GA - Twin brothers miss flight to Boston, found dead 24 hours later in Georgia mountains, 14 Mar 2025

BBM. IMO, it depends upon how "clean" your police force is. Judging from what I've read about this region and its past, I don't know enough about this particular police force to assume they're qualified to determine the way these deaths occurred.

In this area all homicides/suicides and most other major cases are turned over to the GBI. We are small towns and have small town police forces and sheriffs offices

Towns County Schools was made aware that a crime scene photo had been shared with some of our students on Monday. In collaboration with local law enforcement, our administration promptly initiated an investigation and took appropriate measures to ensure the photo was no longer in the possession of any students. The students involved were unaware of the illegal nature of how the photo was distributed and were fully cooperative with the administration during the investigation. Due to FERPA regulations, we are unable to comment on specific student discipline matters.

The 11Alive article also provides some information that I don't believe has been mentioned before.

Excerpts below (bbm):

"The family said the twins just got their licenses last year and shared a vehicle."

"The family said the twins had been at their sister's house in Chamblee the night before, on March 6, watching movies before heading back to their home in Lawrenceville, where they lived with their stepmom and father."

"The family said the car was found parked at Bell Mountain on the morning of Saturday, March 8."

"Family said the twins' phones, wallet and plane ticket were found inside their car. They said the twins' stepmom mentioned bags were found in the car but didn't elaborate on what was inside the bags."

Interesting (imo) that the brothers wallets / phones were left inside the car and not their persons.

"The gate (to Bell Mountain) is open from approximately 8 a.m. until end of daylight...when closed, the gate prevents any vehicle's from entering the parking lot."
This would imply (imo) the brothers couldn't have arrived/parked at the mountain until after 8am when the gate was open.

I feel like this volunteer firefighter is guilty of being a bad person and trying to get attention by circulating the photos. he is just an ignoramus and nothing more nefarious...or....did he just come upon them on accident? how did he become the person on scene and who instructed him to go there?

He looks very angry in the arrest photos..mOO

I can’t even begin to try to comprehend the hurt and rage …. To lose family under questionable circumstances is one thing but to learn later that they were degraded in death…

I do believe this was suicide. Why would you leave home during the night to go to a place you had never been when you had a plane to catch at 7am.

The car was at the location. Police would not have released a statement suggesting murder-suicide if the car showed any evidence of foul play.

My personal theory, I don't think they were going to meet friends and I don't think the friend in Boston were ever notified they were coming. I think they bought the tickets with this exact plan in mind, to give them time to decompose without anyone being worried. I believe they were hoping they wouldn't be found for a while and once they were found, the cause of death would be indeterminate.
But they were found on/near a trail - they didn't try to hide themselves from hikers.

Not what I was thinking at all. Figured he might have friends interested in seeing photos. MOO
This quote reads like a single photo was shared with some students -- I wonder if perhaps the FF's child was responsible for distributing a photo. JMO

This is close to where I live. Right across the border from my NC town. Most volunteer firefighters here are also first responders. When a call goes out from dispatch after a call has been made to the Sheriffs office they, 99 times out of 100, also dispatch the first responders from the fire department that is over the area in question. I had a good friend who was the assistant chief of a local volunteer fire department. 98% of all calls he went on were medical in nature and/or car wrecks. Very rarely is there a fire. In fact in all the time I knew him until he passed I believe his department only had 2 or 3 fires over a period of many years. The volunteer fire departments here are expected to do way more than just fires. They also are dispatched for stuff like traffic control during wrecks, help elderly who have fallen, and basically try to get to the event and keep things under control until EMTs and/or police arrive. Since these are very rural areas each community has its own volunteer fire department and they can reach a call faster than LE and EMTs because they are close to the call.

This guy who took the pictures knew better. Even though pretty much all of our fire departments here are volunteer departments they are still trained. It’s nothing like the firefighting schools of say the NYFD but they do have basic training. This guy probably thought he could make a quick buck…or go viral…who knows. LE need to see how many other cases he has worked on and see if he had pictures from them as well. He’s in a world of trouble.

So if any are wondering why a firefighter was at the scene this is why.

Kerling was part of the emergency response team at the location on the top of Bell Mountain on March 8, according to local CBS affiliate WANF.

WXIA confirmed with the Towns County Jail that Kerlin bonded out. He was charged with misdemeanor obstruction. The charge is not related to the investigation into the death of the Lewis twins.

We know from other reports that Town County terminated Kerling from his volunteer position for violating protocol. Kerling personally took the photo while on location during a call-out and no doubt has some apologies to make...

Great explanation. My dad was FDNY but I have friends living in smaller towns who say the firefighters fulfill so many roles, often including EMT services, because there are usually more health- and accident-related needs than fire needs. Honestly my heart sank when I heard it was a FF (or any first responder) who took and distributed photos.

Did I miss his apology?

Can someone explain how taking pictures of a crime is an obstruction of justice? Not condoning it, just don't follow the logic.
IANAL, but I would imagine that disclosure of evidence in a potential crime that is intended at that time to be held closely by LE can inform both those involved in the crime as well as others who might falsely claim to have been involved. So, LE loses the use of the details of that evidence as a tool to discern potential involvement or culpability when they are interviewing witnesses, potential persons of interest, and suspects.

I wonder if the FF showed it to his kid to see if they knew who the deceased were? Maybe asked if they went to school together. Then, a snowball reaction? Just a thought
This is why I was pondering upthread about the context in which the firefighter shared the photo...I think that's really important. There have been cases where victims are mocked by first responders, but there are also more legitimate reasons to share a photo (although still breaking protocol) -- really curious what the context and accompanying text was.
