knowing he still has one lone chance to get out of prison and trying to work it.

The link above isn't working for me, here's the same article Shannon Melendi's death still stings, 20 years later

This was a sad thread to read through but I'm happy that the conclusion reached found Hinton guilty and I hope he never gets released. He was first denied parole back in April of 2012 and I'm not sure when his next parole hearing is.

The Charley Project says that investigators were renewing the search for Shannon's body despite Hinton's claims of burning her body and then discarding the ashes. I hope they are still searching.

Decades after rape and murder, a family fights to keep confessed killer behind bars

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/crime/article206906209.html

Shannon Melendi, a 19-year-old Emory University student from Miami, had just finished scorekeeping a Saturday afternoon softball game in Atlanta when she was abducted, raped and killed by a man who wouldn’t admit his guilt for another 12 years.

Now, with Monday marking the 24th anniversary of her death, Melendi’s family has begun a petition drive to keep her killer behind bars. Colvin “Butch” Hinton III, 57, was convicted of Melendi’s murder in 2006. He remains the only person in Georgia history to be convicted of the charge without a body or a crime scene.

Though he received a life sentence, under Georgia law Hinton is eligible for parole every seven years. In 2011 the state parole board declined to even grant him a hearing. He has yet to be granted one in 2018, but he’s up for parole once again.

Hi everyone. It's been several years since I've logged in. This is Shannon's sister, Monique. I am no longer able to access the email address I had under user name Angel's Lil Sis. If anyone is still following this, our fight is long from being over. Hinton was sentenced to life with the eligibility of parole every 7 years. The parole board is going to pull his file any day now to see if they'll consider him for a hearing. I created an Online petition to keep him behind bars about a year ago in anticipation of this. Our family is asking for your help in our fight. Below is the link to the Online petition. Every single signature goes in his file and they will see it when they pull it this month. Please sign and share far and wide.

Sign the Petition

Love and hugs,

Monique

I wonder if they ever talked to the wife? She was “supposedly” complicit since she knew about his victims and did nothing…
Also, should someone explain to me how a convicted kidnapper and rapist is allowed to be an umpire at a softball club where young women work?...Colvin Hinton is guilty.. he already burned her down, there was nothing left of her but I’m glad he never got out of jail… that Hinton is a piece of trash…
Whatever
Rest in peace beautiful
